I bought five Wyze Cam v4 units specifically because RTSP support was advertised and working. That functionality was the entire reason I chose these cameras over other options. Everything was working exactly as expected until the recent firmware update removed RTSP support.
Now I’m left with five cameras that no longer work for the purpose I bought them for. I run a setup that relies on RTSP to integrate with my existing system, so without it the cameras are essentially useless to me.
What’s most frustrating is the lack of any clear communication about when this will actually be fixed. The only response we seem to get is a vague “soon”, but there’s been no timeline, no progress updates, and no real transparency about what’s happening. When you’ve spent money on multiple devices based on a specific feature, that kind of uncertainty is incredibly frustrating.
If RTSP was temporarily removed for technical reasons, that’s understandable. Firmware issues happen. But customers deserve honest updates and a realistic timeline. Right now it just feels like we’re being left in the dark.
At the moment I have five cameras sitting here that I can’t properly use, and that’s not a great place to be as a customer who specifically chose Wyze because of that functionality.
Can someone from the Wyze team please give a proper update on the status of RTSP support for the v4? Even a rough timeframe would be better than the ongoing “soon”.
We have never advertised RTSP support for Wyze Cam v4. We therefore did not remove RTSP support from the camera on the last update.
We did not break it, because it never existed. We are working on RTSP support for Wyze Cam v4, but I do not have a timeline for it quite yet.
I am from the Wyze Team, and just to reiterate the Wyze Cam v4 has never had RTSP support, but we are working on it, and I do not have a timeline currently.
If you need RTSP on a V4 cam, you have a few third party options (none are through Wyze or were ever advertised by Wyze):
Run the cameras through the Tiny Cam Pro (on a dedicated old Android phone or android emulator on a computer) in “Server Mode” and it will convert nearly any Wyze camera stream to RTSP.
Various 3rd party hack Wyze bridge docker forks depending on the camera model and SDK/authentication protocol of that model. For a V4 cam, you may need to go back to an earlier firmware version for it to work on some of those. This has not been a reliable way of doing it, but some people have had success.
Last option is to wait for Wyze to release their own official RTSP support. They’ve been talking about since the end of last year. They have released RTSP support in beta testing for 2 camera models already and said V4 is actively being worked on and could be next, but this is an additional thing they started doing and was never promised to anyone at sale, at least not by Wyze. If a friend or 3rd party social media influencer promised otherwise, that would be on that person. I’m glad Wyze is finally working on RTSP though! I’ve been using the Beta release on V3 cams and it’s working great for me, so I’m really excited for it to [hopefully] finally happen with the V4s and V3Pros [soon].
Only β? Cam v3 and Cam Pan v3 firmware with RTSP was released to production last month (though that was subsequently paused, so I don’t know its actual status at this point), and I would expect the latest beta firmware for those Cams to continue to support RTSP, though I have no Cam v3s and only that last production release (with RTSP) on a Cam Pan v3.
As others have said, the v4 has never had RTSP. Can you clarify?
If you were using it with Tiny Cam or possibly Docker Wyze Bridge (neither of which uses RTSP to the cam, but they can convert the cam feed to RTSP for you) or something like that, then you may need to downgrade the firmware, the most recent has new authentication that is not compatible with many 3rd party apps.
For Tiny Cam, I believe they have released an update to support the latest v4 firmware. Have you updated Tiny Cam (if that’s what you’re using).
For others, you’ll need to follow the instructions to manually downgrade to a previous firmware, and turn off auto updates until those developers add support for it.
There are several other threads about this - below is one of them for reference but you can find others in the search. The end result is basically the same (what I’ve said above)
Ah, I missed that announcement, thanks. I wasn’t aware it graduated to production. That’s good to know as it means it’s available to everyone now and easier to access.
I’m really looking forward to getting it in the v4 and V3Pro now. Once that happens I’m going to redo a ton of my lighting automations to not just decide things based on motion sensors but also check if a person was identified in the last x minutes before turning off a light. My poor 3yo sometimes has the kitchen/dining-roon lights turn off on her when she’s alone at the table sitting still against the wall. So I’ll add an extra condition not to do that if she’s been detected in the last 10 minutes. It will also help to better automate lighting with pets around, or possibly setup zone specific detections for things like my pool, or connecting my openclaw to analyze my streams.
I’ve been playing with it (starting with the initial flash-only firmware but continuing into this last production release) off and on with a Cam Pan v3 and have been able to view the stream with VLC, FFplay, OBS Studio, and ZoneMinder just to confirm that it’s working with those platforms (because they’re things I’ve seen other users mention or ask about), but I don’t have a third-party environment that I use to regularly consume feeds, so I don’t really have a use case for it. It’s cool that it’s working on those Cams, though, and I’m looking forward to seeing the availability expand.
Also, like I mentioned, I don’t know what the status is on that latest production firmware release with those Cams because of the problems it was reportedly causing for some users and the subsequent release halt, but new public β firmware has been released since then, and I imagine it still has RTSP for those two models, but I haven’t tried it on Cam Pan v3.
…yeeaaahhh… umm … What did you think the “ze” supposedly stands for in “WyZE”… Zero Explanation. In fact, the whole name is possibly an acronym for “What You get is Zero Explanation”.
I have the same problem, and have talked to 3 different Ais about it to no avail. I understand from Ai that it does no good to go back to older firmware because it won’t hold.
This would appear to be another example of AI giving incorrect answers. For your Cam v4, navigate to Settings ➜ Device Info ➜ Firmware Version ➜ Automatic Update ➜ Automatic Update (toggle it off if it’s on). Ideally, you’d do this prior to flashing older firmware and then go back to confirm that this setting is still off after flashing and rebooting the Cam.
So when you add it do you add anything special other than the iCloud and select the right camera ? I tried honestly I spent hours trying to figure it out tried switching between iCloud and RT and nothing
Make sure it has protocol cloud
You are linked to Wyze
Since it’s still not working for you this is the key thing in most cases like this:
Go to advanced settings and change the channel number.
The channel number is a complicated thing. Early on when tiny cam was first created, the way you got different cameras was by choosing the correct channel number of that camera.
The channel number was decided based on what position the device was listed in the Wyze app V2.
Wyze made it impossible to change the channel number when they launched app V3+. Now the channel number is loosely decided based on what order you activated the cameras chronologically. But there are exceptions. Also, non-cameras use up a channel number too (like a smart plug), So if you choose a non-camera channel number there, then things won’t connect right and you need to change it to a different channel number. There’s a lot more complication related to channel number, but this is a very short summary of things you need to know.
TL;DR try changing the channel number
That should help. Just to be safe, maybe try a different channel number than your other camera is set to in it’s settings.
Then go back out of advanced settings and change the camera UID field to see if you can get it to work.
I hope that helps. That’s what I think is happening to you, though it’s possible there are other things. All I can tell you for sure is that it does work with V4 cameras because it’s working for me on all is mine.
I should clarify, that that is about the static fixed view V4 cameras. I have heard that there is currently an issue going on with the pan V4 cameras for some people. That’s something that’s in the process of getting fixed as I understand it.
I’m also unclear which version of tinyCam Monitor @frogpeople is using, because “17.3.0 Beta 2” is displayed in one of the images above, but my understanding is that the latest release is 18.0.3, and I believe that’s what’s supposed to be compatible with the newer Cam v4 firmware. Maybe it’s important to pin that down?
I’m just speculating. My use of tinyCam Monitor is limited to trying it once on an emulator a few years ago.
