Wyze Video Doorbell v2 - Released 10/24/2023

Mine is white, not blue and it has a message that says “Camera feed is not available.”

Hi,

I just set up by V2 Doorbell and trying to get the camera on Alexa Echo Show. However, even after completing all the steps you listed above, the “Press” action on the Doorbell is not triggering my Echo Show. I made sure the Wyze account is linked to my Amazon Alexa app.

Any insights/thoughts?

Thanks,

Tim, you need to set up routines in Alexa to show the doorbell video. You also need to set up a second routine to stop the video or the vdb stream will continue to display on the echo show.
Post if you need assistance setting up the routines.

Thank you, I followed the steps of Silente as shown below and still cannot view the Doorbell V2 on my Echo show. The issue is I am not even able to do a “Live View” of the Doorbell on my Alexa App. The doorbell shows there in the list of cameras, however, it says “Live View unavailable in Alexa App”. I have many other cameras - V2 and V3 and they all show up on my Alexa App as well as Echo Show.

Once I figure out how to show the Doorbell, I will add a routine to stop it.

Amazon echo show:

  • Make sure Wyze is linked to your Amazon Alexa in app.
  • Tap the plus button (top right)
  • Create a “routine”
  • Select “add event” under “when”
  • Select “smart home”
  • Select your doorbell
  • Select doorbell event and select “when pressed”
  • Go back to the routine you are making
  • Select “Alexa will”
  • Select “custom”
  • Then type “show me the doorbell” (or whatever name you gave you doorbell)
  • Save and you’re done
(You can also add other options if you want the doorbell button to trigger more: like a voice announcement)

I have successfully uninstalled front and rear vdb.v1’s, reconnected wiring for mechanical chimes, installed front and rear vdb.v2’s and everything is working without issue. Excellent video quality both live and playback. The only glitches were associated with Alexa app integration and severely delayed responses. Not just seconds, but literally minutes, 20 plus at times. Because I experienced unusual delays with other camera responses, it probably was Alexa/Amazon related. As of now, everything is back to normal and actually improved.

My issues now come from the hit and miss livestreaming in the Alexa app. Some days it works for some cameras and other days it doesn’t work for any cameras. Not a big deal since I prefer streaming from the Wyze app.

Hi Earl.Automation,

Just to confirm. Did you need CamPlus to enable the Doorbell “Press” trigger to show the camera on your Echo Show? I was under the impression that CamPlus is not needed for this purposes(based on posts here) and tried several times following Silente’s steps here without much success.

However, I now tried activating CamPlus and only that allowed me to successfully trigger this.

Am I missing something here?

I am having serious issues with livestreaming in the alexa app. The message I get is " live view is not recorded in the Alexa app", but I am getting the display on my echo show 8 2nd gen. I don’t rely on the alexa app for livestreaming and prefer the Wyze app.

Are your notifications set up in Wyze and do you have the doorbell press notification option available in the alexa app? Are you on cam plus or cam plus lite?

The routine setup looks okay. If you have either cam plus, a routine for person can double up with doorbell press. It was almost 24 hrs after install that Alexa picked up the feed from Wyze. I actually had to sign out of Wyze and log back in before the doorbells worked properly with Alexa.

Good observation. I have cam plus and just thought of this as normal. Seems it might be cam plus or cam plus lite or both related.

Looks like Brenda updated her knowledge base post to clarify that Google Home speaker chime/notifications are not possible:

But I question the "* Google Home doesn’t support 3rd-party doorbell ring notifications. " statement. I’m no expert in Google’s requirements, but Google’s pages on visitor notifications seem to imply that they support 3rd party doorbells, but that not all 3rd party doorbells work with Google.

Google Nest or Home speakers and displays can announce when someone rings your Google Nest doorbell, or other compatible doorbell. With a smart display, Chromecast or Android TV, you may also be able to see who’s there.

Note: Visitor announcements may not be available on all 3rd party doorbells that work with Google. To find out if they’re available on your doorbell, check with your doorbell manufacturer.

This makes it sound like it’s up to Wyze to ensure their doorbell is compatible with Google’s ecosystem… however I’m not sure what the requirements or certification process is like there. Or if Wyze cares to be supported for that matter.

From everything I know, you are correct. I have seen proof that Google does indeed support 3rd party doorbell presses to chime on Google speakers. Someone showed it to me in the Wyze Discord Server that another VDB they had supported it in Google Home. It turns out there are several 3rd party companies that support Google Chiming from a Doorbell press. It is not accurate for Wyze to say:

“Google Home doesn’t support 3rd-party doorbell ring notifications.”

Because that implies it is Google’s fault and that Google doesn’t allow it, which isn’t true. Google supports it. Each company gets to choose to implement that support or not, and some do support it. This means it must be Wyze that has chosen not to add that ability. What that FAQ should say, is:

“Wyze has not added doorbell ring/chimes/notifications through Google Home at this time.”

That would be accurate.

Besides the fact that some competitors support having Google chime when the doorbell is pressed, here is Google’s documentation proving they support it: Google DoorbellPressEvent

I also told Wyze about this in the latest AMA event that Google added doorbell presses to their support now. I mentioned it in more than one question, but they did not answer any of those questions…probably because I overwhelmed them with over 30 other questions.

If Wyze would add Doorbell button press support, we could absolutely have Google Speakers chime, or broadcast voice announcements.

Finally got my Doorbell v2 installed today and it works great. Better picture and field of view than my old one, and it ties into the same ecosystem of my other cameras. Waited on this one over the v1 or pro because of the ringing of the existing chime.

I still find it annoying that it requires a separate ‘controller’ in the chime because there isn’t a lot of space to put it inside of my enclosure. As I have mentioned in the past, my old video doorbell (skybell) didn’t require a separate controller, it was all handled in the outside unit.

I was also able to get my echo devices to play a doorbell sound when the button is pressed. There is a bit of a delay but it works. That resolves the issue of no additional wireless chime so I can hear the bell in the back corner of the basement where my office is.

My primary annoyance now though is pressing the button has a slight delay in ringing the wired chime. Again, I didn’t have that issue with the old doorbell. In practice it won’t make a big difference to the usability, but still annoying when I know another (much older) product doesn’t have a delay. Maybe, (fingers crossed), this is fixable in firmware?

Posted earlier in this thread regarding the poor notifications and the big Wyze Google integration lie. Just want to share my setup and comparison to the Nest/Google Hello it replaced.

Nest Hello purchased Nov 2019 for $154 ($80 off MSRP). Grandfathered into 24hr continuous recording with 14 day history for $50/yr (continuous recording is no longer available for new users). Received an email in Sept that the price would increase to $80/yr starting Nov, a 60% increase! Immediately started looking to replace the doorbell. Bought the Wyze VDBv2 the day it was released. Already had Cam Plus Unlimited, so no additional monthly cost to add VDBv2 for full featured use.

Comparison of the $230 Nest vs the $40 Wyze:
Aspect ratio is identical (see photos). I like that they similarly stretched out the fisheye view to fit the screen. Not a fan of the peephole view with wasteful black corners. Video resolution is better with the Wyze, but contrast is better with the Nest (Wyze is over exposed). Features are virtually identical, but the Nest app UX is better (but I’m more invested in the Wyze ecosystem). Nest is better at seeing people and identifying faces, but face recognition is a new Wyze feature and will improve with time. Both require chime controller and both worked without issue with my mechanical chime, both with up to a 1 second delay. Nest phone (Android) instant notification with ringtone and controls blows away the simple Wyze push notification and very laggy VoIP call (typically within seconds, but sometimes up to 20 mins delayed). Nest Google Hub integration is seamless (obviously) with instant video, announcement with person’s identity (if recognized), controls to respond/talk through the Hub. Wyze workaround to view video (no controls) and announce (without identity). Video takes a while to load. Despite the significant notification/integration shortfalls of Wyze (correctable with possible future updates), the massive price discrepancy makes Wyze the obvious choice in my book. Always had the mechanical chime disabled with Nest, so the dog doesn’t go crazy and the kids don’t wake up at night. Enabled the mechanical chime during daytime hours for Wyze to compensate for the poor/unreliable notifications. Actually enjoying having the chime enabled and glad you can disable it at night.

The Google integration workaround:
How to set it up has been described enough in this thread, but here is how I configured it. When the doorbell recognizes a human shape, it turns on a lamp in the office for a minute, brings up the video feed on the Google Hub and verbally announced somebody at the front door, then turns video feed off after a minute. Used a Wyze bulb in the office as the intermediary device. I actually really like this setup, because the light turning on is a great visual notification that somebody is at the door (helpful since phone notifications are so terrible). I used the trigger of person recognition instead of doorbell press to compensate for the laggyness of the Google live feed and allows the Google Hub to load the video by the time the person rings the doorbell. Works great (obviously still not as well as the seamless Nest integration/controls).

Regarding not getting the mechanical bell inside to work, I was pulling my hair out and finally did get it to work after BOTH 1) using the alternate wiring method (two wires, one bell) AND 2) going in the app to Settings for the doorbell, then going to Chime and switching Doorbell Chime Type to Mechanical.

I had the same issue. Would be nice if it prompted you to chiose the type when setting it up.

I just happened to think to look if a setting to turn off the chime existed and saw that.

Totally agree. The step-by-step install in the app is so thorough that this seems like an obvious oversight.

Has anyone had the new doorbell show as offline? I have two hooked up and both show offline, yet I can go into either camera and view live footage or update the firmware. I do not receive any notifications though when the doorbell is pressed or movement is present. Worked with support and they are telling me to send back for a refund and then buy a new one. Just seems odd that two seem defective. One of them did work for maybe 10 minutes during Halloween and I got two notifications, other than that, they just stay in offline and no notifications. My v3 cameras have no issues on the same network.

Actually there is a prompt at the end of the setup to set the chime just before you finish. Easy to miss. Not sure if it would have taken you to chime setting because I ignored it with both doorbells I set up and did it after.

Not an oversight. Prompt is there more like a reminder rather than a step in the setup. Easy miss.

Clarification: The prompt is for choosing the chime, it does not specify chime type or that it should be mechanical for the vdbv.2. As you can see wnen you access the vdbv.2 chime settings there are 3 options. And for some unknown reason, even after you set the chime, there is a persistent window prompt to choose your chime when you open the v2 that you have to check the “Don’t ask me again” box to stop it.

Hello, I have a wyze white light bulb and it doesn’t show up in Google home starters or actions , are you using the colored ones maybe they’re set up different. I’ve also tried the outdoor weatherproof plug like mentioned by someone else and that doesn’t show up in the actions any suggestions. Thank you
LOL I figured it out I had it had the device to my home.
Well it worked one time and I can’t get it to do it again and I can’t figure this out. Might just have to wait for wyze to update doorbell.
I figured it out finally.
