Still cannot connect to my cameras when not on my home WIFI

For iOS you open settings, go down to the list of apps to WYZE app and tap the >
I don’t know about Android but it is probably similar.

For Android, it’s as simple as turning off WiFi. Data connection takes over automatically.

You don’t have to give the WYZE app permission to use Cell data? Doesn’t sound right to me.

Use of cell data is available to all Android apps unless the app itself restricts it.

No change. Same result. App already allowed background data usage

Seems you found the problem device when you removed it and all works as expected. Are you saying Wyze should fix your non-working router’s ability to work with your network and Wyze?

I waited for a while to respond in an effort to better understand what you are saying.

Not trying to offend, but I believe you found the problem.

Exactly. A workaround is not a solution.

I am hoping you find the bridged router works. Curious.

On Rogers here, and I can view my cams from cellular connection as long as they have been recently rebooted or power cycled. After about 30-60 min it stops working again. So I don’t think my modem is the problem…as this happened even when in bridge mode. I can reproduce the ability to connect again by simply rebooting/power cycling, which makes me think this is a wyze issue.

(apologies to you ssumerlin, I confused you with a different user who was not being very helpful.)

Every single other not Wyze wifi device in my house worked perfectly. The wyze cams also worked perfectly until the february incident.

After that everything not Wyze still worked perfectly, but not my wyze cams outside of my wifi network.

I would suggest that Wyze did something after the “incident” that changed the ability to view my 12 Wyze cams on cell only. I had to wipe out the wifi ability on the modem to get the cams to work properly. To be clear the outboard router was already in place a few years before the “incident” Since there are other users in this thread that are still to this date having problems viewing not on wifi I would suggest that the problem is in Wyze’s ballpark.

Also “jasonJ” from Wyze has said in this thread that they have identified the problem and were working on a fix. That was Feb 29th. Three months ago.

quote is below.

I am sorry this is happening. We have been looking into this issue and have located the root cause. We are currently working on the fix and hope to have it out soon.

One thing worth mentioning is that, among all the cameras, one remains working as intended despite the issue. This is the Doorbell Pro. Every time I open the camera group, the Doorbell Pro loads the live stream within seconds, while all other cameras fail to function. All devices are under the same network. I pointed this out when I reported the issue back in February.

I know little about network issues, but based on the device behavior, I agree with the assumption that the problem lies on the cloud server end.

I think you had an issue with another user that has a ‘S’ avatar. No problem here.

I may have misunderstood your findings. I thought you removed your original router and had only one other in place when you achieved success.

From that I can see an issue with how Wyze does not work with your non-working router. Either way, if it worked before, something changed.

Definitely a puzzling situation that needs a remedy. Best of luck.

I updated the app on my android phone and that fixed the problem. Try deleting the app then installing the current app. It worked for me.

@ps.cook Went down that rabbit hole yesterday with no success.

I am in a similar situation as you. I’ve used Wyze products since version 2 of the cameras, back when they really only made cameras. I can’t tell you how many people I have gotten to use their products based on my recommendations.

I didn’t have any issues with viewing cameras on the app (when not on home wifi) until a few months ago. They have worked reliably for years, aside from having to power cycle cameras occasionally. Not exactly a great feeling when I was out of the country for almost a week and wanted to check in on my home.

The way this has been handled is very disappointing and extremely off-putting as a customer. I feel insulted to get sale emails when they cannot bother to address and help out a core group of their customers.

I was going to pull the trigger to add their home security service to my Wyze portfolio, until this has happened (literally had everything in my cart for a few weeks while I researched other companies). It might not mean a lot as one of millions of customers, but I will be going elsewhere for home security and slowly converting my cameras over to a more reliable service.

It doesn’t matter how cheap the camera is - if I can’t view it, it is worthless.

I tried clearing the app cache, uninstalling, restarting the phone and reinstalling the app. Same problem unfortunately.

If anyone is aware Roku sells these cameras, they are identical to the wyze camera, they r the wyze camera, the app is even the same, only difference is cameras and app are labled roku, so i bought one roku camera to see if it would experience the same issue as all my wyze cameras and not be able to connect over cellular or off my home network, and to my suprise it works perfectly like my wyze used to, been hooked up for 3 days and not a single issue, can see camera on cellular and any other wifi network so that tells me network providers are not issue, i thought it was in my case cause my issues started after xfinity replaced my gateway, these are wyze cameras but obviously something is different, probably that they are running through roku servers and not wzye, there are missing features in the app of the roku compared to the wzye, kinda like the roku are the generic version of wyze, im sure as hell not wanting to replace all my wyze cameras with roku but if they cant figure this out soon ill consider it

Interesting findings.

Is the Roku cam using Wyze connectivity or Roku’s?

FYI just like with Wyze, there are people in the Roku forums posting that they can’t connect to their cameras away from home. And just like with Wyze it is only some people having the issue and not everybody.

It is my belief that this issue is somehow related to the TUTK protocol that both use to establish authentication.

Researchers alerted TUTK in October that there was a security flaw (albeit once that could only be used if you gave someone permission to be on your WiFi locally already, so not a big issue IMO). Wyze (and Roku) did an update at that time. Then TUTK issued their update in January and Wyze and Roku updated again presumably to comply with the TUTK changes. This roughly matches up to the timeframe of when some people started having trouble accessing the TUTK cameras away from home.

It’s still unclear why it seems to be kind of random, and only affecting some people and not others. But what you share is extremely interesting because even though some people are having this issue with wise and some people are having this issue with Roku. You found that the issue isn’t happening to you with both of them at the same time. I find that very very interesting! You’re still using the same router, the same settings and everything. I would have bet money that you would have likely had the same problem with both of them. It’s crazy that you’re not. I will probably pass that info on to some Wyze employees. Maybe one of the devs will get an idea of why that is.

Thanks for sharing.

Roku cameras are run/ran thru the roku app, right now i have 6 wyze cameras obviously run thru wyze app that i can only view on my home network, and i have 1 roku camera that is run thru the roku app that i can see from anywhere, both the wyze and roku cameras are run on same network just through their own individualed app,

Very interesting.

Thanks @schreck31 and @carverofchoice

This sure is an interesitng problem to solve or watch someone solve it.

There has to be a common thread some where in this haystack.

Do you have a hotspot on your phone you could try with each cam? Or is that even worth trying?
