WARNING: Do not assemble or install the Wyze Solar Cam Pan until further notice. We’re working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to develop corrected written and app instructions for set up of the Wyze Solar Cam Pan as a part of a thorough Consumer Product Safety Commission review of the product.
I don’t know (and I don’t speak for or represent Wyze anyway), but there is nothing public about it yet, even from the CPSC. There is no CPSC press release, recall notice, or publicly posted incident report.
Since there is no recall notice, and it implies they’re just updating the instructions (“working …to develop corrected … instructions for set up”), it stands to reason it must not be a serious functionality defect or very severe/dangerous or they would’ve recalled it. Could be a mounting failure (e.g., wrong screws/brackets for the camera or panel, leading to falls or damage) issue or something like that. Again, I’m totally guessing, but those kind of things have happened with other companies, and if it was more severe or a functionality defect you’d think they’d have issued a recall, and they didn’t. So my GUESS is it is just a bureaucratic stuff to avoid liability for someone mounting it wrong. But who knows. I look forward to hearing an official explanation and understanding why it was severe enough to get a warning, but minor enough that they just said they’re just updating the setup instructions (and not doing a recall). At least that’s my initial impression.
We’ve self-reported a safety issue with this product to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”)…We’ve received reports of the long wood screws being used to attach the solar panel to the camera instead of the short machine screws. When used in that location, the wood screws may breach the brass protective inserts, damage the internal battery, and create a safety risk.
Please read the ENTIRE article for the full details about what this means, what they are doing about it and what your options are.
I honestly don’t know how you would do this. These cameras are extremely easy to setup and install. The camera mount is great because it is easy to remove. Hope they don’t discontinue them.
My setup was easy. I can’t understand how anyone could mess that up. I guess if they don’t make it where you just pull off a sticker and just stick’em on, people will do stupid stuff. Its hard to think like low IQ people, and anticipate how they would screw something up.
My cloud recording on my already installed camera has stopped working. It is because of this? The camera functions fine for everything except it no longer does cloud recording.
I don’t believe that’s the case, as I’m still seeing cloud events for Solar Cam Pan. I read your similar comment in another topic and the one thought I have is that if Wyze has crippled in-app setup of Solar Cam Pan (which is hosing people who just want to move an already working Cam to a different Wi-Fi source), then they may have also disabled the Reset Services feature for Solar Cam Pan, which might be why that’s having no effect for you (as you mentioned in your other post). I’m just speculating about that, so I don’t know if that’s what they’ve done or not, but as aggressive (excessively and unnecessarily so, in my opinion) as they’re being with halting use of these Cams it wouldn’t surprise me.
That really doesn’t help your situation, unfortunately. I think the ultimate remedy will probably be that they’ll open/allow setup again once they finish their CPSC business. I have no idea when that will happen, but I think they should do a better job of communicating progress and a timeline.
Thanks for the input. They haven’t seen to fully thought this through and support doesn’t seem to be filled in with all the nitty details. I paid for the subscription just to do cloud recording, and it’s kind of pointless now.
I don’t disagree, and I’ve pinged someone at Wyze to try to get an update because it’s been 3 weeks now since the official announcement was posted here.
Personally, and this is 100% pure speculation on my part, I suspect that the cameras will all be recalled and service for these cams will eventually cease completely. Screwing into or attaching things to a battery case is not likely going to be found acceptable by anyone that truly cares about safety. ie: CPSC
Again, pure speculation on my part. With that said, I challenge everyone to think of any other product in the entire world that suggests screwing into (or attaching something to) the battery case for said product.
Again, based on my personal speculation, if it were me, I would get in front of the return flood and return my unit now/ASAP. Especially if it is no longer functioning as originally advertised or if it is not setup within the WYZE app.
I see your point, But the way I set mine up, I followed the instructions, my solar panel is mounted separately, so I didn’t screw into the battery at all. My set up is 100% safe, yet they broke my camera anyway and now I am stuck because some people can’t read instructions. I just got my refund for my years worth of service in the last 20 mins. IDK what I am going to do. Trying to research if Blink cameras are a viable option, but no sense in paying Wyze for service if I can’t use it while they work this out.
