Outdoor Camera Plans?

Axis makes that camera, and I think they’re only about $2k now.

I have 4 cams now. 2 were placed on my carport well covered about 7 months ago. Another was placed on my from porch about a month later, The forth placed above my door bell. All are well covered, and would only get WET in HIGH winds. I’ve had NO problems with any of them them.

I agree and it seems most are on the same page. A simple motion activated flood light gives perfectly adequate light for several yards and it also insures the Wyze Cam motion trigger to activate and record.

Only thing I would like is a bit more than 9 or 10 seconds of recording on motion detection. It is very quick and sensitive but sometimes the subject does not enter the video capture area for almost two seconds and I loose critical footage of what they are up to or a good face shot.

Right now, I’d be very happy to get a waterproof enclosure for my original Wyze Cam, power, cords, placement is quite simple if your a do it yourself guy like me.

I am interested in a weatherproof camera to be mounted underneath the roof eve. This will be condensation proof, good operating temperature protection from both solar and cold. I am interested in both motion, color night vision and sound for monitoring. I am not sure how you plan to address the wiring. It would be great if you can add a rechargeable battery option. Several people have expressed interest in these options.

Thank you.

I would love to have a weather resistant Wyze came to go under the front portch over my front door. and one for the back door.

First, aside from cost, I don’t think a battery is going to add enough value to the majority of applications.

USE CASE: viewing walkways, driveways and backyards in residential situations. These are typically areas that already have floodlights to illuminate the zone. These floodlights are often under eaves and out of the direct rain/sun, but could get wet. Being directly on the outside of a home, the wi-fi signal would likely reach or could easily be extended to reach.

SPECIFICS: I would want the functionality of the original unit inside a PAR38 floodlight body that just screws in. That’s the physical housing. The power would come from the socket. The floodlight switch would be left on. If there’s another bulb in the fixture, I would use a photo sensor to turn off the other light. Since the camera ties up a socket, I might add another socket onto the junction box unless the other bulb can be pointed in the direction of the camera. The existing lights would really enhance night viewing.

I have a couple version two cams, but I’d order five outside versions today if they existed. It seems other companies are starting to make these, so there must be a market. You guys can do it better!

Everybody I talked to wants and outdoor version but I think power would be a problem.

I would personally like to add a separate solar/battery pack so I can mount it INSIDE my mailbox.

Solar panel to mount on the outside of the mailbox, run a waterproof cable to a battery housing inside the mailbox. A regular or more waterproofed wyzecam would be magnetically mounted inside the mailbox as most are made of metal.

That way I would

  1. Get alerts when the mailbox is opened and what time the mail got there.

  2. Know if there is mail there or not I can check the camera and not bother going outside to check. I think the battery won’t last just on solar alone so maybe make it removeable so I can take the battery out to charge inside the house on Sundays when there is no mail delivery?
I guess an external waterproof antenna would be helpful as mailboxes are usually very far from the router or even mesh wireless signals.

  3. Maybe see if somebody is stealing my mail. Probably won’t see their face though.

Sometimes ebay deliveries are small enough that the postal service will put them in the mailbox.

Videos stolen along with the camera. Possible solution…

I was just thinking about the concern many had about the camera being stolen with the SD card in it.

I think I have a possible solution. Just bought the google Mesh wifi 3 pack system. Greatest wifi system I ever set up.

Perhaps the recording of the outdoor cameras can be done on separate wyze device on the network and work in a similar fashion to the Mesh network. Imagine a camera with everything but the lens. This would act like a really cheap DVR and can be hidden anywhere in the home. As long as it’s on the wifi network, it can record multiple cameras. Why not have these mini recording hubs with 2,4 + SD slots.

Who says the SD cards have to be in the camera?

Just a thought…

Installed 5 V2 outside, 3 of them using the <$1 metal plates from home depot. The 1st pair I use a 5V/2A power supply, not the Wzye 5V/1A one, then 10 feet cable to the 1st camera, then daisy chained to the 2nd camera, in the picture, with a 15 feet cable. It is not that secure but so far so good.

Love your camera!

For me, the best outdoor features would be something weatherproof with an optional solar add-on kit. I’d be fine with something only triggered by motion if we could increase the recording duration - 15 seconds is too short.

Ring now has that offering in their portfolio

I like this idea! Maybe I will design and develop an after market solution to the V2.

I love the cost of the Wyze camera. So I wouldn’t change the camera at all except to weatherproof it. For outdoors, I prefer the V2 or Pan cam with weatherproofing for rain, snow, hail, wind, high temps, and low temps. Keep the USB power & SD card capability the same. I’ll use a longer USB cable or install a new outlet for the current USB cable. Maybe add a battery or solar power as an option with the current USB connection.

I just mounted a Pan outside, upside down. It’s somewhat covered, but it’s going to get some spray on it when it rains with wind. I covered the SD and Setup slots with tape, but I didn’t want to cover the ventilation grid. We’ll see how it goes. Worst case, I’m out 30 bucks.

I just found these cameras and I’m waiting for my order. I’ve curious about when you say daisy chained. What do you mean? I noticed that there is a usb and micro usb. Did you run power to 1 port and then out of the 2nd to a 2nd camera? Or does the power supply have 2 ports?

Hey Dan,

How did you provide power to it outside? did you string a cord out there?

The USB A port on the camera is there so that you can plug in a second power cord to power a second camera. I have a few setup like this.

Not intended that way on the Pan. Would not make sense to have the cable swinging around either.

I agree. I’m curious what the Pan’s user guide describes the USB A port as. The V2 calls it “USB Output”. I don’t know of any other use for the USB A port other than powering another camera.
