There is no use for it at the consumer level. They officially describe it as “future use” or something like that. It’s vestigial, like the appendix.
How about a weather resistant version with a solar panel on top, rechargeable battery, and a gain antenna for longer reach to wifi? This model would also use the usb outlet connect as well. Maybe a version with a light that activates with motion as well.
Would really like “Black” LEDs so night time intruders are not alerted to surveillance.
For night vision, I mean…
Battery + hardwired (option) and extended range please
I made this for the Cam Pan and it worked out well!
Nice. No issues with IR reflection? Can you provide part descriptions and sources?
You took the question out of my mouth… IR reflection issues?
nice but it looks like you cannot capture sound or relay voice
I’m running a test system - long range WiFi, outdoor, solar power to a USB power bank. The parts under experimentation sets the Wyze cam under a full overhead protector, a large solar panel charging a 12-volt battery, an inverter for 12v-110v outlet, the USB power plugged into 110v outlet, USB cord to camera. This is overkill!!
The plan is for a compact, sealed housing for externally mounted solar panel (8x8in) on top, camera and USB power bank inside. The size requirements for the solar panel is determined by the power bank, and right now I’m looking at 24000 mAH unit for minimum overnight camera operation, and a solar panel capable of keeping the power bank charged with 2 days of daylight.
The wifi to connect it all is a Ubiquiti router that is communicating NOW with the camera operating 300 ft from the external antenna!!! I don’t know how far away I can put the camera and still reach it.
All ideas are appreciated.
You are right - massive overkill. From a power standpoint you would be far better to eliminate the AC inverter and just go with a DC voltage regulator to get from the 12V battery / solar system to the 5V needed by the camera. Something like a cigarette lighter USB adapter. With the inverter, you are likely going to waste most of your energy.
Do let us know how the project goes.
Yes. Obviously the IR and sound will not work but I mostly wanted it to scan the backyard during the day with emphasis on our bird feeder. I have other security cameras for night time security.
I bought the 11 x 20 cm bell jar on Amazon. It came with a grooved wood base. I drilled a hole in the bottom for the cable and used silicon sealant to seal around the cable and in the groove. Should not have to remove it very often but can cut the silicon if necessary to remove the glass bell jar.
What is nice is the 360 degree view.
Could mount an external IR array I suppose and I have not really tried the sound. It may be a little muffled.
The issue he was asking about is that with the camera’s IR turned on, it usually reflects from glass. Curved glass may mitigate this. So the question is…can you view it at night without a problem? Could you post a night picture from the camera?
The night pic just shows the IR LEDs in the reflection. Just turned them off. My experience is the IR is really not very useful anyway except for things up close.
I believe that also turns off the night mode for the sensor, no? Night mode helps at any distance, while the IR lighting is only up close, as you say. I don’t have any of these cameras running right now as I’ve moved on to other tech projects (Z-wave and Homekit bridges on a Raspberry Pi), but I thought there was only a single button for lighting and night mode.
where do you plan to put it ? is it only waterproof or do you need built in battery ? how far will it be from router ? do you need it to constantly monitor something, or only triggered by motion ?
It was back in January 2018 when you posted that an outdoor camera was being considered. So, is it still being considered or any update to give us?
To answer your survey questions:
- Plan to put it under the overhang on front and sides of house.
- Waterproof is a must of course. Battery would be nice for some, but I could easily get 110 power cord to it from outside 110 wall plugs or from my garage plugs
- Router would be about 40 feet and two walls from all cameras
- Motion detection would be preferred, but must at least be able to have lens panning ability.
- Basically would want a weatherproof Wyze PAN cam!!
Is there a plan to build a battery-operated camera?
Considering that the last time they introduced a new camera there was no real announcement, I would say nobody will tell you that. But you can add a battery to the existing camera.
