Floodlight pro actions. Comments requested

Am considering buying the 3 bulb WYSE FLOODLIGHT PRO but am concerned how functional the motion lights are if/when WiFi signal is lost?
I have two v3 (soon to be v4) outdoor cams that are nearby to the driveway which work
but don’t know if I have enough signal to run the floodlights.
I need to have the floodlights come on regardless of whether WiFi is always present when motion occurs.
Driveway security lighting when motion occurs.

Any comments appreciated about the fixture functionality is appreciated.

Mine has worked when it didn’t have internet.

Sometimes I have wished it didn’t because them I don’t know when it’s offline.

But it will probably only do this if it can setup in the first place. Most Wyze cameras will not work in certain ways unless they can at least connect to the Internet when they first boot up.

For the most part, I would recommend looking into getting either a Wi-Fi extender or a mesh router so you can have better Internet father away. Mesh is better.

Thank you Carver.
If I buy, I will need to hire an installer/electrician so I am trying to cover all bases.
Will definitely need to improve my signal.
My current signal to my 2-v3 cams is from an nearby extender but its signal is too weak to handle to add the nearby floodlight,
So I will definitely need more signal.
My router is a SPECTRUM CABLE with my additional extender. I will need to andd to this. Any particular brand mesh or extender that has worked for you?

To be quite blunt, you can literally buy absolutely ANY mesh router on the market and it will be a better experience with better performance than any stock Cable company gateway sent by your ISP. :+1:

Which one you should get can be rather subjective but even the cheapest mesh routers are exponentially superior to any cable gateway.

Try something out and keep in mind that you can always use the return policies if something doesn’t suit your needs, including the Wyze Floodlight.

For me, I love the Wyze Floodlight Pro. I have 7 of them.

I guess I should still answer this directly. I have used an ASUS mesh router that worked really well. I also used the wyze mesh routers that worked really well. I am currently using a more advanced router system with ubiquiti UniFi, but I really only recommend those ones to more advanced people. uniFi routers are a little more advanced than most people need, but I have a pretty complicated network with over 150 devices using more than 2 TB of data per month.

Most people can get by on way cheaper mesh routers. So don’t feel like you should follow what I have. I just recommend using a mesh router in general because it’s better than using extenders. Sometimes using extenders still. Has you have networking problems. While using mesh routers makes everything work seamlessly and a lot better. So any mesh router, even the cheaper mesh routers will be pretty good for you.

The current floodlight pro firmware (2.2.1.1168) has a bug that stops the floodlight from turning on even when there’s motion. If you get one, don’t update beyond firmware 2.2.1.1135. Wait for the next stable firmware release.

What? All of mine are still turning on just fine :

Haha, yeah, I have too many cameras constantly uploading cloud events.

There have been similar reports on this forum. There’s a bug that renders the floodlight not turning on. A reboot fixes the problem temporarily. Search the forum.

Edit -

It turns on manually, but doesn’t automatically. And this isn’t new; this has been going on for a while now.

Interesting. I believe you, just wondering why it’s not affecting any of my 7 FLPros. I wonder what the difference is. It must be some difference in settings or something. Hopefully Wyze got enough logs to figure it out and fix it for everyone having that issue. These are my favorite camera. I’d be heart broken if they weren’t working well

That has to be my number one question in this forum.

I see no problems with my cams, but others have multiple issues. It should be plug and play.

I could see issues occur on more complicated devices, but these cams are relatively simple.

you can use an old router as an extender hope this helps.

What makes them to be your favourite? I am being curious as I don’t own one and I am in the market for a floodlight, either regular or camera based.

I am not telling you to get this router, just telling you what I have. I have two Eero 6s at two properties. They have an amazing range, at both locations I have a single device, no additional satellites. At the cottage I get a signal on my dock some 120 ft away, mind you is straight line of sight with only a glass window in between. At home, the router is located at the end of the house and I get two bars on a V3 cam on the other side of the house some 35-40 ft away through two drywall walls, one cement block wall and a metal garage door. The I open the garage door the camera gets three bars. They are easy to setup and remote managed via the app. One thing to remember though, these routers are not for power users, they are designed and sold for people who don’t want to play around with settings. That is one thing that I don’t like about them as I like to tinker around. Having said that, from my experience, they’re pretty smart to route internet traffic without any major issues. They are pretty much plug-and-play or set-it-and-forget-it routers.

The Floodlight Pro is awesome. I have 7!

  • The Field of View is amazing. It’s hard to understand how awesome it is until you try one, but it’s amazing and I expected that a good FOV would require it to be really fish-eye/bubbly and it’s actually pretty great. I can see basically 180 degrees and miss nothing with a single camera. This is one of the best things about it one camera covers everything.
  • The 2.5K resolution is great.
  • Image quality is great and it adjusts well to the brightness for me so nothing is washed out.
  • 3000 Lumens is extremely bright! Good enough to see anything clearly with the camera
  • I love the ambient lighting
    • I set it between 1%-10% depending on which floodlight it is, to have it on constantly and only go full blast 100% brightness when AI detections occur.
    • 1% ambient lighting is enough to never use Nightvision IR
  • Only turns on full blast 100% when a person is detected (I set mine to do this when they are anywhere in sight, not just on my property), or for the one on my garage, when a moving car comes up my driveway or a person is detected (ignores pets, and all other motion) = Research has actually shown that floodlights which only turn on for people, etc are one of the best deterrents against burglars.
  • Local/Edge AI detections for things work free without a subscription (though I have a subscription, but this helped convince my brother these would be awesome for him)
  • Vehicle detection is limited to moving vehicles, not parked vehicles (tons of people complain about this on the other cams, and this cam solves that issue)
  • It also has a ton of other great things that are applicable to other Wyze cams, but the above are the differences I really like a lot…
Even my neighbors love it...example in the dropdown

I have a neighbor that comes up to me all the time and asks me to go find some kind of footage for him. :joy: His reaction the first time I told him I had a recording of an incident was priceless. He was so excited and didn’t even realize the FLPro was a camera. He was actually HAPPY I had a camera there. And while I block out his house with a detection zone to only do cloud events for what happens on my property, I do have the SD card recording backup, so I can go find something if he tells me he needs something. Just last week one of his garbage cans went missing and he came running over to my house to ask me if I could figure out who stole his garbage can. Turned out the Garbage truck stole it. :joy: So at least the city couldn’t fine him for the missing garbage can when they’re the ones who stole it and we had proof it was their fault, not his.

My main complaint is that it doesn’t have Timelapse even though they said they would get it. I don’t think they will now.

I’ve had several different floodlights and floodlight cameras let alone normal cameras (I even still have cameras from 6 different companies) and this thing is just amazing and the best camera I’ve had for sure. I love it. WyzeHongfei did an AWESOME job designing and launching this thing I met him in person once and told him so to his face. This should be the gold standard of the type of thing they should try to live up to for the rest of their camera launches, at least for the pro line of cameras.

I understand that as a Floodlight and Pro camera it’s more expensive (though still cheaper than most competitors), but I watched for sales, etc. I even got one of them for like $65 on a TikTok Sale which was too good to not get another one. They regularly sell for $99 or less which is still a killer deal IMO for these things. I mean, they’re still great at full price (I bought some that high when they first came out) and better than Ring, etc…but for the extras I waited for steeper sales. They’re not good for everyone’s use-cases, but they were perfect for mine. I’ve really enjoyed them.

Thanks for the mini review. I might get one and give it a try as it seems like something might work well in my case.

Carver,
What a great response. Very informative.
I can’t no longer do any outside installs myself but fairly literate using the iPad for Wyze setups.
Thanks all.

A year ago when I was installing my Floodlight Pro, the Wyze app kept saying that the WiFi signal was too weak in the spot where I wanted to install it, even though my phone showed a good (3 bars) WiFi signal. I considered installing an extender or mesh system but didn’t end up needing to do so.

I first set up the floodlight inside the house using alligator clips and an extension cord to power it. Even inside the house, the app kept showing “Weak connection” and “Your device may experience connectivity issues if mounted here.” I ignored that and completed the setup. The floodlights and cam worked fine. I then mounted it outside in the same spot the app showed as having a weak signal, and it has worked fine there ever since.

I can’t comment about whether the motion-activated light works without WiFi signal, because as far as I can tell it has never lost the signal.

I suspect the app had a bug in regards to the message about WiFi strength during the Floodlight setup; I don’t know if that message has been fixed since then. I’m just mentioning this in case you or anyone else gets that same message - it doesn’t necessarily mean that the Floodlight won’t work in that location.
