Wyze sucks

So let me get this straight… they sucked (bricking, picture quality, recording dust/snow)… but you kept buying them until you had 10 cameras? And because now they are “up high” (of which you had to do 10 times), it would take “days” to replace… so… just live with it and complain in a forum?

Did it occur to you they could have been purchased at once? Did it also occur to you they could have operated reasonably well until recent software updates?

For those here accusing the whiners [Mod Edit] of complaining too much about Wyze, compared to their own personal experience, I offer a word of caution. Your experience with this company may have been all roses and wedding cake up to now, but eventually you will be shafted too, just as they were. A product that inexplicably stops working, a feature that suddenly disappears, endless lip service from Support, a promised refund that never materialized. Being screwed over by a vendor they thought could be trusted to do the right thing not only leaves the victims angry, but also encourages them to try to warn others so that they may avoid the same callous treatment. Been there, now in the Victim column.

No. That didn’t happen. No update had recently bricked cameras or removed functionality.

Everything is working as it has been. Minor tweaks and nuisances.

It occurred to me that you are vague posting but really have nothing to say. Usual Internet forum complaining.

I mounted the overpriced V2 OUTDOOR Cam per the instructions for ceiling mounting . The first one stopped working within a month. obtained another to replace and it stopped working in about the same time.
I pulled it down and brought it inside to see if I could find a reason why…
Shortly afterwards I found it was leaking water as it began to melt.

This product is not an outdoor product!

How did you have it mounted? Picture that you can post of how it was mounted an where?

As I stated, it was mounted like a ceiling mount, with the camera hanging from magnet at the top. I needed additional space behind camera to attach solar connection. It is the only camera I have mounted fully exposed to the elements, without an overhang. No pictures as I have taken it down.

Been super happy with Wyze products. Mostly because their price point lets me be able to play. If I wanted top of the line I’d be looking at Poe cameras. Most people aren’t willing to run a cat5 cable but will be mad at the $50 cameras limitations lol

To those of you with a bad Wyze experience, not everyone’s is bad. For those of you with a good Wyze experience, not everyone’s is good. That said, I have several Wyze cameras that have worked well … until they did not. I’ve got six set up outside and I am never able to pull up more than three or four of them. Lots of waiting for them to connect and often they never do. It’s a security camera. If I cannot pull it up and see what’s going on instantly, then it is worthless. I would be interested to know what else is out there that is not too terribly expensive but that also is dependable. I’m sick of getting irritated every time I depend on them to work and they do not. I would rather give my money to a vendor that doesn’t irritate me.

This is absolutely true. To be honest, I used to have a lot of connection problems and needing to restart my cameras, etc, and I thought Wyze was the problem. Then some of my friends told me they had a nearly flawless experience. We were both using the exact same company and devices, but our experience was totally opposite, so I had to ask myself, if the company and devices aren’t the difference here, what is? And I dove down a huge rabbit hole to figure out why their experience was perfect and mine was not. I made a list of everything I found that contributed to connection differences here:

The end result was that I turned from being someone with a bad experience with bad Wyze connection issues to becoming one of the people who suddenly had a nearly flawless experience despite now having over 40 cameras and over 300 total Wyze devices. All of them work great. So I am fairly convinced the company usually isn’t really the main problem. I encourage other people with connection issues to start asking themselves similar questions. If some people are able to have a near flawless experience with excellent connectivity, and the difference is not the company and not the device, what else could the difference be, and then explore some of those things if you want an improved experience. There is no camera company out there that has all their users with perfect connectivity, and this is the biggest reason why. Lots of it is environmental and router protocol differences, among dozens of other variables.

Still, for those interested in this question:

I can’t speak on “dependable” because that will depend on a lot of things in your particular situation of which nobody can have any knowledge. If someone asked me what was dependable for me, I would say Wyze is extremely dependable for me for the last several years since I fixed the issues that were causing it not to be. But I can speak on what many other people feel are strong competitors to Wyze:

  • Reolink
  • TP Link Tapo
  • Eufy
  • Yi
  • Blink
  • Roku (uses Wyze though, so if you are having problems with Wyze, then you probably will with Roku too)

There are lots of more expensive ones too, but those are most of the Wyze-pricing/feature-level competitors. I believe all of them are Chinese-owned companies except for Blink (and Roku)…which means they are all subject to the Chinese Government requiring they turn over all their user data and give them access to everything without you ever knowing it. But I don’t think there are a lot of affordable US-based companies competing on Wyze’s level. Most of the other US-based ones are a little more expensive:

  • Ring
  • Arlo
  • Nest

But those are all of the most common ones people talk about. There are several more obscure options too. None of them are perfect, but some of them will work better for some people than others (such as work with a person’s particular router protocols better or something) and some of them suit people’s particular preferences better over all. Certainly each company is better for different people in different ways. I hope everyone finds whatever works best for them. :+1:

I think it might be the quality of the hardware. It is odd so many people have problems while so many do not. I have been extremely lucky.

I suggested my friend buy into Wyse and he mentioned his playback button was greyed-out on his first purchased cam. He returned it under warranty and his last two cams work great. He re-used his SD card and all was well.

The problem is too intermittent with the hardware. Seems there needs to be better quality control.

Running a proper network is not rocket science. My 92 year old Dad hooked up his cam and has no issues.

Understandably, Wyse is not a camera company, they are a gadget company. I understand that and accept it. I enjoy the cheap cams for what they do. I don’t trust Wyse with security but I enjoy the cams.

I wouldn’t commit to buy any Wyse product for the security and safety for my family. That is why I would never buy a Wyse door lock from a gadget company. If the lock fails, security is compromised. If a Wyse camera fails it is not a threat to my family.

Wyze is a great entry into any sort of gadgets. You can learn from your purchase for when you purchase a real security cam.

Flipping burgers is not a career but a great starting point to get experience and then go for a real job. I am always surprised what people expect out of a $25 camera.

Lets be real though. There is no such legally available consumer camera or alarm system that can give you “SAFETY” from someone determined to do you harm. The best a camera can be used for in such situations is to maybe give you a little bit of advanced warning, and possibly have help start coming on the way to negotiate or help with the aftermath. The cameras themselves don’t actually DO anything except prove what happened to you or that you’re telling the truth or justified if you need proof later.

Security Cameras are primarily to give you a few seconds advance notice and possibly for later identification. They don’t actually STOP anything beyond potential deterrence/fear of being identified.

With that in mind, they have always worked great for me and they work well for automations, saving family memories, reviewing things that happened earlier in the day, baby monitors, reassurance, telling me when someone or a package is at my door, if someone is using my pool, check on my pets while I’m on vacation, etc. Those are all things I use them for regularly and they don’t let me down. I do use them for “security” in the sense I listed above, but I have no false impression that any camera can actually stop anyone from hurting me or entering my house if someone is determined to do so. That’s not what cameras are designed for. So I would posit the claim they actually work pretty great [for me] for their intent. :man_shrugging:

I know this is a joke, but that sounds like a tort lawyer’s favorite dream:

  1. Privacy concerns
  2. Health risks from ionizing radiation (cancer)

Other issues:

  • Cost
  • Maintenance
  • Legal and ethical challenges
  • False positives, artifacts, and limited usefulness making it extremely ineffective

It’ll never happen. :joy: Definitely not the future.

I like the creativity though! Maybe we can start with something like a thermal camera lens! I’d love one that watches all heat changes. Or maybe one that uses something like lidar to reconstruct exact 3D imagery and overlay that in color, etc… There are some really cool things that “could” be done.

I agree with what you said about the cams. I have been lucky myself with Wyse cams. I just don’t think you could sell me on getting a Wyze door lock or gun safe.

For the price, the cams work for me. I feel sorry for the others with issues. If you can fix the problem by changing the camera out with another; seems the problem went with the camera. it’s easy for users to blame Wyse, but it is also easy for support to blame the user’s network. I am not saying you fall into that group. You are quite helpful and patient. Too bad there is not a diagnostic program you can run on the camera and/or user’s network.

One benefit of the original Door lock is that it mostly just uses the same outdoor lock you already have. It just makes it so you can get notifications, and do other things if you choose (or not). For business, I don’t have to worry about ex-office workers copying keys. I can just never give them a key in the first place and revoke their access if they have to get fired for bad behavior, and the building manager can still use the key if they need to, all the while allowing me to make sure things are locked when they should be, and stay unlocked during business hours and tell me WHO accessed it and when, etc. Very useful IMO.

It is absolutely not as simple as some false dichotomy answer. Wyze acknowledges there are things they can continually do to improve this for people who are having struggles and frustrations. :+1: Their experience is valid.

Believe it or not, they actually used to have one. I forgot the name of it since I haven’t used it since like 2020. It was a partnership with some other app company, but that partnership was terminated and new one hasn’t been established. It was kind of cool and seemed really helpful.

I think you are referring to “RouteThis Helps”. I still have it on my phone and surprisingly still scans the network but you can’t view the report any more. It will give you a key /log that you forward to tech support.
