In theory, I’d just like to create an Alexa routine to “when: front door sensor opens”, “Alexa will say front door has been opened.” Is the hub absolutely required for this to occur or has anyone successfully been able to bypass that purchase?
You absolutely need the hub. That is the only connection to Wyze servers and the internet for the sensors.

As WildBill explained…the sensors need the hub. The reason for this is that the sensors run on 915 MHz RF signals. So, you can’t connect them to a WiFi Router or Bluetooth, or Zigbee, or anything else you probably have which function on a different wave length. You need to connect them to the hub and the hub connects to the internet (through WiFi or Ethernet) and through the internet they can then connect to Alexa. Without the hub, they can’t connect to anything.
