Thank you SlabSlayer for coming up with this innovative workaround. I tried this and it works just like you described. However, in my particular situation it does not. I have my light on in the ambient mode. Ideally I would like the Alexa routine to turn the light off after 5 minutes and put light back in the ambient mode. Unfortunately, it completely turns the light off and the ambient mode doesn’t come back until the next day at sunset. Any ideas how we can still make use of the ambient mode with this workaround?
Glad this one is still open.
And NO, “This topic has been solved” is NOT correct.
This is the flagship most expensive cam Wyze has if I am not mistaken, and it should have all the rules engines and available features that their cheaper cams and floodlights have.
And I would venture to guess that it is not even the cam that needs firmware updating, just the rules engine and or the app that has to address it.
The neighbors get ticked off when a rule turns them on then they stay on all night.
You are 100% correct! I’m not sure why it’s saying the topic has been solved? I am still waiting on this to be corrected. I would replace the rest of my old flood lights with these if they could get this one item fixed! I don’t want to have to download some random app or use Alexa to turn my flood lights back off like they’re supposed to. ![]()
Amazing that Wyze hasn’t weighed in on this, doesn’t see this thread, and doesn’t realize this gap
There have been several different threads on this that have been closed, so they should be very aware of it.
But it should be plastered on the facebook pages too, because that is viewed by them as much more visible to the public than the forum, and may then take more notice to show they are listening.
That’s a Discourse feature and the prerogative of the user who created the topic. If @nb0023 believes that a sufficient answer was provided, then as the creator of this topic @nb0023 can mark a reply as the solution. Most categories within the Forum operate this way.
I agree that this is something Wyze should fix (and add Timelapse to Cam Floodlight Pro while they’re at it) and that the “solution” shouldn’t have to involve the use of a third-party platform, and I don’t even use this device! I also wonder if this would be a case for using the Plug work-around (using a Wyze Plug and its “Has been on for” Action as a logical switch in a Trigger Automation) to keep the function all within the Wyze ecosystem unless/until Wyze actually corrects this oversight.
No, the plug wouldn’t work, because we are just talking about the light portion being on, not the whole camera light bundle together.
Please note that I’m not suggesting the use of a Plug to control power to Cam Floodlight Pro but speculating that it could be used as a logical switch available for Automations so that the floodlight can borrow its Actions to compensate for features that aren’t directly available to Cam Floodlight Pro within Automations. Like I said, I don’t have this device, so I’m only speculating, but I wonder if it would be possible to set up a couple of Device & Service Triggers something like this:
- If Cam Floodlight Pro detects motion, then turn on the light and turn on Plug.
- If Plug has been on for 1 minute, then turn off Cam Floodlight Pro’s light and turn off Plug.
In this case, the Plug would just be plugged into power but not actually controlling power to a second device. It just needs to have power and a Wi-Fi connection so that it’s available for use in Automations, and then the Triggers are using the Plug’s available Automations Actions as a work-around to compensate for what’s lacking in Cam Floodlight Pro’s available Actions.
Again, I’m speculating somewhat here because I don’t have this particular product, so I don’t know exactly which Actions are available, but I’ve read about the lack of the “Turn on for” Action for this floodlight camera model (which baffles me) and thinking this might be a work-around. Ultimately, though, I believe Wyze should fix this themselves by adding the “Turn on for” Action for Cam Floodlight Pro in Automations so that other work-arounds (third party or otherwise) shouldn’t be necessary.
Dude!
I think you did it!
Work around that is…
I do have some Plugs that are not being used.
- Set the person detected of the cam v3 to turn on Floodlight Pro light on. (Because there is no “turn on for” setting, this will stay on permanently,
- Add an action setting for turn on plug for 5 mins.
- Set trigger action for the plug, when turns off, turn off Floodlight Pro.
That pretty much makes that plug a dedicated accessory for the floodlight though.
Looks like we could do the same with a lightbulb as well, maybe dedicate that light to be a visual notification of person detected as well.
Doesn’t even have to just be for an actual solution either. I’ve marked solution in the past to ensure a comment farther down. The thread is immediately seen by any new person who comes to the thread. It may not technically be a solution, but it could involve an explanation everybody needs to know about or a workaround or really good inside or place people should jump to to start reading if they’re just coming to the thread. Benefit of marking solution is it links the solution marked post to be attached to the bottom of the first post so everybody can see it right away.
A lot of new people appreciate that. To save time on Trina scour through hundreds of other posts. Wondering where the important one they want to read is. I think people should Mark solution a lot more often even if a bug is still active. Of course in that case Crease will get marked as posting a solution a few dozen times a day. ![]()
I’m glad that works! ![]()
I can’t really take the credit, though. @carverofchoice clued me into this on the Wyze Discord server via @Thesilente’s post when I wanted to have a Video Doorbell v2 button press trigger an announcement on Google Home smart speakers and displays. Since then I’ve used it for other things and like to keep spare Plugs or Plug Outdoors (2 outlets/logical switches in one device) on hand for these kinds of Automations work-arounds.
That’s correct. What I’ve done with the doorbell is have a bulb-type air freshener plugged into the Plug and have the Plug start in an “on” condition. When the doorbell button is pressed, the Plug turns off for one minute and then resets to “on” via the Wyze Automations and Google Home Routines I use. That way the Plug isn’t just taking up an outlet that can’t be used.
That’s also correct, and I’ve done that, too. Depending on the use case and Bulb placement, a Bulb might actually be a better solution for doing something like providing additional illumination to an area when the floodlight is triggered or providing an additional visual cue when a user has a hearing impairment or doesn’t want to disturb a housemate with an audible announcement (like if the Cam notifications are linked to Amazon Alexa). ![]()
Right, and my understanding is that Discourse staff (usually administrators and moderators) can also mark replies as “solutions”, but I tend to see it used mostly by topic creators.
Not nearly that many, but I’m tryin’! ![]()
Apparently there’s also a badge feature that could be enabled, but then I’d probably just do something silly with that in another topic I started.
That looks cool, though I’m just under the 100 mark (94) so I’d be in the Know it all badge working toward the Solution Institution badge:
I think it would be great to enable them. However, it would also incentivise people to mark their own replies as solutions just so they can have more solutions to get the badge. I wonder if there is a setting to enable it to exclude any self-solutions.
I know a long time ago in the past, if I started a thread, sometimes I would post a detailed reply summarizing all the solutions and insights into 1 post and then mark that as the solution. In some cases it may have been me who came up with the solution and troubleshooting, etc, but in some cases there were several users who contributed to the solution(s) and I couldn’t mark them all as solutions, so I would combine them all into one and mark that as a solution. In more recent years I will instead just edit the original post and post an update at the bottom instead of marking a single post as the single solution/workaround.
Still, I might go post about it in the forum feedback thread and ask Loki to enable it. Any other cool badges worth asking to be enabled? I like gamification.
Yeah, did it again here too.
That seems like a good use of the feature to try to help other users (especially new users, like you mentioned before) find a good answer quickly. ![]()
I don’t know.
I don’t usually poke around in Discourse Meta much unless I’m looking for an answer to a specific question. Even if there are, then I might try earning some (or creating new parody “badges”) just for silliness and leave the competition to the rest of you.
See? Totally need a badge for that. ![]()
Trying to steer back to the topic at hand, though, for anyone who hasn’t already done so I’d recommend visiting the Wishlist topic linked above to vote, comment, and keep that topic bumped, because this feature seems long overdue. Like I said, it baffles me that this is missing from this product, and I think it’s reasonable to expect a “Pro” model to have all the same features that previous models have (including Timelapse in this case), as others have commented elsewhere.
Part of me also thinks about the issue with finally getting Cam Outdoor and its hub fixed fairly recently after a dedicated community member went on a crusade to hound a Wyze product manager about it, though that case was about restoration of a feature that existed before and then was broken in the past by firmware updates. This would be pestering Wyze to add a feature that wasn’t originally present (but very likely should have been), so it’s different, and I’m not sure how effective that would be. ![]()
FYI:
I’m so dang happy about this!! I had given up
Just adjusted all my automations, yay!
Excellent! I hope it works as expected! ![]()
Your username was one of the first I thought of when I saw this in the new app version announcement, because I know you’ve been very vocal about this for a long time.
Yes, as soon as I saw your notification come through I checked my settings and smiled ![]()
