Wyze Camera notification sound

Using new 3.1.0 app and just today (9/10) I noticed my camera detection notifications changed to a Wyze sound. I had these notifications set to a “Camera Shutter” custom sound, but can not find how this was lost or how to regain this setting. I suspect some minor bug fix that was available 9/5 futzed this up. PLEASE continue to fix your bugs without causing users other issues. I relied on this unique sound to help determine Wyze notifications from all other notifications and I do not like your 3 Wyze Sounds!

I made the same discovery on Sunday, September 8th. I contacted Wyze support and was told that they removed the ability to set customized sounds for the app and that there are 3 or 4 standardized app sounds for everyone to use to make it “distinct” for the Wyze app. I informed them that the available sounds are not “distinct” to the Wyze app and can be downloaded by anyone on many apps available in app stores and for my safety and security of my property, I relied on a specific notification sound that would wake me from a sleep when I need to be alerted of activity on my property. None of the current available sounds will wake me from a sleep. I’m extremely disappointed that they took this option away from us and now my safety and security are compromised. They offered the suggestion of joining the forum and expression my concerns to possibly be considered for future enhancements.

Some of us have the opposite experience and have never been able to get the app-provided sounds to work for Wyze notifications. :man_shrugging:

Since you’re using Android, and presumably your “Camera Shutter” sound is still somewhere on your device, you should be able to do something like this (depending on your Android version):

  1. Long-press the Wyze app icon in your launcher or list of applications.
  2. Tap App info in the pop-up menu.
  3. On the App info screen, tap Notifications.
  4. On the resulting screen, tap whichever WyzeMessage entry is indicating that it’s sending you the most frequent notifications.
  5. On the WyzeMessage screen, tap Sound (it may say “App provided sound” at this point).
  6. Navigate to and select your “Camera Shutter” sound.
  7. Test by generating an event.

Welcome to the Forum, @monica_kraus!

I’ll start by saying that I haven’t yet updated to the v3.1 app (largely because Wyze does stuff like this, so I have auto-update disabled for the Wyze app in Google Play Store), so I can’t say with any certainty that the process I outlined above will work with this specific app version, but the app version should be irrelevant, and those steps should work for pretty much any app’s notifications in Android, provided that you’re using real Android and not something funky like OxygenOS.

I suspect that this response from Support is not accurate (I’m not saying that I don’t trust your reporting; I’m saying that I think Support may have given you inaccurate information), because this doesn’t jibe with my experience using Android in general.

First of all, the Forum is primarily a user-to-user community, so it’s kind of nice that Support recognizes the value provided by other users here, in a way, but I hope they’re not just foisting your issue off to another platform when they can’t resolve it directly. Second, if Wyze actually did manage to disable any ability for custom alerts, though (which I don’t know how they could do at the Android OS-level of notification management), then there actually is a Wishlist collecting suggestions related to future development of the v3 app:

If you poke around or use the Forum’s search feature, you can also find Wishlist topics related to notifications specifically.

Lastly, if nothing suggested so far is working for you, then you could look into third-party apps like Zedge for managing notification sounds. (I imagine there are others, and I’ve never used that one myself; I just know it’s one that some family members have used with good results.)

Thanks, but on the App Info/Notifications screen, there is only an ON/Off for “Allow Notifications” The different type of WyzeMessages is not listed, How do I disable auto updates for Wyze? Can I apply previous version?

Just for reference, here is the response from Wyze Support. Within the Wyze app, there is no longer the ability to select any outside notification sounds, other than the 3 or 4 they provide. I also have Zedge, and will do some more digging to see, but from within my App settings on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, I am currently unable to select a custom notification sound of my choosing. Note: the “customizeable notification sound options” they mention, are these: 1) your current System Default sound, 2) Wyze Sound 1, 3) Wyze Sound 2, and 4) Wyze Sound 3. It makes no sense why they would take this feature away.

"We totally apologize for the inconvenience that you encountered with the update of the Wyze App notification. We made changes to the notification sound in the Wyze app to enhance user experience. Here are the key reasons for the change:

  • Distinct Notification Sound: The notification sound for Wyze notifications was changed to be different from standard phone notification tones. This helps users easily identify notifications from the Wyze app.

  • Customization Options: We introduced the ability to customize the notification sound in the Wyze app, allowing users to choose from different Wyze Sound options. This feature is available for both Android and iOS devices.

  • Improved User Experience: By offering unique notification sounds, users can better manage and prioritize their notifications.

If you wish to customize your notification sound, you can do so by navigating to the Account tab in the Wyze app, then selecting Notifications > Push Notifications > Notification Sound .

These updates are part of our ongoing efforts to improve user experience. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Furthermore, the changes for sound notification are for Wyze app alone, you may still able to change the volume of the notification from your phone.

And, this was their response to my expression of disappointment in their change to the notification sounds.

"We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced due to recent changes in our sound notification service. We understand how important these notifications are to you, and we are truly sorry for any disappointment this may have caused.

They removed these options from the App Info screen.

Correct, that’s my big complaint and frustration! I relied on being able to select a notification sound that would get my attention no matter what environment I was in or whether I was asleep. The current sound options do not afford that and I dislike it tremendously.

Agree, I used a Camera Shutter sound for ONLY this app!
Not sure if anyone else did, but I added to Wish List. They have to approve it before you can vote on it.

Oh, I’m glad you did! I’ll vote on it as soon as it’s approved! I had a loud doorbell sound set for my alert, which, obviously, I don’t use for any other app.

Is there a way to go back to previous version of WYZE app that this worked?
I have disabled the Auto update for WYZE for now.

In the screenshots you shared in a later post, you appear to be showing Android (what looks like Samsung’s variant) settings for the Messages app, not the Wyze app.

You can navigate to the Wyze app’s listing in Google Play Store, tap the vertical ellipsis () in the upper-right, and then deselect/uncheck Enable auto update.

You can try downloading and installing a previous version from a site like APKMirror or APKPure. Apparently a number of Android users dissatisfied with the v3 Wyze app are doing this.

I think MovieNut was just demonstrating what’s now missing in the Wyze app notification settings menu.

Correct Monica

That’s disappointing, and it affirms my decision to stay away from Samsung’s mobile devices. I don’t like the way they modify Android.

How were you able to set your custom Wyze notification sound before? Was that via Zedge? I’d expect any notifications settings modified at the Android OS level (vs. within an individual app from the app’s own internal settings) to override what the app does, because that’s been my experience with setting custom sounds for other apps.

Would it be possible to see screenshots with this missing information for comparison? I don’t have a current Samsung device, so I can’t replicate this experience for myself.

I will be away for awhile this afternoon.

Prior to this update, I was able to change the notification sound the same way MovieNut demonstrated in his previous screenshots showing the Messenger settings.

@MovieNut, thank you for sharing that! That gives me a better visual understanding, because it’s not at all what I see on a Pixel with stock Android 13.

@monica_kraus, thank you for explaining that! I can see what you mean given this new information.

Since I can’t replicate this experience, I wonder if another Samsung user like @ssummerlin might be able to provide some useful input.

I’m running custom notification sounds using Wyze app for Android version 3.1.0 (564) under Android versions 10-14. Can you scroll down to Notification categories?
