Wyze Cam v2 unresponsive after firmware upgrade

@phreebsd - you are likely in the same boat as me: I fear this is planned obsolescence, so I expect the remainder of my/your v2’s will die in the subsequent firmware upgrades. Although @WyzeBaohua seemed interested in fixing it, their latest email suggests that this is very old equipment, Wyze is not interested in fixing anything.

So - the “buyer beware” principle reins. Anything older than 2 years (i.e. immediately after the warranty expires) must die.

Hi FrauSchlau

Could you share the phrasing?

I need to explain that I bought two of these Pan v2 cameras. One from WYZE directly and the other from Amazon. The one from WYZE worked beautifully UNTIL the latest required firmware update. After that, it ceased working completely and would not enter setup mode so I could not even TRY to reset it and install it again. The one from Amazon would not even enter setup mode or factory reset. I contacted WYZE. They said it is a KNOWN ISSUE. They are sending me a free replacement for my order from them and told me to return the one purchased from Amazon directly to Amazon. As an aside, I also had one WYZE plug out of four repeatedly fail to update the firmware. I’ve tried everything! It’s another “known issue” on some of the plugs!

Attached is a screenshot of my video. This pink comes and goes after I did a reset of my camera after it was made unresponsive after the firmware update.
Another issue. Two my cameras had the legacy subscription for motion video. After I had to do the reset to get the cameras back it gave me a free trial of camplus. How do I get these 2 cameras back to the legacy subscription that I had before the firmware update made the cameras unresponsive!
Thanks, SteveV.

So, these cameras are affordable up front, but the cost of replacing them every other firmware update may not be worth it in the end. Also, honestly I wouldn’t dread having to replace them so much as having to physically change them out. Some of them are not in easy reach outside my house, and having to get up there to fix firmware problems, and do all that stuff is not appealing to me at all.

Installed 4.9.9.1472 on two of my Cam V2. Older one upgraded ok on the app, Newer wyze Cam Black upgrade on the app failed and was never able to connect after that. A solid yellow light was always on, this update bricked my V2 Cam. I tried factory reset and reinstalling many older firmware, but even with older firmware installed the solid yellow light was on and nothing worked.

My problem has nothing to do with password length as it is shorter than 20 chars.

So - same issue. With me - 3 out of 10 v2’s died.
To me, it almost looks like “accelerated planned obsolescence” - an amazing way to force users to buy more equipment. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

My 2 cameras that were working fine on the new firmware just went offline yesterday. That makes 4/4 of my V2s with the issue. Downgrade fixed them as well.

Hi All,

My Wyzecam V2 bricked as well. I get a solid yellow light, however, the Set Up button is not responsive(doesnt work). I tried do a factory reset(without a SD card) and then tried to flash the earlier firmware given here manually. However, none of these work. Even tried with a 16GB SD card with FAT32 format.

Any thoughts?

Would be nice to hear from Wyze. Clearly - quite a few people running into the same issue. So far, given the manufacturer’s response that can be summarized as “too bad so sad”, I have trouble believing this is NOT planned/forced obsolescence. :rage:

I’m patiently waiting for a fix. Mine will survive until it loses power…then it has to be reset manually and setup new, each time.

Same here. I have a bunch of cameras that I had to reset manually and now I’m waiting for a functioning new firmware to be released, hoping that the power won’t get interrupted before that happens.

Another unhappy camper here. I have over a dozen v2 cams to monitor a vacation property 125 miles away in the next state. I pushed out the firmware update download 4.9.9.1472 to all of cams remotely prior to driving up there last weekend. Several of the cams went dead immediately afterwards. Once I was at the location, I was able to get some of those working by rebooting, while a few others had to be re-setup and added back into the Wyze app. Fast-forward 5 days to today, gradually throughout this week one cam after the other has suddenly lost connectivity with an error #90. I won’t be heading up to that location for 5-6 months and fear I will soon lose complete cam visibility.

Any suggestions?

Welcome friend!

Like you, my v2 cams were bitten by the recent firmware updates.

Same here. A hard reboot ( via smart plug or physically yanking the cord for a few min ) would revive my v2 cams to normalcy for a few hours.

One question - are the cams truly completely unreachable, or do they just show up that way in the preview? Mine showed up as “offline” but worked relatively normally if I clicked on them anyhow. So basically all that was truly lost was the “live preview” feature. But many others have reported much worse.

If they are truly not working at all, many approaches have been suggested, and some have worked for some people, for some length of time.

Unfortunately, the two best fixes I have seen will require that 250 mile round trip, unless you have a good friend who is tech savvy living near the vacation home.

  1. Change your WiFi password to less than 21 characters and make them normal numbers or letters. Then reconfigure all the devices on your LAN to connect. Or create a guest LAN with a short password and put all your v2 cams on that.

  2. Manually flash your firmware back to 4.9.8.1002 - https://download.wyzecam.com/firmware/v2/demo_4.9.8.1002.zip (I chose this path)

  1. Would be to wait for Wyze to release a better firmware and hope that you can update your cams remotely.

I am very sorry that this is not happy news, but it is the straight scoop as I see it.

Hopefully someone smarter that I will have a better solution!

@sodcam,

Thank you for your input. My cam v2’s that went down over the past week show ‘this device is offline’ in the preview screen; when you click onto specific cams they very briefly attempt to connect but result in an error #90. The Wyze app reports the down cams as being on the buggy 4.9.9.1472 firmware. For most of them, they lost connectivity right after initially downloading the firmware. I restarted each and re-added them back into the app, and they lasted anywhere from one to five days before losing connection.

I will mention that the WIFI password at my remote property is 30+ alphanumeric characters (no special characters). While that never presented an issue in the past, it sounds as though the .1472 firmware may be having some trouble with it. It just seems odd that most of my cams there worked at least for a time after the firmware update downloaded. As of this evening, I have five remaining cams there on .1472 which have so far are still online (fingers crossed).

Thanks also for the tip regarding flashing back to 4.9.8.1002. I was able to successfully do this on two cams I had brought back home with me, one had the constant clicking and the other was ‘mute’ until I re-flashed it. Barring some miracle, my plan once I make it back to my remote property is to shorten my WIFI password and flash back all of my v2’s to the .1002 version of the firmware.

Very glad to hear that the manual flashing back helped out the two cams you had brought home! :+1: :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

Yes, the most frustrating part of this fiasco for me was that my cams also all worked fine for awhile after the firmware update. This lured me into updating more and more cams, until by the time they started failing, I had dug quite a hole to get out of. :rage:

Best I can gather, there’s something funky in the new firmware code that wigs the cam out when your router renews the DHCP lease for the cam’s IP number. The problem is worse with a long password, and also worse with certain batches of cameras (certain MAC address ranges) - so different people get different issues at different times based on their different hardware. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

So far .1002 is still working for my hardware mix, so I’m gonna hold onto it like grim death until I see about a month’s worth of great reviews here. There are no new features I need all that bad right now…!

I just attempted the firmware update on my Wyze pan cam last night- it is dead - solid yellow light with no rhythmic clicking. Contacted support live shat and the first one had no idea - just ended the chat after I did the power cycle, use a different wyze cam original USB plug from another camera that is working and the holding the re-set button for 10 seconds. I re-started the chat but again no help. I use the camera in my elderly mom’s room to monitor her at night - she has advanced cancer and often got asthma attacks at night. Now I am stuck with nothing. Their support is not well-trained. Since I bought this camera in 2021 earlier in the year I am out of warranty. Any help on this is appreciated. I have 4 other cameras that I am afraid to update the firmware. Also it stops recording sounds even if the setting was to correctly set to record. There are so many bugs with this camera I am thinking of moving to another company. I heard simplisafe is not unstable like this. Anyone has a better experience with another company let me know. Thanks

@plafitness Sorry for the trouble. Could you please PM me the MAC of the bricked camera? I can help you trying to recover it. Thanks!

@WyzeBaohua - this is what you asked me to do. I sent you the details via PM, you first offered replacements and requested that I send the dead/bricked v2’s back to Wyze. When I asked why tech support had not offered me this solution, you replied claiming that you had misread my note and thought I and everyone else in this thread is discussing v3’s. You wrote that v2’s were very old equipment.

And now you are asking @plafitness the same. Will you offer them a solution or will you claim that you thought we all were discussing v3’s?

Sure - How do I PM you? I don’t see a link here[quote=“WyzeBaohua, post:78, topic:243696, full:true”]
