Other than all the other replies on the subject above, here is something I wrote up about longer runs:

So you need to run a long USB power cord to power a camera or device. Here are some things you should be aware of. First, the longer a cable gets, the lower the voltage that will be available at the end of the cable. At some point, the voltage will be too low for the device.
