Wyze App Crashed TP-Link Wifi

Like the Title says, every time I open up my app, my Wyze devices loose connection to the WiFi,
The Wyze Light switches start to blink and the cameras show offline for a period of about 5 to 10 minutes. Most re connect after that.

All this happens fairly consistently, I thought it was due to my Internet service provider and upgraded to Fiber internet.
That did not solve the problem :frowning:
I then upgraded to a brand new TP-Link XE75 Pro Wifi Routers, again that did not solve the problem :frowning:

Im at a loos as to how to resolve this issue.

Please note this is a fairly large install with about 20+ Cameras and 30+ Light Switches

@fernando1,

A bit more info.

What phone are you on. IOS or android.?

What version of the app are you on. 2x or 3x?

Are all 20 cameras trying to load when you open the app.

20 cameras at once along with the 30 lights/plugs is probably overloading your 2.4gHz wifi band.

Its on IOS (Both Phone and Ipad)
app 3.3.0(6)
My ā€œFavoriteā€ Devices on the app about 30 of them do try and load and check statusā€¦
I just counted and have have about 60 Wyze Devices on the IoT 2.4 network (6G is disabled)

I think this might be helpful information, and I wonder what your experience would be if you navigated to  Account āžœ App Settings and toggled Autoplay Video Live Streams to (OFF). If itā€™s on, then Iā€™d try that, exit the app, and then re-launch the app to see what happens.

@fernando1,

If you go to Accounts > App Settings which screen do you see

Auto play video ā€œonā€

or

Auto play video off.

If it is the first screenshot, autoplay on, and all 20 cameras are in your ā€œfavoritesā€ then the app is trying to load and stream 20 cameras at once (on android you have to scrool past the camera, not sure with ios).

If so try changing to autoplay video ā€œoffā€. What happens when you look at your favorites?

This is definitely weird though because I have around 50+ cameras and many other Wyze devices like smart bulbs, sensor hub, air purifiers and many other things (though no switches active right now), I am currently using about 3TB of data per month, most of it from my Wyze cameras, and my Wyze devices are not crashing my WiFi and havenā€™t done that with my last 4 routers Iā€™ve used.

But the above correlation is interesting. It sounds to me like the router is being overloaded. How many router nodes do you have setup to handle the load? Are you using just one or a mesh of several?

I would definitely follow the above comments about turning off autoplay and instead put your cameras into groups for different areas of the property. I wonder if that will help since it seems to only crash when you load the app.

I will try those settings , and see what happens. But I do find it troubling that I would be overloading it this way.
This besides 2 computers doing nothing and 1 tv on the network so the bulk of the traffic is Wyze devices.
There were 3 nodes on wired backhaul, I removed one to see if that helped. I even tried forcing endpoints to stick to their closest node.

My Settings were set to load the video automatically and card style was comfortable. all settings I do wish to use

@fernando1,

If I can give you some ideas.

The favorites can have grouped and non-grouped cameras on the same page. I have all important cameras in favorites - - non autoplay video. I also have the same 10 cameras in a group. I make a decision upon opening the app do I want to see one camera or all the cameras. From the time I click on a single camera it takes 3 seconds to show live video. From the group it takes less than 30 seconds to bring up all cameras (including 2 WBCPā€™s). I seldom use events as when my phone barks wyze I just click on the camera group and I know within 30 seconds if there is an issue.

Following is a screenshot of my ā€œFavoritesā€.

I would start with a small group. Maybe 5 cameras in the group. I f that runs flawless for a day or two add another couple of cameras. Do this until things get flakey. Bouncing balls, no connection, error codes etc.

Make sure you run a test for a couple of days. Environmental factors can effect wifi performance.

Once you determine how many simultaneous camera streams your network can support then you can explore how to segment your 20 cameras into separate groups.

Hope this helps.

I have those exact same routers and not experiencing the issue. So I would not believe that is the issue. I would turn off the auto stream as indicated above and see if that helps.

As @ronl4625 indicated, you can group cameras and make them part of your Favorites. I have also done that. The main important cameras remain visible on the Favorites tab while the others are grouped.

Maybe you said, but its was not clear to me. Were you already using TP-Link?

And separately, if you are using VPN, turn it off.

Thank you Ron and others for your great advice.
I have made the following changes:

-Set the cameras to not out stream
-Put the app in compact view
-created a group and favorite for the all the cameras

The results of these changes:

The App does not crash the WiFi on open and load.
I can click on the favorite cameras individually and they load one at a time

As Suspected when I click on the group that has ALL my cameras the first few load and as I scroll down the group to view them they eventually stop and fail to load.
When I click back out of the group all my devices are offline as it has crashed.

Good to know others have used my same WiFi router as well.

@fernando1,

Thatā€™s encouraging news. Now take all but 5 cams out of the group. Do they load properly?

Add cameras until you start seeing problems. Then back it off a camera or two.

Some interesting consistency in re creating the issue:

I changed the camera group to have 5 or 6 cameras that are NOT the Battery Cam Pro and Iā€™m able to select the group from my favorites and the cameras appear fairly quickly, as I scroll down they each start to load.
If I scroll up and down quickly and repeatedly two or three times and watch them try to load I see they eventually donā€™t load and when I go back to my main screen devices start to appear offline, effectively I crashed the network.

Another interesting point is that if I have even just a couple of Battery Cam Proā€™s in a group the crash happens right away.
I have noticed in the past the Battery Cam Pros take forever to load even when connected to power and without the battery save mode they load differently and are far more inconsistent.
I Purchased these in hopes of outdoor and solar with minimal success so I do have some indoors with Power

Strange that other have this same Router setup and not as sensitive to this traffic

@fernando1,

For the time being leave the WBCP out of the group. Try only putting 2 cams in the group. What weā€™re looking for is consistency. If 2-3 cams can run in the group scrolling up and down as you described see if you get consistency. A good test gives us a known starting point.

WBCP is a different beast. In best of conditions the WBCP takes 9-11 seconds to get a live stream, if not in a group. This is normal.

Is your XE75 running the latest firmware?

I have made sure there are no WBCP in the group,
Start with 3 Cams, lots of scrolling and up and down and the cameras load fine. The occasional extra few seconds here and there to update but no crash.

As I add cameras to that group up to 4 seems ok, on the 5th one start to see the issues.

I took a video of what happens once I add a 6th video
I can confirm, i am on the latest TP-Link Deco firmware.

@fernando1,

Now weā€™re getting some where.

Your able to stream 4 cameras at a time. I would sit on this for a day or so and make sure it stays stable.

I think there is more to be done but letā€™s wait a day or so.
