I haven’t voted because none of the options in the poll represent my sentiment, though I’d probably be closest to “would opt in for Cam Plus” (not Lite). I’m not a “wouldn’t opt in” but more of a “maybe”. My response would depend on the details:
- Would users have the ability to swipe away or otherwise dismiss third-party ads? I noticed the recent Wyze ad (which I’ve gotten sporadically for a week or so) prompting me to subscribe to Cam Plus was mildly annoying because it was completely covering the controls (filter, etc.) at the top of the Events screen, but my vexation abated when I discovered that I could swipe it away without tapping into a more detailed inducement.
- The third example image seems to be eating into the space where RECENT EVENTS would be, and I notice that this space already varies quite a bit depending on the screen geometry of whatever phone I happen to be using at the time, so would this ad here affect the user’s ability to scroll this portion of the UI? If the ads impede the use of the app in any way, then I think they’re a no-go.
- It’s good that example images show an “×” in the upper-right corner of each ad. Would this remove the ad completely and collapse that space so that it’s usable for other app features (as if the ad had never been there)? (The ad in the first example image doesn’t look terrible, as it appears that a user could scroll right by that to continue viewing the remaining items in the Favorites list, and this doesn’t seem significantly worse than Wyze’s own in-app prompts to a user to subscribe in order to eliminate 5-minute cooldown periods in event timelines.)
- How often/frequently would a user be able to opt in/out of an ad-supported plan? What’s the limit? Could a user have only a single opportunity to opt in or out? Would there be a situation like a monthly Cam Plus subscription where a user would opt in, see ads, and then if that person opted out would continue to see ads for the rest of the “billing” period until the ad-supported Cam Plus subscription lapsed? Would that user be able to opt into an ad-supported plan again at some point in the future?
Like others have said, clearly communicating how this might work in order to set realistic user expectations is vital, and I’d definitely want to have answers to questions like these before making a commitment. I’m definitely supportive of Wyze exploring additional revenue streams, especially if it allows them to allocate resources toward addressing longstanding issues that are important to large numbers of users, especially Wishlist items like Multiple Users' Permissions for Shared Users and those requesting expansion of Automations Triggers and Actions.
