I don’t necessarily mind certain kinds of ignorance. Some are terrible and some apply to all of us.

There are at least 3 kinds: Simple, Willful, & Complex.

Simple ignorance can be acceptable. Some people don’t know something because they haven’t been taught or exposed to it. We all have some of this. Often you don’t know what you don’t know, and that can be okay.

Willful ignorance is another beast all-together though, such as people choosing not to know something by avoiding it or rejecting it because they WANT to believe something else and avoid Cognitive Dissonance or any chance of going through a heartbreaking deconstruction event of their chosen worldview.

Complex Ignorance is being aware of your lack of knowledge in a particular area and making efforts to learn more, but still knowing you don’t have a complete understanding.

There are several subcategories of the above, unrecognized ignorance, or Narcissistic ignorance which is kind of a mix of simple ignorance and Willful ignorance. Someone who thinks or pretends they know everything, but they are often wrong a lot. This is usually founded in hardcore insecurities. Dunning-Kreugar effect is typically called out on these people.

So, Simple and Complex are reasonable forms or ignorance that EVERYONE has for sure. Willful ignorance is more of the “don’t know, don’t care” or “I think I know everything, but I really don’t.”

The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know, and still wonder about things that I don’t know that I don’t know.

Just musing today on the following words/topic and thought I’d share:

Maturity / Immaturity

(definitions/examples are not mine, but they are interesting)

  • Maturity: To be able to stick with a job until it’s finished; to do one’s duty without being supervised; to be able to carry money without spending it; and to be able to bear an injustice without wanting to get even.
  • Immaturity: Assuming that louder voices or force win arguments.
  • Maturity: Listening thoughtfully and recognizing that wisdom often speaks softly.
  • Immaturity: Complaining about circumstances without trying to change them.
  • Maturity: Accepting what you cannot change and working to improve what you can.

Tiered:

  • Immaturity = live today on the money you’ll earn tomorrow.
  • Maturity = delayed gratification: live today on the money you made yesterday.
  • Even better = the money you made last month, last year or 5 years ago.
  • Worst = living on someone else’s money (handouts, stealing, etc).

Note, the above are not my statements. Also, I do believe there are other variables to financial situations and the above may not apply in every case. For example, I know people with extreme health problems and severe medical debt that can make it hard to impossible for them to do much to change their financial situation and stay alive at the same time. In the same spirit there are also other outliers that may make some things not applicable to some people. Though as a general rule I try to avoid the “It’'s complicated” as an explanation, because in my experience (including for myself, personally), if your reasons are “complicated,” they’re almost certainly excuses…at least that has historically (though not always) been the case for me, so I try to remember and consider that and give myself as few “excuses” as I can.

What say you ol’ Froggy friend @peepeep (or others)? What do maturity and immaturity mean to you?

Interesting question and examples.

The capacity for ‘meaningful pause.’

Can and will do it: mature. Can’t or won’t do it: immature.

Not complicated.

Give one pause

Please.

I’m just glad to see :frog: posting here again, I guess because of some news this week?

I was thinking of this eight-year-old I gave pause to with a serious but playful question. To my surprise, he considered the question for a long moment and said, “I don’t know,” calmly and with some satisfaction. :astonished:

He had no basis for an opinion and he knew it!

“Serious” but immature. Senate confirmation hearings. (demoralizing)
“Immature” but serious. Some humor and satire. (invigorating)

entertain an idea (or question)

curiosity and omission

One seems open to infinite space while the other seems small and fearful.

Why not explore the whole truth?

What is the truth? Whole or part?
