I have a new V4 camera. If I watch playback from the SD card and try to record a clip I get the message “Recording failed with error: Recorded Empty File. Deleted”. This is happening on two android phones and a tablet.
I have the latest firmware, the latest app, and I’ve restarted the camera several times without any correction of the issue.
Any idea how to fix this?
edit: I should have mentioned I have two OG telephotos and two V3 cams that work fine and record from SD playback without issue. It’s just the V4 having this problem.
Corrrect, playback is fine and I can see multiple days of footage no problem. I just checked and “take photo” also works correctly. It’s just that I can’t record footage if I’m watching it from the SD card. I should have mentioned I have two V3 cameras and two OG telephotos that aren’t having this issue, just my new V4.
Odd. I’ve heard of issues recording from SD when there is a bad/corrupt spot in the video. Does it do it no matter where on the timeline you try to record or only a certain event you’re trying to grab?
Maybe try clearing the cache (in the app and/or in phone settings). Another thought is the v4 needs more bandwidth than those other two, maybe it isn’t able to get a steady clean stream to your phone on the available bandwidth.
I don’t have a v4 so maybe someone with one can confirm if this works for them or not.
I’m seeing exactly the same error. Unable to record from SD card; "Recording failed with error: Recorded Empty File. Deleted”.And only after the Wyze app 3.0 “upgrade” . And ONLY on my 3 V4 Cams. MY V3s are fine.
Update: I’ve tried deleting the cache and running a “forced stop” on the app. Still unable to record from the V4 SD cards.
I’ve cleared the cache but unfortunately no change. It doesn’t matter where on the timeline I try to record a clip, it always fails. I wonder if it’s a bug specifically with the V4.
For the record:
My MO is to record 7 day timelapses (1 minute intervals) on my wyze cams on a weekly basis, I download the timelapse file wirelessly and move them to my desktop PC where I can review them. If I see anything interesting (deer, moose, porcupines, bobcats etc.) I go back to the SD card files on the cameras and look for the appropriate time stamp and record the full motion to my tablet for transfer to my PC. Been doing this for at least three years starting with V3s, V3 Pros and finally V4s.
Everything has worked flawlessly…until the Wyze app 3.0 installed.
I have a Pixel 8a running Android 14/Wyze 3.0. It gives the error when trying to save recordings from V4s. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 running Android 14/Wyze 3.0. Same error. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 running Android 12/ Wyze 3.0. Same error.
But I also have an (ancient) Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 running Android 7 and Wyze app 2.50.5.449 and…and …wait for it…NO Errors! Huzzzah!. This Wyze App version continues to record and store files from V4s exactly as it should,
I’m not able to replicate this. I was able to save recordings from Cam v4 (current production firmware) playback in both app v3.0 (on Android 10) and v2.5x (on Android 13).
I think the app read/write permissions is a good thought but doesn’t make sense if the issue seems to affect only Cam v4s. It does seem like it’s related to the v3.0 app somehow, and I wonder if it’s affecting only certain app/firmware/Android variant combinations.
I’d suggest logging it and submitting follow-up tickets so that the developers have an idea of what they’re seeking in the logs and Support can track it as a known issue.
That is wild. I run timelapses repeatedly on my v4 without issue. I use the same 3.0 app and latest firmware on my cam. Three of my app devices are on Android 14 while one is Android 10.
We need a diagnostic tool to troubleshoot these issues.
It should ask you when you do each thing that requires a permission. On my older Pixel running Android 14 with the 3.0 app it has
Notifications
Photos and Videos
If you want to talk through the camera it needs Microphone (you can set this one to “while using the app”)
If you want to use the geofencing (automate rules based on where you are) it needs Location, and you’ll need to let that run all the time, not just while using the app. If asked, you’ll probably want to allow precise location.
Thanks - I Ihad all of these permssions ticked off before on all my newer tech. I also tried a re-install of the 3.0 app with no improvement in performance (for me anyway).
I encountered this as well today, August 20. This issue is specific to Wyze Cam v4 only and not the other Wyze Cams as others have already stated.
Although recording from the SD card doesn’t work, recording LIVE works. I’ve recorded a 34-sec video demo showing both cases (recording from SD card and recording LIVE) on my cell phone. However, I’m not sure how to upload this video demo together with this post.
There should be an “Upload” button in the editor when you’re creating a post:
If you don’t see it, then that may be a permissions issue with your Trust Level, and I don’t know the details there, but a Moderator can help. I also don’t know what the video upload limitations are.
Some users will post the video to a sharing site (YouTube, Google Photos, Imgur, etc.) and then just include a link rather than embedding/uploading video into the post itself.
