Sense Hub Power Adapter Issue

After about 2 years of continuous use, I noticed this morning that my Sense Hub was making a random high-frequency noise. It looked like it was coming from the Sense Hub speaker. I started investigating with the following observations:

  • Removing power stopped the noise.
  • Moving the power cable slightly had an effect on the noise.

I finally narrowed down the issue to the Sense Hub power adapter. For some reason, it’s generating high frequency fluctuations, probably in the power output. I will try to verify this with my multimeter but, without the proper equipment, I doubt it will be this obvious. In the mean time, I replaced the adapter with another one I had in hand (same specs - 5v 1000mA output) and the noise disappeared.

I am thus creating this post to keep a record of this event and let other users know about this issue that is likely to become more common.

Wyze: It is possible the power adapter provided with the Sense Hub may have a design issue that makes it become out of specs after less than 24 months.

Smart move. I would do this too if a power adapter was acting abnormally.

Certainly possible, though, I have only heard of 1 other people needing to replace a hub power adapter and cord to get things to function normally again, so rather than a design flaw, I’d suspect it’s just within the normal range of electronics wearing out. Sometimes things will last decades, sometimes only a year, even if they were both the same part manufactured at the same time. This is why electronics rarely have a warranty period longer than 1-2 years because all electronics have an expectation that a percentage of them will break down within a certain time frame. Those who offer longer warranties usually build the outlier stats into their price point to subsidize the cost. For example, Skull Candy has been known to offer lifetime warranties, even though they have a decent number of their units break down, but they make more sales by offering that, and not everyone takes advantage of it, etc. But it doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t also have a percentage of units that break down.

I think this is just one of the outliers. I’m glad you were careful though! Maybe someone at Wyze will want to check it out anyway. They have done so for other adapters from other devices that had a problem in the past.

Did they ever fix the hub bug where if the power goes out, the hub doesn’t auto-reconnect?

I would like to buy a hub someday to replace my old sense door connectors that were sun setted, but I don’t want any issues.

I think so. I haven’t had to restart my hub in months even after I restart my server, so I think that means they likely fixed it, but Wyze hasn’t officially announced it yet. I think They’ve been postponing the Fix-it-Friday stuff while they work on the App and new Subscription stuff as their current priority. I’m guessing they are trying to make sure that’s mostly resolved before their official anniversary in October.

I had my share of power outages in the last year and never had issues with the Hub reconnecting.

It does not seem to be an issue.

That is great news. Thanks. I will take it off my DO NOT BUY list.

Very good to know. Thanks.
