New V3 update at installation KILLED IT now solid red light of DEATH

Can’t believe this is still going on in 2024. Wyze literally killed a V3 camera that connected fine after being carefully stored for a year. End of installation of course mssg says update. Clicked and got sick after about 7 minutes of nothing then of course it’s update failed and solid red light. Can’t even believe I’ve sat with this for 2 hours plugging unplugging blah blah. No way I’m going back to 2020 and trying to extract files on a computer and blah blah to completely fail at a reflash again.

Yeah I’m scorned! It’s getting too much man, They can’t say I haven’t tried. An auto-update 100% killed a V2 and no one cares, Csr just said I could buy a cheaper refurbished one. This V3 was pristine perfect and connected/setup fine. I don’t care if it was put back for a year waiting for it’s perfect spot. How is it right to rip off like $35 by destroying a camera with their own instructions?? Well it’s not! And yes held the reset button 10 seconds and that doesn’t even work. What a joke that a their advice on solid red light it’s to update a cam that can’t connect. When they work they work but it can sure be a big racket no one cares about so rant over. But please spare me from how you’re all good and never had a problem post. Been at this too long and getting too old for that ridiculousness.

That line made me smile. I added an exclaimer for effect.

That would be me on the left feeling your pain.

Have you tried the manual firmware install procedure from their website?

Do you all think @Melmeister is here primarily to vent, ie, is he open/interested at all in technical assistance?

I’m leaning 90/10 vent/assistance.

Is this a private message?

Difficult to say. I am good with math, but gambling not so much.

Ask him. You can be subtle in your approach. My comment did not push him over the edge and was glad to see that.

Oh yeah I think coming here to vent is completely legitimate especially considering that solutions are seldom instant and sometimes non-existent, even after loads of good faith effort.

Yeah I was encouraged that he seems to have a sense of humor, maybe not as dark as mine but hell we can work it out.

Guys I’m still in the room. :joy: Even thinking about flashing firmware is excruciating from hours & hours trying and failing with other cams. Doubt I’ll get into it again with this V3 but thanks.

It isn’t bad.

The only thing I’m not sure on is they say to extract to a folder on the SD card (named the same thing as the file contained in the folder). However others have said you just put the file directly on the root of the SD card. Maybe someone who has done it can confirm.

If the latest firmware doesn’t work, try one from maybe halfway between when your cam was received and now. Maybe the big jump in firmware is just too much for it to handle at once. But I’d think the latest would work via the SD recovery process as it isn’t really trying to “upgrade” it at that point, just totally overwriting it.

I wouldn’t spend hours on it, but it sounds like the cam is easily accessible/not installed yet, it is worth a shot or two.

Ok dave27, if I do it I might start with one earlier this year. It could take an hour just to find the hardware, wait 15min for an old computer to boot up and not the fastest with moving files around in root directories.

Unfortunately with the loads and loads of advice out there I believed one that said to delete a solid red light cam from the app. I’m afraid the update killed it and deleting from app buried it. Of course next thing I read was never delete from app.
It’s still plugged in and clicks now and then, ugh. Been through similar enough to know it’s hopeless other than try redoing firmware but right now I’d just rather catch corona alpha, beta, delta AND omicron.

With the exception of one of the old outdoor cams that apparently can brick the cam if you delete from the app, it should not matter/hurt anything to delete it from the app.

The fact that it is clicking is a good thing, though at this point I’d unplug it and let it sit until you’re ready to try the firmware thing (if you decide to go that way).

That’s good news I’ve never heard before. Well she’s unplugged and might take a look at uploading the firmware someday. Should be a simpler/mobile/bluetooth process by now imo. Thx.

For the most part it is simple OTA updates 99% of the time. But sometimes something goes wrong and that’s why they have the “recovery” process. It doesn’t always work but it is worth a try. Even the cams like the OG that say they don’t support it, actually do, you just have to get the file from wyze support. But I believe all yours have the files right on their site.

I’m hopeful that it will work for you since it was a firmware update that bricked it and not a power surge or the camera just randomly stopped working.

Another thought, maybe it was coincidence that the included power adapter died (often if something is going to die, it is right away or after a long time). Try plugging it into any USB charger or outlet that puts out at least 1000ma of power (if I’m recalling the v3 requirements correctly, you can confirm by looking at the plug that was included - use a magnifying glass unless you have super vision). Or if you have a 2 or 2.4 amp one, that’s plenty, give it a try.

Well that’s true, used to have a ton on this side of my house till neighbors filled in a pool. Didn’t mind listening to them at night. Croak away lol.

It’s been in a Samsung ultra fast charger several times. Same thing as outlet, solid red light, clicks occasionally. I was talking about flashing the firmware more conveniently not the ota updates. Surprisingly those work most the time, unlike the early days when it felt like walking into pure purgatory to click on update. Took a couple days to get up the nerve. Didn’t really matter ultimately if you were too scared, they started homicidal auto updates to help ya along.
