At 3:30 am EST all the Wyze color bulbs in the house came on on bright white. Would not respond to Alexa or phone app and this morning still will not respond. Did anyone else have a similar event recently? Did Wyze make another software update in an attempt to fix the bulb issue and make this situation worse? I had previously removed all 8 of my white bulbs because they stopped responding about a month ago and after many email conversations with Wyze support, just gave up.
After my white bulb issue, I went with Kasa. Still like my Wyze cams.
I didn’t experience that, BUT if there was a power outage or even a fluctuation the bulbs will come on after power is restored if you have your settings set to do that. In the settings you can choose to ‘retain previous state’ so if they were off when the power surged or went out they’ll remain off when it’s restored.
I too am so disappointed with Wyze. I was supportive of their start up and have 27 devices including bulbs and plugs. After the last update my older bulbs quite responding although they were connected. After numerous email communications with Waze including sending logs and data, I received a sorry we cannot help because the bulbs are out of warranty. The fact that 5 bulbs all stopped working in the same way on the same day after an update should seems more than coincidental. Very very disappointed and will likely slowly transitions to another brand.

I too am beyond frustrated. I am contemplating changing all my bulbs to another brand. Any recommendations or incidents (positive or negative) to help me decide? Thanks

Kasa.
Still like my Wyze cams, but Kasa was a good bulb replacement. I don’t use the app since voice control works very well.
@alicerandolph, what issues are you having with your bulbs? I’ve got some of the original white bulbs as well as the newer ones. Maybe I can help with trouble shooting your issue?
I found your other post, don’t worry about re explaining here. I’ve responded there. Hope we can get it figured out!
There is a known issue with the 2019 white bulbs that @WyzeDesmond and @WyzeJasonJ were looking into. I believe the issue was re-adding the bulbs or moving them to a new network. I encountered the same issue.
I think you are using Google if I’m not mistaken. Do you have to say “Hey Google, lights on” or something similar? I find Alexa slow in turning the lights on, so I still flip a switch, find it much faster
Not trying to be devil’s advocate, but how long should a smart bulb last in your opinion?
The worst is the Alexa “skills” where you have to say “Alexa, Tell LG to start the washer” or whatever. Some of the smart bulbs are like this too, you basically have to try and figure out which things have “native” alexa support and which use a skill.
The only use I’ve found for smart bulbs is when it is in a corner and not connected to a switch, they are useful for some people in that scenario, or for outdoor lights that you want on a “timer”.
Though I always laugh when I see someone’s outdoor bulb flashing on and off in the “wifi lost” mode. Tempted to figure out which one they’re using and take it over
Well, the average lifespan of most smart bulbs NOW is supposed to be around 25,000hrs…but a few years ago the average was around 15,000hrs.
So, even at the old lower average of 15,000hrs, if you use it 8 hours a day it should last over 5 years. If you use it 4 hours a day it should last for 10 years.
Note that most Smart bulbs are technically ALWAYS used and ALWAYS ON from a certain perspective since even when “off” they stay connected to WiFi, etc…but the reason the average is based on when the light itself is on is because it takes into account heat management and quality of the components…but a lot of these things are variables worth considering.
So it certainly depends on a lot of different variables, but I think 5ish plus years is a reasonable expectation, and Wyze gives longer warranties on their bulbs than the rest of their products. I would expect a lot of Wyze V1 Bulbs that get normal use to start dying out now that they’ve been out for more than 5 years.
That’s the lifespan of the LEDs and the driver for them. The lifespan of the cheap little wifi SOC, especially if upside down and/or in an enclosed fixture and thus building up more heat, well that’s anyone’s guess.
That is exactly how I use mine. The outdoor ones are on dusk/dawn schedule and some indoor ones on away mode when I am away.
Never experienced that with my Kasa’s.
Yeah, I have three upside down and two of them in enclosures. Will see how long they’ll last.
As @dave27 mentioned above, that is for the LED components, I was wondering how long smart bulb should last taking into consideration that you are not supposed to have them in an enclosure or outdoors.
I’m willing to bet the ones I’ve seen are using their ISP supplied router (yet to see one with decent wifi coverage) and/or bought the home depot brand smart bulbs.
I had a couple of the very first wyze white bulbs (when they were pre-order) go out within the last 12 months or so… And I guarantee it’s because they’re in some vintage 70’s era Swag lights in my living room that I love and refuse to get rid of. They’re so old they have that gold chain around the cord and 2 prongs.
. Got them for 5 bucks on Offer Up a number of years ago… Maybe around 14-15 ish years? I know it was after I bought my house in 2009.
Please excuse the cobwebs that I just now noticed.
And my Bulb that’s in my front porch light fixture is still going strong, bought at the same time.
Now that we’re at the point where people have been using LED bulbs for like 5-7 years, it seems the driver fails before the LEDs do, which isn’t that surprising. The bulb will start flickering or flashing, usually around once per second as it is now getting semi- or full- AC power instead of DC. So with smart bulbs you’ve got a couple failure points to contend with.
So five years should be more or less a norm I guess. Not o shabby.
Seems like a reasonable average expectation. But I would expect cheap HD brand (commercial electric, etc) probably to fail sooner than something like Phillips Hue. But who knows, probably all made on the same assembly line.
10 years.
If used for 1 hour per day
