Intensity of light strip weakens (especially red!) when connected to app?

When I plug in a new light strip all of the colors including red are deep and intense. The minute I connect to the app and uggrade the strip device, the red weakens (not brightness but intensit) and appears washed out. What’s happening here???

In addition, if I disconnect from the app and turn the strip on manually, it still remains with weakened colors. I have 8 strips and they are all doing this.

The deeper red strip is fresh out of the box and no update or connection to the app.
The lighter red is the same color choice after update and connection to app

(See pics that follow)

Out of the box strip - no connection to the app and no update Red is deep and intense.

Strip has been connected to the app and updated. Red has washed out to a more rosey color - no longer deep and intense.

Welcome to the Forum, @ikhayastudios!

I get the sense that you’re describing effects of firmware updates that have been released since the introduction of the Light Strip. When I read through the firmware changes, I see a couple of things that might explain what you’re observing:

1.1.1.142 (April 18, 2022)

  • Improved color calibration

1.1.1.126 (February 14, 2022)

  • Improved color accuracy

It seems like when it comes to the color output of your Light Strips, you and Wyze differ on your concept of “Improved”.

I’m not aware of any way around this at present aside from contacting Support to request a replacement. Even then, I suspect that once you connect a replacement Light Strip to the Wyze app it will probably force you to do a firmware update. (I’m just going from memory here, because I permanently installed Light Strips a couple of years ago, and I don’t recall if that was something I could opt out of.) I’d be interested to see if anyone else has better ideas of what’s happening here and/or how to deal with it.

In the meantime, if you could go back and add some text to your posts with photos, then I think that could be helpful in letting other community members know specifically which are the “fresh out of the box” before photos and which are the “connection to app” after photos.

Hi Crease. I did describe the pics in the response above them but I went ahead and captioned them thanks.

Yeah this is definitely not an improvement though and I can’t imagine anyone would think it is or that an update would be to remove the intensity of a color. I can’t help but think the app isn’t triggering the full on color. I have the circle full on at the farthest edge of the red on the color wheel, but it seems like the strip is reading it as the circle being further up in the wheel towards the middle. I don’t know. All I know is I have 8 of these strips installed in the studio and it’s going to be a major (and infuriating) undertaking if I have to remove and replace them.

The red the strip should be reflecting (but aren’t)

The “red” the strip actually seems to be reflecting.

I see that, and I think the text descriptions will be helpful to others who read this topic. Thank you for taking the time to do that!

I also see what you mean about the color difference, and I’m inclined to agree with you. I don’t know anything about the reasoning that went into the previous firmware changes or if Wyze would consider additional tweaks in the future, but maybe one of the @Mavens could provide some insight. Since you already have the Light Strips installed, I think any change that would have the effect on color output that you’re seeking would likely have to come in the form of another firmware update from Wyze, possibly initiated by a Wishlist request. In a quick search, I’m not finding a relevant existing topic, so maybe someone else will have an idea of where to include your comments.

I would think the color codes would be the standard. Too bad you cannot type in a hex value for the red you want.

Yeah, those things have been requested for Bulb Color in at least a couple of Wishlist items:

I think it’d be cool if they did this for all of the colored lighting products.

I should have realized that.

I currently use my voice to say “red” , “Bright Red”, “fire-engine red”, but a code would be more definitive and exact. Thumb wheels are difficult to select the correct color each time.

Yeah, I’m not really a fan of the Wyze control (and Google Home’s is similar; I preferred the earlier color palette with names) for color. If I create a Wyze Rule (Automation) for a Bulb Color or Light Strip and select a color selection or Blink action, I have to use that funky control and hope that I touch my finger to the right spot, but then when I look at that step in the Rule the Wyze app actually shows me the RGB hexadecimal color code for my selection. It’d be cool if you could single-tap and have a pop-up that shows the RGB code for the spot you tapped so that you can either confirm the code then or directly edit the code if you want to make a specific change.

Usually if I want a specific color or color temperature, though, I just ask a smart speaker. I found a list of some color names in the Wyze Help Center that might be helpful.

Thanks for all the responses. In the end this is all really disappointing. BTW, I have heard no one else complaining of this issue; I can’t be the only one (?). The response I got from tech support (after a soul-less AI message instructing me to go through all of the troubleshooting processes I’d already indicated I had done), was basically, we’ll pass this on to the coders (who are off-line and will not respond) and maybe they will fix this with an update so watch for future updates.

I sent back a rather nasty-gram basically indicating I have installed many of these strips as part of the lighting design for my business - a new recording studio - which is scheduled to open in Sept. But now after all the installation time and $ spent, I have to delay the opening since their solution is for me to sit back and wait for, I dunno 1, 3, 6, 12 months for a firmware update that “maybe” will fix the issue before I can open? Pffft… I’m ripping it all out, choosing a another company’s product (already bought and tested for color accuracy and app dependability), and will make sure to influence others to avoid the purchase mistakes I have made with this product.
