Installing WYZE Cam outside - one approach

That’s good idea. I need to run extra Hotwire to a new box just for WiFi items outside.

Outside temps 90 degrees plus for the past few days, and no issues. Waiting for it to cool down to put protective braid over the wire and seal the hole. I also plugged the power adapter into a smart plug module so I can remotely power cycle it if needed

Did you route the power cord to the interior of your garage or to the outdoor lamp next to the camera?

I ran power from the attic to the underside of the eaves of the roof

Interior of garage. Thought about the tapping into the light but decided against it. Got a 20 foot USB cable from Amazon. Cable goes thru the hole, back up over the closed door, all the way to the left (held in place with nailed clips) where there is a convenience outlet. I used that.

Looks like a pretty good idea, they should just make a weather proof version though.

Have you posted that on Thiniverse yet  ? I’d like to try printing a couple of those.

How do you find night vision works with the plastic ?
I’ve always found glass / plastic in front of the camera really troublesome for night vision. If you have a screenshot you can share when used with night vision it would be appreciated!

Using a smart plug adapter for remote power cycling is an absolutely wonderful idea! Would you mind sharing with the group the product that you used or a link or it can be purchased? Thank you

Certainly. My “go-to” smart plug is the TP-Link Kasa HS103 “Smart Plug Mini”. They are awesome, and no hub required. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079B7SHD8/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?pd_rd_i=B07B8W2KHZ&pd_rd_w=0OWON&pf_rd_p=8a8f3917-7900-4ce8-ad90-adf0d53c0985&pd_rd_wg=l8mpG&pf_rd_r=786B38SPM6528V1YS48B&pd_rd_r=4eff48cc-9dc2-11e9-af99-f7a03486ec91&th=1

However, in this case, since the smart plug and the camera are out in the garage, and both Wi-Fi, I was worried that if there was a WiFi issue, then I could not access either one remotely. So in this case, I used an Insteon On/Off module https://www.amazon.com/Insteon-Dual-Mesh-Technology-Unbeatable-Reliability/dp/B00G5R6S9O/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3SRUZM51OSB8G&keywords=insteon+on+off+module&qid=1562179519&s=hi&sprefix=insteon+on%2Ctools%2C127&sr=1-1

Which requires an Insteon hub:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VG5DB86/ref=hsx_sh_dp_dp_bdg2_dsk

The reason I went this way, was that the Insteon system uses dual-band RF and Powerline, which would make it impervious to WiFi issues. (I also have Insteon plugs on my WiFi routers and other WiFi cameras to power cycle them if needed). The Insteon Hub itself is Ethernet wired to the main router,

But overall I like TP-Link Kasa products better. They just have a single-point-of failure risk if the plug and device it is controlling are both on the same WiFi.

I hope this helps.

rgnet5, can you activate the TP-Link Kasa HS103 “Smart Plug Mini” and Insteon On/Off module remotely? That is, when you’re away from home?

Absolutely!

Know this is a reply to a slightly old post. I don’t know how you were powering the camera, but if it was battery, be aware that battery performance drops dramatically in response to cold. That might explain the issues.

I appreciate your input, but no batteries, I’ve been using the power supply and cable provided with the camera.
Update: I have moved 2 of 4 back outside. One on the north side of the house and one on the south side of the house, I’m still using the silicone Frienda protective covers and I’m pleased to report there’s been no issues whatsoever to date.

I live in Calgary,Ab, I’ve got a V2 Cam mounted just on the hand rail of our front porch - has seen snow and rain and is still chugging along. This past winter we’ve had some bad snow storms and was worried I’d pooched it, I was wrong - Cam was covered with ice at one point I knocked it off and it went about its way still…I ended up making a Red solo cup ‘hat’ for it (picture to follow)

Nice installation. Camera, camera enclosure, infrared illuminator and motion sensor with a seal-tight electrical hookup.
