Don't buy wyse!

Really? I am very happy with my Wyze cameras. I just purchased a few more for my mother-in-law’s place in FL. Can’t beat the features for price. The latest update detects “persons” again and rtsp is working fine for me. I also own a Hikvision camera and it does a good job but I’ll probably replace it with a Wyze outdoor camera once it is available. Please go purchase something that satisfies you, maybe someone will take the Wyze cams off your hands.

RTSP stands for real time streaming protocol.

When we’re out and about doing errands I can check the live view of our Wyze camera which is located in our living room, no problem. Clearly, that is real time streaming. Maybe the other posters are talking about a wanted add-on feature to allow streaming to other locations or to their personal DVR (digital video recorder).

If the cat wakes up at home and starts playing around my phone receives an alert and I can view the 10 or 12 second video clip of that event, no problem.

I would say the ability to stream to my phone and the ability to receive alerts and view the event are very satisfactory for the $20 cost, wouldn’t you?

You are correct. RTSP allows the user to use existing DVR software and to record to their own storage. Relying on WYZE servers has proven to be hit and miss.
WYZE is good enough for me but there have been several occasions when the Event clips are not available.

Hey everyone, I figure it’s time to come out of the shadows and put in my two bits for what it’s worth. When I was researching WYZE, before making an initial purchase last fall, I made my decision based on knowledge of what I was getting myself into, what I would consider to be a fairly new start up company. Started off with a $50 package which included a couple lightbulbs a camera and also a sense kit for switches and such. I realized upfront I would be getting what I was paying for, but never did get the impression I was purchasing surveillance level hardware, nor did I see anything in the WYZE information claiming that they were a surveillance company. I had previously priced out the equipment I would have needed should security and surveillance been my top concern, but they were always cost prohibitive up in the thousands of dollars. I had previously priced out the equipment I would have needed had security and surveillance been my top concern, but they were always cost prohibitive and up in the thousands of dollars. The WYZE set up was pretty straightforward with about a 1 week learning curve since this whole concept is new to me. Upon my initial purchase I considered this venture as more of a new hobby for me, and since WYZE was a fairly young company, there would be a few bumps along the way. As it turned out, there weren’t as many speed bumps as I originally anticipated, and I started to really understand the smart home concept. I now have six cameras to view the perimeter of my home, and one PAN camera inside the house that I am using IFTTT to activate and deactivate as I leave and return home, I don’t really like the idea of being recorded while we’re home. Everything is functioning as expected, and as with any technology no matter how much you pay, every now and then there’s a hiccup but I work through it and carry on. A few months ago I had two of the contact switches go bad on me, and WYZE sent me two new replacements within about one week, but did not request I sent the old ones back so that made it really simple process. About a month after the virus hit, I noticed WYZE had thermometers on their site as a service to their customers, and since I could not find our digital thermometer I went ahead and ordered one. About a week after I ordered it I found our digital thermometer and contacted WYZE to cancel my order. Unfortunately, my request was a bit untimely and the thermometer was in the process of being packaged and shipped. Weird thing was, it didn’t ship for about a week after they contacted me to let me know that it was in the process of shipping, so I do agree that WYZE needs to fine time their shipping process a little bit more precisely. They ended up emailing me a prepaid return label so when the package arrived I slap the label on it sent right back, refund appeared on my credit card in a little bit over a week. I certainly don’t expect perfection from anyone, just good customer satisfaction, and they certainly met me at that level. As for them carrying “outside products” that they do not manufacture, it’s called diversification. That is the way businesses keep the cash flow during hard times, has been the American way as far as I can remember. It also gave WYZE a status as a “Necessary Business” during the virus. It was a smart decision by WYZE to carry “Necessary Products”, thus stay in operation to further support our WYZE products, keep from laying off employees, and stay afloat until things recover. I am not a WYZE fan boy, just speaking the truth the way I see it. Thank you WYZE for continuing to improve upon your products, making wise business decisions, and setting the kind of business model that others could learn from. Thanks everyone for letting me participate! By the way my first computer back in the day had MS-DOS 5.0, nothing graphical, and I must say I kind of miss those days.

Why don’t you just not buy it and go somewhere else. I have been using my wyze cameras for 2 years now and while they’ve lost features due to other partners for $20 you can’t beat it. You’re preaching to the wrong choir. Entitlement at its finest pay $20 and expects A+ all around.

I have multiple Wyze devices attached to my network and they all work flawlessly. Occasionally we have a power outage, but afterwards all the Wyze devices make their way back to the network. There was a point when I had issues with reliable Wyze connectivity. I did a factory reset of my modem/router and that solved the Wyze problem, extended the radius of my router by about 100%, and greatly increased the speed of my internet connection. I have no complaints

IT’S A TWENTY DOLLAR CAMERA! I’ve got three of them, 2 in third party outdoor enclosures, one of which is currently enduring 100+ degree temperatures in Phoenix. All work fine, as do the 4 Wyze plugs that I use for various devices. I’m not sure what you expect from a $20 camera, but geez, if you want 100% reliability there are plenty of more expensive options out there.
In fact, I have two Ring cameras on my house, bought before I started buying Wyze. One ring is solar powered, the other plugged in. The solar powered Ring ($200 when I purchased it, ten times the cost of a Wyze) frequently doesn’t connect, and needs multiple attempts to re-connect so I can view it. My Wyze cams work all the time.
I also have Simplisafe cameras tied into my security system. They work just fine, but they’re $100 each.
Would I use Wyze cams as a fail-safe, must work all the time, critical security function? No. But for $20-25 each, they’re a hell of a bargain and work pretty well, exactly like I’d expect from a camera in that price range.
As for the thermometers, I appreciated that Wyze helped make them available. And for what it’s worth, I tried to by that exact same thermometer elsewhere, and at the time, Wyze was the cheapest option.

I’m kind of onboard with jbrooks69 in that I think WYZE is moving too fast. I think they need to stop and shore up their existing products as well as make them a little easier to use/understand for the uneducated. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get my !*&%$#@! sensors to connect an stay connected. I’ve got a couple of cameras down and I haven’t even bothered to report it because I know that I will be referenced back to the “How-to” help sections I’ve already looked at.

I live in a remote area that experiences some serious weather extremes so my cameras are primarily for keeping an eye out for damage while I’m gone which can be many months.

The security motion detector aspect of the cameras seems to vary wildly even when they are on the same sensitivity level.

I’m not going to get into a rant about this and just say to WYZE

“Take a Breath”

I agree.

I’m happy with all my Wyze purchases I mentioned in my original post. Thanks for explaining rtsp.

I’m not sure why this all started with a post to with subject line “don’t buy wyse”. That’s a bit harsh and misleading. So was the traffic banter or is someone really hating on wize (wyze).

I have told my tech friends for over two years now that wyze products are good and I feel the company is moving in the right direction. They all purchase wyze gear.

I only wish wyze had Private stock for sale or have an IPO.

Great going wyze team,
Curtis

I like the event clips and alerts. See my white lab snag some pizza and did treats. So busted!

I won’t be replacing any of mine if they die or getting any more.
the cameras arent bad, but the company has definitely lost its direction.

it’s now just a rebadger of cheap Chinese crap and not an innovator.

the outdoor cam specs had all the making of something good, same as the eufy outdoor cam.
1-year battery life, a local hub that could do 4 cameras.
obviously that deal fell thru and what we are going to get is a dodgy v2 that has been waterproofed.
i guess we will find our for sure in 5 days

I like my three Wyze v2 cameras also. I don’t plan on using them outside. I use them in windows looking out. Haven’t been interested in anything else. The low price and small size prompted me to buy them. They always work for me.

I hear you are frustrated. I have a diferent opinion. I bought the thermometer and mask from wyze, yes VERY expensive unlike the cameras…but I was happy they were at least for sale and from a company i trusted not some unknown on ebay. The cameras are good, especialy for the price point, there is still is no better alternative in the market. could they innovate more, could they reassure me more that their firmware on a Xiaomi hardware and is realy privacy proof, yes they could…but to date there is still is no better alternative for me. an happy customer so far.

I like them when they work.
90% of the time they do but I get too many ‘Clip not available’ messages.

What is that based on?

" … it’s now just a rebadger of cheap Chinese crap and not an innovator. "

May I ask, what was Wyze before that? Was the earlier model made in the USA from premium parts which they chose to sell at an ultra low price so they could lose money? Or, was it made in China or Taiwan with low-cost parts so that it can sell here for $20?

When was Wyze an innovator? Bringing to market a low-price 1080p indoor camera with motion-sensing and a memory card slot is not innovating anything other than undercutting the competition on price. Whilst that is admirable it probably does not qualify them as an innovator.

Please allow me to point out that that battery life is dependent on several factors, principal among them being how much it’s used. In front of a house with a lot of passing traffic which activates many recordings each day would surely reduce the expected battery life between charges to much less than a year. Extreme cold weather would also have an adverse affect on battery life. My point is that reality often tempers our expectations, thus we should take all performance claims with a pinch of salt.
