Automation/Shortcuts

So I set up my Cam Pan v3 with automation/shortcut that if I’m home, it turns off the camera, turns off motion detection and turns off notifications. When I’m away, all these items turn back on. It’s set for 1163 feet.

The problem is that if my wife is home, the camera remains on (presumably bec it is using my phone for gps). Other than having my wife add the app to her phone, is there a way to add a shortcut for her home/away status?

I am honestly not sure if there is a way to account for needing both of you to be gone before the cam turns on. Let me tag in the @mavens and see if they know of anything users have come up with to achieve something like that.

Currently from what I understand you having the app on your phone only, it is only reading your location so it only trigger an therefor It doesn’t understand your wife’s location at all. But In thinking about how I would go about doing this if I were in your position can I ask what devices you do use? Do you happen to have the Wyze hub and motion sensors? Without having the app directly on her phone sensing motion within the home would be the only real way to do it the downside is it would be dumb motion and if someone were to break in it would not know that it’s motion you would probably more than likely want recorded. You could always set up schedules if you guys have regular schedules, that would turn the cameras on and off at set times which will give you a roundabout idea of when they’re on and off and capture what you want, but outside of that there’s not very many options.

Have you noticed a change in battery life on your phone? I tried the “geofencing” option and turned it back off in under a day, was draining the phone and making it run hot.

I don’t think there is any way to account for what you’re looking for, even if you both had the app and were both logged in to the same account, I’m not sure the system would be smart enough to know that you want it to be “only when both phones are gone” type setup. You may need to just put shortcuts for the automations on the home screen of your phone so you can enable/disable manually. Saves battery life too.

Personally mine are always on and I do not have cams facing the interior of my house or any private areas. Personally I don’t think any internet connected cams like these should ever be facing anything private. The automation I have is to turn notifications on for my back stairs (the ones I usually use) when I know I’m going to be gone all day or for a few days, otherwise I leave them off since it would be annoying.

The problem is that the Wyze app doesn’t currently do multi-user Geofencing nor conditional operators for the automation rules.

You could do most of this through Google Home. It will allow location conditions based on whether everyone is away or anyone is home. But Wyze has only enabled power on and power off entities for Google Home to control. On the bright side, if the camera power is turned off, then obviously there are no notifications or motion to be detected anyway. Problem solved. This is probably the easiest solution for you and the one I would highly recommend. Install Google Home on the phone of everyone in your household, allow it to monitor your phone location automatically all the time, link your Wyze account to Google Home, then set up an automation to trigger turning on the power to the camera when you leave home with the condition that it only happens when EVERYONE is away from home. Then set up another automation to turn the power back off anytime ANY of you are home (you, or your wife).

There are alternative ways to do this through things like Home Assistant (this is my preference), but I think you will be happiest using Google Home. It does support multi-user location tracking, and Wyze does not despite Wyze saying this feature has been in progress since the launch of the Home Monitoring System, and it’s been requested basically since they were founded. Here is the official wishlist to vote for it:

At this point I am not sure I believe they are still working on it because it’s been a few years now since they last told us it was in progress. I think it got de-prioritized.

I was confident you would have input on this, because I think I’ve seen your previous comments about doing this sort of thing with Home Assistant incorporating geofencing for multiple family members. I’ve tried this kind of thing only with a single user in testing, which is why I responded to @WyzeJasonJ with only a . Google Home does seem like potentially the easiest suggestion. :+1:

Yes, it is fortunate that everything the user wants to do is accomplished through turning the power on and off. Anything besides power on and off would require advanced automations going through home assistant. I bring it up so often because people are often asking to be able to do things that are beyond the capabilities of Google or Alexa. But I’ll definitely recommend Google when the simple option is actually available.

Got it..I don’t have any other devices.

I’ll d/l the app to her phone too.

It’s something that I’ve never tried myself but I think if you guys were to download the app and log into the same account the simple act of her phone going inside the geofence and getting home would trigger any rules you set, it wouldn’t necessarily see that one device versus another device triggered it or anything like that but the simple fact that the device triggered that rule would set it and you should be good. Same with leaving a geofence too. So as long as you don’t have A hierarchy of wanting it to read one but not the other you should be OK I believe. But again this is only something that’s in my head and I think that’s how it should work but it’s something that I’ve never tried myself. Best of luck though! hopefully you’ll report back and let me know if my theory might be correct
