Alternative to Wyze Lock

I’ve seen many posts regarding features lacking in the Wyze Lock. YoLink just released their product and it seems to check a lot of boxes for missing features. Just posted this for a comparison to the Wyze product.

Impressive. It includes basically everything the Wyze lock and Lock bolt have plus the majority of things I’ve been asking Wyze to include in a new lock.

I wonder if it can tell if the door is open/ajar like the Wyze Lock (not just locked/unlocked). It doesn’t say on there, but the AI’s I asked claim it has door position sensors.

The only very SMALL criticisms I can think of are:

  • I believe their Home Assistant integration is primarily through the cloud and doesn’t support full local control without cloud dependency. That isn’t a deal breaker to me though, and it’s WAY better than what Wyze currently offers through Home Assistant, which is just 3rd party polling hacks. But my primary preference is LOCAL first with a fallback to cloud (ie: if the device is on the same network as Home Assistant, they talk locally, if they are on different networks, then they use the cloud instead). Again, not a deal breaker (I have lots of cloud-dependent devices on home assistant, but I wish more companies would make a bigger effort at local connectivity).
  • It seems to require the YoLink hub since it is LoRa…though I like the idea of the LoRa in general since it operates on 915 MHz and has better battery efficiency, and can support THOUSANDS of devices with a single Gateway…the only potential downside is LoRa isn’t a Matter standard, and it will require a proprietary connection. Again, not a deal breaker for me and LoRa is honestly a big positive in many ways, so this kind of balances out.
  • I’m not surprised, but I was HOPING the Home Assistant integration would include more entities than just lock/unlock, door status, and battery, but it seems it may just have those. I would’ve loved for it to allow tracking all the other entities/features like users or type code used (fingerprint vs numbers vs card, who unlocked it, etc). But I am happy it at least has a Door status entity.

One thing I dislike about the original Wyze lock is that it drains the battery badly if you put it on a door that you leave open and unlocked all day like for a small business. I put one on my Wife’s office, and they leave their door open and unlocked all day and this causes the door to continually check the position and drain the battery. I wonder if this one would do better for that.

Overall, I am highly tempted to get one at some point now. Had you posted this before BlackFriday I very well may have gotten one in November. I might wait until the next big sale like Prime Day now.

The only other thing that I think could POTENTIALLY be an interesting upgrade might be a really low power camera that takes a picture of anyone opening the door. It wouldn’t have to drain the battery with recording videos or anything, but it would be cool to take a picture anytime someone unlocks the door from the outside. That would be a neat feature, though maybe not worth the added $20 or so and a little more battery drain. Just thinking that it would be cool.

I really wish Wyze would make something almost exactly like this. It’s seriously a great lock that includes almost EVERYTHING I have wanted…within reasonable limits.

Come on Wyze! Make some good competition!

If you’re interested in the deadbolt…code HNY2025 should get you 20% off. (For some reason the lever door lock isn’t included.) You would still need the hub. I really like the Speaker Hub since you can do announcements. I think they also are now selling a cellular hub, too. A 10% off code is MERRY10.

That is a good price! I think my wife thinks I already spent too much money recently.

We even bought a TV this year for the first time in our lives  The other TVs we had were just a couple of smaller non-smart hand me downs. We’re usually fairly financially conservative but spent a lot of money this year. :scream:

But yes, when things calm down a bit I would absolutely love a lock like this that integrates with home assistant that I can even integrate into my own self monitoring stuff on there. I actually have a list of smart home devices I want to get that work with home assistant and searching for a home assistant capable smart lock almost exactly like this was already on my list of things to look for! So I am really glad you shared it. I was kind of hoping for one that would connect directly to home assistant with zigbee Z-Wave or Wi-Fi, but this very well may be the one I get now. Did you get one of these locks?

For all the features it includes, I’m surprised they kept it so reasonably priced.

Congratulations!

TVs have become doorways to our world. Better visuals are most helpful.

Enjoy.

Not yet. Still trying to find out why the discount code doesn’t apply to the lever lock. If I can get the discount I’ll probably try one for my workshop.

As for a camera, you could probably use Alexa to use a Wyze camera to activate when the lock is opened. As for local control, rumor has it that YoLink is working on a hub that functions without an internet connection. Haven’t seen any release date yet.

Yeah, our family mostly use our phones/tablets for media anyway, but we also got some video game consoles this year for the first time and games for our kids and visitors to use (we have over 3 dozen nieces and nephews who get dropped off here while parents do other things), and figured it was time to just get a real TV for everyone to use, especially when some of the older ones visit during months like these when they can’t just use our pool.

We were going to build our own house soon, but then decided on some other business priorities first instead so we just renovated our den and converted a bedroom into a new gym and bunch of other stuff since we’re probably going to stay here a few more years now… Plus new furniture, indoor playground, regular Christmas presents, etc. so I splurged a little bit this late fall already and feel like I should hold back impulsivity for a little while now. I don’t usually spend so much money in such a small amount of time and it’s bugging my conscience to cut back on spending for a little while now.

But this thing is likely to go high up on my wish list of home assistant expansion devices.

I just really wish Wyze would have gone the way of competitors like Aqara/Xiaomi, Yolink, etc. They’ve all been able to do general smart home fairly well, not just cameras, and made it so that people can use their ecosystem or integrated into others like home assistant without critical reliance on subscriptions. And they seem to be doing just fine. That’s actually the direction I expected them to go, until they switched to focus on just cameras for so long and not expand their integration options. I’m holding out moderate hope they may come around sometime by the end of 2026 (ie: after matter, camera libraries are released, And other priorities are resolved by then. But who knows. I have hope, but I’m not “waiting” for them to come around either because they may not do so until they’re last to the party and I need some smart home solutions now, not wait until 5 years from now. So Even though I love wyze in general, I have had to buy from some devices from other companies that officially support home assistant now.

I do enjoy looking up from my phones and tablets to see a larger screen and unkink my neck. I enjoy watching YouTube on a big screen in 4K while I stretch back in my recliner.

Yeah, I just got some new recliners in front of the TV and a little portable/foldable desk so I can do work on my laptop there (maybe with some portable second monitors). So we’ll see. I may enjoy doing that more now. Might buy a speaker system next year too.

I could see how a TV would be easier than a phone for ambient TV watching while working. Easier for more screen to cover more of the peripheral vision while the main focus is on my laptop. We’ll see.

I still plan to do most of my work in my home office since I just bought an expensive desktop to support 4 monitors and tons of simultaneous data I need to analyze. But it may be nice to do some work while i relax in a recliner and play TV. Maybe I’ve been missing out all these years.

Sounds like you are on your way. Glad you got the recliners.

A sound system is nice. I have a 5.1 surround system with speakers around the room. They make 5.1 surround sound bars now. Surround sound adds to audio like 4K adds to the visual experience.

Even music sounds so much better.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Better than the fruits of your Bieber.

Yeah, I’ve had surround sound systems in the past… High school, college, early marriage, also in cars. Haven’t had one in 15 years though.

They don’t even come close to real 5.1 or 7.1 systems. My wife made me get rid of my Pioneer 5.1 system (she couldn’t stand the wires) and made me switch to a sound bar wit wireless subwoofer. Not the same thing

That’s too bad, my wife was just barely saying she wanted some without wires because she hates wires too.

I don’t get it. Wires don’t bug me. Something about worrying about what other people think about it and them being judgy. I’ve always thought that that doesn’t affect me at all if somebody else is judgy. That’s their problem, not mine. :joy: What are they going to do, not want to come to my house because they see a wire? Great!! I probably don’t want them here either. Win-win! I am in no way that desperate for for anybody like me or be impressed.

But I guess a lot of research indicates a lot of guys often don’t care as much about social expectations and such or aren’t quite as sensitive to such things generally speaking. It’s one thing if convention has a reasonable, logical rationale behind it, but I’m no lover of convention just because it’s convention.

Nice hijack of a topic…

T’is one of the joys of being single.

My wires are showing on one side of the room for over 20 years. I got used to it. It’s an entertainment room and not a museum. The living room out front is for those scared of wires.

There is definitely a lot more leniency for going off topic in the water-cooler category threads, but I also agree it is certainly generally better to try to keep it relatively related because people still go to specific threads for the original topic and makes the forum experience much better when those general expectations are met. I definitely dragged it out sufficiently. My apologies my friend. :+1:

It is what it is.

No need for apologies amongst friends.

It is the watercooler.

Oh don’t get me wrong, the sound bar is good just not as good as the real 5.1. Mine has something called vertical sound that gives you the impression of sound coming from above, for example if a helicopter is flying and such.

Yeah, that’s my wife in a nutshell. She’s a neat freak, she even cleans the house top to bottom when her own sister comes t visit

Sorry bro, but it is the water cooler after all

From the FAQ for the Hub 3:

As of April 2024, the YoLink Hub 3 does not support local integration. It is planned to be completed by end of year along with matter compatibility and once completed, will be through a software update by the Hub 3.
