Alexa integration tips and tricks

I dislike Apple on principle, but I have to admit that I like the iOS Alexa GUI better on that video.

Really? The Android side looks way snappier as well as easier to read while scrolling. The only advantage on the iOS side is that most of the fonts are bigger…

Worked for me. Great trick. THANKS.

LifeHackster made a video a couple days ago and another one today :grinning:

Thanks. So what I’ve learned here is that even Amazon’s own Ring cameras take 12 freaking seconds to bring up a stream on an Echo Show. He notes the Wyze and Eufy take 20 seconds, but none of these are usable solutions. This is a pretty lousy state of the art.

I wonder if the WebRTC integration making it all mostly local will make this faster, or if it will just lower the latency. I’m not totally sure with how the protocol works.

Obviously there are lots of weak links, including the hardware. Another interesting statement was that Ring times out after 10 minutes. I thought the story was that Amazon branded cameras did not do that (and that Wyze WebRTC will not either).

By contrast my relatives were in a lower middle class apartment with a real time video lobby doorbell (to their TV) what seems like 30 years ago. 10-20 seconds to see who’s there is simply not acceptable. These things are fun little toys, not solutions.

Alexa will not stay intergrated with my Wyze cams. This gets more and more ridiculous all the time. Had 7 cams, all discovered by Alexa but can only set routines on 3 of them. No matter what I do, whether I change the names to the cams, use the other cams etc, I can not have routines on more than 3. Since I get no help from either Wyze or Alexa I thought I’d ask in here.

And then the ones that I can set alerts to I get that the device is not supported. Please can’t someone help me?

I have 4 pan cams, one v2 cam, 10 sensors, a thermostat and an outdoor cam and they all work fine with alexa. I had an issue in the past where my wifi router was overloaded with clients (I got a lot of smart home crap) so i purchased a new wifi router and that solved my issue. This probably wont’ help you, but I thought I would pass it on in case it might.

that is a very common issue for routers supplied by ISP’s where they can only have a limited number of connections.

Mine isn’t the wifi. I turned off all but the 3 I need and then nothing would intergrate for a routine. But here is the strange thing, the ones that did intergrate are doing routines on all the Alexa devices now and not just the one I chose. Ugh

Yes, my comcast modem was great and covered all corners of my house, but when I got to about 60 devices, it would not add new ones without knocking off old ones.

What version of the Wyze app are you using now?
I am using 2.17.7 on Android. I’ve noticed over the past couple of days that my Wyze cams are correctly showing up in Alexa. The cameras with PD turned on in Wyze have Person Detection routine capabilities in Alexa.
I’m not sure it’s related to the Wyze app version or if it’s just coincidence.

Interesting. I have always had problems with my 2.4ghz going out sometimes even with different routers. What router did you finally get that seems to work well with so many devices?

I am tempted to connect up multiple routers, and have half my IOT devices connect to one, and half connect to the other, then have them all route into the modem/router combo and see if that helps reduce the overload. I’ve heard some people have success using mesh routers and such to essentially do the same thing…except sometimes mesh routers cause problems because they all pretend to be the same SSID but they have a different MAC address, and so some IOT devices spaz out that there are multiple broadcasts of the same SSID or are somehow still tied to the MAC address and not just SSID, so then there are some weird conflicts from some devices.

They’ve addressed a lot of the device limit issues with newer WiFi protocols, but all IOT devices are still set up for 2.4ghz, so none of them will even use the new protocols that would resolve the issues, so we’re all stuck with the same problems anyway even though they’ve provided solutions in theory.

I got this one:

TP-Link WiFi 6 AX3000 Smart WiFi Router (Archer AX50)

I have issues with TP link support for another device I bought, but they were the only ones that answered my questions about the number of devices. I contacted the TP Link and they told me it could handle 256 but of course they could not vouch for performance with so many devices, but it would not drop any. Most of my stuff just sits idle 99.9% of the time. Sensors, light switches and the such. My TV is wired to my network so that cuts down on most of the drain you would have. So far it has worked out great for me and the interface is real simple. I need to assign some of my devices static ip addresses like my 3D printers, and it is real easy to do. It was not cheap, but it was worth it. I think I paid $150 for it.

Thanks for sharing, I’ll look into it. I might hit 100 devices this year (though some of them all run through little hubs like the contact/motion sensors), so will probably need some kind of better solution very soon.

Now, that would be a cool device for Wyze to offer…I eventually want to buy one of those, but for now have to just use my brother’s.

I believe after reading all your posts, that you need help. Do you know anyone who knows about computers or simply ā€œyoungā€? Alexa and Google Both work. I am using Google and I can see my cameras. Do you have a Tablet or a Computer? Windows or Mac? I’ll try to help.

Look through EVERY line in the menu. When my Tablet is the Monitor, it goes back and LOCKS the picture on my screen of the Mailman. You can choose the detection zone to screen out cars and waving flags (false triggers)
