Wyze scale S immediately starts weighing when I open app

I have a new Wyze S scale. It seems to be weighing accurately and sending to my phone. But it seems I have to open my Wyze app to get it to sync to my phone. It won’t send without opening app?

And then when I open the app that, it asks if I am the member, and I say yes, and then it starts measuring while I’m not on the scale sending a weight of like 18lbs to my phone in addition to my original weight.

How do I get it to stop measuring when I open the app? I’m stumped.

Thanks!

I don’t think so, no. Because it uses Bluetooth for the connection to send the data from the scale to your phone so that it can be uploaded to your Wyze account, it “wakes up” when your phone is near with the Wyze app open and makes that connection, and you should see the symbol on the Scale S’s display when that happens. When I do that and open my Wyze app to the Scale S’s home screen, I notice that the numbers in the app usually take a few seconds to update while it synchronizes with the scale.

Most of the time I just step on the scale without opening my phone. I used to open the scale’s module within the app on my phone every time I wanted to take measurements[1], but then I learned that the scale will store several measurements (I’m not sure exactly how many) without being tethered to the phone and will then transfer those to the phone when the phone is connected at a later time. For the most part, I’m using the scale daily for myself and then using Pet Mode once a week to weigh a couple of cats, and it’s when I do that weekly thing that I actually have the app open to the scale module and my own data gets sync’d to the phone and my Wyze account.

Regarding the extraneous measurements and being asked about your profile, I wonder if the latter is related to this from the Quick Start Guide: “If your Wyze Scale S is shared by users with similar weights, make sure the scale is connected to the Wyze app of the user taking the measurement or data may not be recorded on the correct profile.” I’m not currently sharing my Scale S with another Wyze user, so I haven’t seen that prompt to confirm my identity, but when I use Pet Mode the app asks me which pet’s profile to assign the weight to, so I wonder if you’re seeing something like that.

The extra 18# makes me wonder if there’s an issue with the scale’s calibration or if something else is happening. Especially since your Scale S is new, I’d be inclined to submit a log and then open a ticket with Support about this. You could also try recalibrating the scale and/or deleting it from the app and going through setup again if this is a persistent issue. If it’s just a few errant measurements, then you can delete those from your profile so that they don’t affect your other data:

  1. On the Scale S’s home screen, tap the icon to the right of Trends & History.
  2. On the History screen, tap Edit in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap the circles (they look like radio button controls) to the left of each data point/weight line you want to delete from your history.
  4. Tap Delete in the lower-right corner.
  5. Tap Delete in the confirmation dialog.
  6. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.

Occasionally I have measurements of my weight only that don’t include the other metrics, so that’s what I use to delete that data.

If the Scale S is registering a weight when nothing is on the scale every time you open the app to the Scale S’s home screen, then you could try going through the Troubleshooting section of the Help Center to see if a factory reset or other advice there helps, but I wonder if something is funky with your scale itself, and for that I’d be inclined to contact Support.

Welcome to the Forum, @barrianne!

  1. The Quick Start Guide seems to advise this: “Open the Wyze app and connect to your Wyze Scale S before taking measurements to ensure the data is recorded on the correct profile.” Because of that, I thought it was necessary to have my phone open to that part of the Wyze app before stepping on the scale. ↩︎

Thank you so much. Apparently I do need to open the app. I weighed myself 30 minutes ago and it has not updated on the scale. And I do know how to delete the data.

I’m not sharing with anyone else.

And last night it showed an errant few pounds weigh-in when I didn’t touch the scale (maybe the door on the bathroom touched it).

But my concern is, I have to go to an extra step to get the app to sync, and I don’t want it to start “weighing” - I actually see the graphic going from 0 to anywhere below 20 pounds. What I did discover is if I avoid touching the “scale” icon and just the history, I’ll get the accurate weight and it won’t start automatically “weighing air” anew. It’s frustrating and so far, not impressed with this scale and app. sigh.

I also just tested it again. When i tap on “bathroom scale”

it started “weighing” as below:

Then it asks me, are you the user xxx@email.com? Previously I had been saying yes, this time I said “no” and it did not record the 22lbs. But this seems very very strange and wrong.

I’m not quite sure what this means:

I was getting the impression before that you’re tapping the tile in the app for the Scale S, on either the Favorites or the Devices tab.

In any case, these extra weights when you’re not standing on the scale are weird, and I’d contact Support about that, particularly if you’re using the scale as recommended (on a solid flat surface, calibrating as necessary so that the scale shows “0.0”, etc.). I don’t know why it’s doing these extra “22.5 lb” and other measurements unless there’s a hardware problem or something.

I haven’t seen mention of it here, but I imagine Support will also ask what versions of the app and firmware you’re using, because they’ll likely suggest updates so that you’re current as part of the troubleshooting.

Thank you! If I touch the scale icon graphic in “devices” it immediately starts the false weighing. If I navigate right to the data history it does not do that and then updates my most recent weight.

This morning, I waited for my morning weigh-in toshow up on phone. It did not. I opened Wyze, and it showed “not connected” and then after a few seconds “connected” and my new weight reflected.

Per Google, it says you DO have to open the app to have it connect to the phone.

For most Wyze Scales (e.g., Wyze Scale X)

  1. Step on the scale: with your bare feet to be weighed and have your measurements taken.

  2. The scale stores your data internally.

  3. Open the Wyze app: on your iPhone and connect to the scale via Bluetooth.

  4. The scale will then sync and upload your measurements to your user profile in the app.

Yes, you have to launch the Wyze app to get Scale S to connect to the phone, but you can still use the scale and have it store measurements in between the times that you open the app and connect the phone to the scale, I just don’t know how much data it can store (i.e., how many measurements) between sync operations. When you do that—step on the Scale S when the phone isn’t connected and running the app—then the scale should send the most recent measurements to the app the next time it’s connected. That’s how I understand it and have been using it, anyway.

That’s my typical experience when using Scale S and the Wyze app.

In that scenario, you’re still opening the Scale S’s main screen in the app to get to the history, though, right? You’re just trying to get to the history before a false measurement completes? I’m not sure how else you’d see the history, and I’m trying to understand what you’re experiencing.

If you continue to see those false measurements on the scale, I’d still contact Support about that. I’d also consider editing your post to remove your e-mail address and any other information you don’t want out there in the public Forum. I’d hate to see you get spammed because of that.
