Too much wifi is a concept I first heard floated on the forum by @dave27 here.

I bought a three node mesh router package a number of years ago and it turned out, after performing all the positional tweaking of nodes and clients I could, it worked best with two. Three was too much. ![]()
Oh yeah, what you are referring to is commonly referred to as signal overlap, signal interference, and oversaturation or radio frequency congestion.
If too many mesh nodes are too close together or in sub-optimal positions, their radio signals can overlap excessively and cause interference, including experiencing increased latency, reduced throughput, And devices constantly switching between router nodes unnecessarily, causing a break in connectivity repeatedly in certain cases.
So, you are absolutely right that more isnât always better. Part of it depends on how big your home is, how powerful the Wi-Fi is, etc. you may have actually been able to make everything better if you used all three but reduced the broadcast distance. It kind of depends on what settings you have available and your environmental situation. But if everything works well with just two, then definitely just leave it that way.
You do bring up a great point though. I havenât usually suggested this as a possible issue people might be experiencing with their connectivity concerns. But youâre right that we do often have people say that they will even put the camera like right next to the router or that they have lots of mesh routers. So itâs obviously not their Wi-Fi. Thatâs the problem, but it is quite possible that is exactly part of the problem theyâre having. I should probably add that to my list. I do have on my list about over saturation and signal interference but not necessarily in the context of somebody having too many mesh notes in their house or in some cases the camera being too close to the router. So many possible things that can be taken into account.

The point is misrepresentation. I think. They list these gee-whiz features on the box and then you learn (if youâre lucky) that you shouldnât use them. Oh. ![]()
I can prove that. I have one camera that is mounted outside and it is literally 3 feet from the router behind a window. It only shows one bar in the app. Havenât had any issues with it but gets the least WiFi signal.
Update: I talked to my WiFi Therapist and she said she understood my example and that it was justified in context and especially since I admitted for the sake of social cohesion that it was a âbad example.â She feels we have made another breakthrough and doesnât get why tech cos misrepresent gee-whiz features either! In conclusion, she thanked me for posting.

Found another instance today while looking for something else:
2.4 GHz & 5 GHz (vs 5G)
Two WiFi radios that operate on your router at different frequencies (measured in gigahertz.) Respective strengths: 2.4 signal travels farther - 5 can accommodate more client devices and at greater bandwidth. Most IoT devices (and most Wyze cams) operate at 2.4 only.
Contrast 5G which is a cellular radio and stands for 5th Generation.

I ran a 100â power cord out to my chicken coops and ran around 4 cams inside and out. No problems with running them, except with the wifi untilI got a better router.
