Wyze Doorbell 2 Now reporting "motion" and "sound" when both have been turned off for months

Not sure what’s going on with Wyze… I’ve been silent in hopes of Wyze fixing issues, but…

This morning my Wyze Doorbell 2 started sending “motion alerts” for areas that I have blocked in the detection zone and sending “sound detected” notifications when I have have had that turned off since I installed it. This is in addition to the on-going issue with V.4 cameras not connecting for minutes on end. It’s always something with these cameras and it’s ALWAYS after an update. It’s apparent that Wyze does not really test the updates, that’s pretty much up to the customer these days. We see a problem and complain. Eventually, a few months later it gets “fixed” with another “update”. I’ve said it before… how about having a “Wyze Camera Division” and a “Wyze Junk Brand-Extension Division” for all the gun safes, robo vacuums, palm locks and other assorted short-lived junk. I wish Wyze would stick to making the best camera they can, but I guess there’s no real money in that.

Have you tried the “reset services” on the doorbell, and then rebooting it after?

Not sure which v4 issue you’re talking about, unless it is when you’re trying to connect to more than 3 at the same time (cam group, auto stream on the favorites view, etc). That issue actually affects all cams, not just the v4.

After doing the reset services, go back into your detection/notification settings and set it back how you want it, as it will change them back to defaults.

Thank you for the reply. I “reset services” and checked all of the settings I want. I’ll have to wait to see if I get any more of the “sound detected” notifications. Thanks for your help.

As far as my cameras go… I have 2 v.4 cameras in their own group. When I open that group, it takes a minute or more for a connection to occur. I also have 2 v.4s in a group of 6 cameras (the others are v.3), and they connect normally. I have a Deco Mesh Router, with nodes within 6 feet of each of the cameras, high-speed internet, etc. I clear the cache regularly with no effect. I restart the app and restart the device with no effect.

These cameras are so frustrating. They’ll be fine for a month or two… then an update… then I see complaints popping up on forums… then the obligatory “Wyze is aware of the issue and has a team working on it”… same ol’ tune.

Again, thanks for your help.

Yeah you won’t hear any argument from anyone here that their updates are not tested well enough. I often wait to update firmware until a week or so (at least) to see what complaints there are. I do let the app auto update, but that’s more because I’m not a heavy user of the cams, they’re mostly there for seeing who is at the door or “just in case” I need footage of something, and generally I can work around the bugs.

Curious if you have automatic streaming enabled on your favorites tab or not? That can cause issues so maybe try disabling that in the app settings if so.

I’m not sure I know what “automatic streaming” is or where to find it. Do you mean the Favorites Tab on the Wyze app?

I see the Favorites Tab, but I don’t see any features associated with it.

I think the idea is to toggle off  Account ➜ App Settings ➜ Autoplay Video Live Streams  to prevent those from automatically playing on the Favorites tab (if you have individual, non-grouped camera tiles that you’ve placed there) as a means to compensate for the slow-loading Cam v4s. There appears to be a fix for that loading/connection issue with the most recent β firmware release, and I would expect that to mature to production sometime this month.

With regard to your primary issue, if you’re using a subscription and have selected  Settings ➜ Event Recording ➜ Smart Detection Events but are still seeing unwanted generic “Complete Motion Detected” and “Sound Detected” notifications, then you’ll need to temporarily switch RECORDING PREFERENCES to All Events in order to make the Customize Detections screen available so that you can deselect those. Sometimes that’s part of what may get reset with a firmware update or when using Reset Services, so you’d want to do something like this:

  1. Navigate from Video Doorbell v2’s Live Stream screen to  Settings ➜ Event Recording.
  2. In the RECORDING PREFERENCES section, select All Events. This changes the Customize Recordings item in that section to Customize Detections.
  3. Tap Customize Detections.
  4. On the Customize Detections screen, deselect Other Motion and Other Sounds for the NOTIFY column.
  5. Navigate back one screen to Event Recordings and select Smart Detection Events. This will change Customize Detections back to Customize Recordings.

If you’re still receiving notifications and generating events for motion outside your Detection Zone, then you may want to verify that the zone is set as desired. If you don’t already have it enabled, then you may want to turn on Motion Tagging at least until you’ve had a chance to capture some events so that you can have a better idea (from the green Motion Tagging boxes) if the motion triggering those events is within or outside your Detection Zone.

OK… I have followed your instructions to the letter. Hopefully, my issues will be gone. Many thanks for your help. I appreciate it!

There is an issue currently where trying to stream more than a few cams at once causes the rest not to connect. Streaming on the favorites tab (which you’ve now disabled) can cause that limit to be hit without you knowing it, so hopefully shutting that off will fix it.

Honestly ever since that feature was introduced it was glitchy for me causing some live views not to load, this is before the current but surfaced. So personally I’ve had it off for quite some time. Unless you particularly like it, I’d probably just leave it off even after this bug is fixed. I much prefer using a cam group for when I want to see multiple cams at once.

You’re welcome, and I hope that’s helpful.

When you went through the instructions, did you find Other Motion and Other Sounds checked for NOTIFY? I’m curious to know if that’s part of the issue you were seeing.

As far as I know (at least in my experience), those boxes will be re-checked automatically if you select All Events on the Event Recording screen and then click into Customize Detections. Whenever I’m dealing with this, I make sure that I un-check those boxes, back out to Event Recording, select Smart Detection Events (I’m using a subscription), and then avoid selecting All Events again unless it becomes necessary for me to check those two particular items. I don’t know why there’s a difference in these two screens (Customize Detections versus Customize Recordings) and why those Other Sound and Other Motion lines appear only on the former, but several of us have tried to bring this to Wyze’s attention to get it changed because of the way that it causes these particular notification issues and because the solution is not intuitive at all.
