Wyze cam V3 as DashCam

Hi everyone,
Back in early days 2022 early 2023 i did flash 2 V3 with the RTSP FW 4.61.0.3. They have been working since.
Also remember that before updating to RTSP i was able to use them as a DashCam without internet.
As soon as i was back home it would sync on my WiFI network and could get the recording.

A week ago i did flash a 3rd Cam V3 with FW 4.36.11.7071 that was the oldest one i could find on Wyze site. Then i try my RTSP FW but it get stuck. I guess that i need an older FW.

Anyway i did add that Cam that has the 7071 FW in a standalone SSID that i can disable anytime on my router. I disabled the Wifi and let the camera on windows side and 24 hours later i reactivate the Wifi and all the recording was there. So far so good.
Then i took a ride with the car for the grocery, and it did also recorded everything.

When i got back home i notice that the camera had a new firmware 4.36.11.8391 and then today i was back to current FW 4.36.14.3497 and it does not record when no network.
Is there a way to revert back to previous FW like i did and keep that FW indefinitly.
Also i would like to find an earlier FW 2022 or early 2023 so i could install RTSP. That way FW update will be locked out.
Or if i leave the 4.36.11.7071 in the SD Card would it prevent the Cam to update itself with OTA FW?

If anyone have any suggestion to revert early enought to install RTSP, they are welcome.
Thanks
Daniel

It does record, but it records to the date of the firmware build since it can’t get the current date and time from the internet. It also will reboot every 30 mins.

You can manually revert to old firmware using the manual “upgrade” procedure with an SD card. Keep in mind the RTSP firmware is very old, vulnerable, and not supported. But if you go that way, just disable auto updates so the cam doesn’t update itself.

But honestly, high res dash cams are so cheap and can see license plates so much better, you may want to just consider using one made for the purpose.

Well Dave
i also use them to record Train at key locations. I just hide the Camera with a Good battery pack that last 3 or 4 day. Then i drive by with my hotspot to access the Cam and i just record the clip that i want.
I did revert back to [4.36.11.7071] (October 22, 2023) that was the oldest they have.
With that FW i am ok to record with no internet and it keep the time stamp as long as i do not power off. At home i am on a Battery bank which is also connectect to the wall so 100% all the time. In my testing the cam was on the Battery bank for a week with not power off.
But while it was connected on internet a home it did update.

but to be able to intall RTSP i need 4.36.2.5 (June 14, 2021) as per a post
from Gwen in 2021
"Hey, everyone! Here’s the post you’ve been waiting for! Version : 4.61.0.1 Release Notes: Added support for RTSP Based on 4.36.2.X "
Seem the RTSP FW is base on 4.36.2.x
So i am actively looking for someone that has that FW.

Also you say to disable the auto updates, i never seen any thing to do so. When it pop me up i deny the update and tick to do not ask again.

Toward the end of @carverofchoice’s post here there is a section you can expand to get the old unsupported RTSP firmware. If there is a version between that and the current one you want to get back, you can probably find that on something like waybackmachine or internet archive etc too

In the app under cam settings then firmware you should be able to uncheck auto update (not sure if the app even communicates with the RTSP firmware anymore though, but I’m assuming it does).

If RTSP is a requirement, then two things came to mind while I was reading this topic:

  1. Thingino, which is linked from @carverofchoice’s quoted post and which should be expected to have a more up-to-date (hopefully more secure) RTSP implementation than what you’re likely to get from deprecated and unsupported firmware.
  2. Recent Wyze co-founder comments about officially bringing RTSP support back to Cam v3.

I don’t know what the timeline is for #2, but I’d consider “watching” that topic and possibly anything else in the Wyze News category, because I’d expect any official announcements about firmware availability with RTSP support to appear as new topics within that Forum category.

I think the issue is just that the later firmwares require constant wifi connectivity where the RTSP one didn’t, not that RTSP is necessarily needed (though @VA2DG can correct me if I’m wrong). It could be a matter of finding which firmware implemented that 30 minute reboot. @grapefruityoda I believe is the expert on keeping track of that. If that reboot is eliminated, a user can boot up the cam at home off a battery bank, let it synch up, then take it with them mobile. Or use the hotspot on their phone to do the same.

The Cam V3 firmware 4.36.13.0416 released on July 18, 2024 introduces a new behaviour where the V3 will automatically restart itself when the internet is out for more than 30 minutes. Any firmware released before this one should be okay. You can read up more on this particular issue here.

Here is the Waybackmachine / Archive link from Jan 2022 for Wyze’s firmware page. From there, you can also download the FW 4.36.2.5 (June 14, 2021).

There’s also a github page dedicated for Wyze firmware

Make sure auto update firmware is disabled. To access it, click on the gear icon of your camera:
Settings > Device Info > Firmware Version > Automatic Update

I am tagging @K6CCC here as I believe he’s using Wyze cams as dash cams without RTSP.

That was my other thought—not RTSP related at all—when I saw the title of this topic. :+1:
