Wyze Cam v2/Pan Firmware for Beta Test 5/24/2021

Got you. Thanks. So the one camera having this issue was the camera you submitted the log with, right?

Yes that’s correct. May have other cameras misbehaving but not all.

Crashed my camera and I was on with support over an hour since camera is over a year old they will email me info IF they will replace the camera :frowning:

Seems to me that since you’re testing for them they should replace the camera if the firmware causes it to fail. Do they want to destroy thousands of cameras instead?

The account reconnected 77 times, it took me the third night. Until May 24, there were no problems connecting to the smart display Google Home Hub. As soon as the new firmware 4.9.7 was released. 608 on the smart display only has a black screen and a blue circle is constantly spinning. Developers themselves do not bother to buy a smart display from google home. It will come in handy. The first one was fixed, the second one was broken. So we live.

Nope, camera is out of warranty so its I’m out of luck so a warning to anyone beta app testing a Wyze device that is older than one year. Crappy to say the least as I know it was the firmware update that crashed my perfectly working camera.

Did you try flashing the firmware back to another version with the SD card firmware flashing method?

It is strange when a few random cameras brick on an update while most others that seem to be in the exact same situation have no problems. I wonder what the difference is.

I guess that’s a good thing to keep in mind…we should only beta test firmware for 2 different kinds of devices:

  1. Devices that are still under warranty
  2. Devices we are willing to accept as a loss

That news means it a good thing that Wyze has now set things up so we can choose firmware updates for individual product categories or individual product items themselves instead of automatic bulk updating.

Also happy that we are dealing with fairly inexpensive cameras. While I don’t want to waste $20-$30 for no reason to replace a camera either, I would definitely be upset if they were something like $100+ Nest cameras that I had to replace. $20-$30 still sucks, but I’m a lot more willing to take a chance on these Wyze cameras that are 3.5-5 times cheaper just to get the benefits of playing around with some of the latest features and toys. If I had something like Nest cams, I’d almost definitely never beta test firmware on them.

Anyway, thanks for sharing that we need to be extra careful with our out of warranty devices. I might stop updating a few of my older cams to beta releases and keep most of the beta stuff to the newer devices or wait a couple weeks until I see if others had problems first.

My condolences on your camera nonetheless. Let us know if there is any chance of SD card firmware flashing it back to life or something similar. I know others who have had such luck bringing a device back to life like that.

No luck trying the SD card firmware flash as camera never comes to life only solid yellow light when powered up. I suspect the circuitry on the older camera was weak and the firmware update causing a higher current draw opened the circuitry. I backed out of the beta app and will be very reluctant to do any firmware update on devices that are working fine! Wyze seems to do an overkill on updates as they come around way to often for what should be tested and proven device.

So that means even if a production firmware update destroys an out of warranty camera, you are out of luck. That would mean the morale of this is too never update the firmware on an out of warranty product. That really doesn’t make sense to me. The goal of updates is improved security, performance and features. Seems to me that Wyze would really like to know if the firmware is going to aggravate a lot of customers by bricking their devices. Better to replace a few for beta testers, I would think.

Update: After considering this issue I will no longer be a beta tester. Nearly all of my products are out of warranty so testing updates that could potentially render them useless makes no sense to me. Not sure how Wyze will deal with this but the current response is unacceptable to me.

Hello,

Sorry about your issue. Do you still have the solid yellow device? I would like to get it back for more analysis. I can send you a new camera for replacement if you still have the defective device. Please PM me your name, email, phone number, and address.

Thank you

For me, this is actually something I really like about Wyze far and above the other companies I have tried (especially for Cameras). I like that I get lots of new firmware updates frequently and that Wyze is always working on stuff and adding stuff and testing and improving things.

It does sound to me like you would be much happier remaining with production firmware though. Betatesting is not supposed be proven stuff that they are confident will work and not have problems. It constantly has problems, but I expect that and enjoy figuring out what those problems are and helping get them resolved. That’s one of the main points of beta-testing. If a person hates bugs and problems and just wants something that is mostly likely to function well, then beta-testing is not a place to be at all. Over the last week I have been having tons of messed up issues over helping with new firmware and the new rules engine, and helping figure what’s causing the issues, but it’s been enjoyable to me, especially as I see Wyze work so hard to find and resolve all those issues. I love it…I knew it would happen though. In fact I told my family I just signed up for a new beta that might screw up all our smart devices, so just let me know when they find an issue…then I found a bunch and they resolved most of them already, it was exciting to me. That’s what Beta is really about.

Beta moves to production as soon as they’re fairly confident they’ve got things fairly stable with few bug reports and nothing that statistically appears significantly detrimental.

Nonetheless, I totally plan to be extra careful. On future Betas I will probably upgrade just a few of my warranty devices first, then when they appear to be fine, and nobody else reports any severe issues, then I’ll upgrade some others too.

Also, make sure to take WyzeXuLi up on their offer to trade you devices so they can figure out what actually happened!

mine says up to date but showing firmware of 4.9.6.241. same with v3 says upd but firmware of 4.36.1.4

If you want to participate in beta firmware updates, you have to go to Account tab > About > Beta Program > Edit, and select the device models where you would like to see Beta updates (Cam v1, Cam (the v2), Cam Pan, Cam v3).

You can follow the above process in both the Beta app & the production app.

I had some trouble updating the firmware (and getting notifications) on my Cam v2 until I noticed my SD card was almost full. Once I formatted it, notifications came back and the firmware updated. Running the beta Android app and whatever was the latest firmware prior to.

i noticed that last year when I was running 3 v2’s, now at least once a week I reformat and clear the card. not the issue but thanks for the heads up
