WYZE Cam OG "Spotlight Mystery"

Like the title says, the spotlight is a mystery to understand.
Some times it works and other times it won’t.
I set full sensitivity in Detection option to trigger on Sound and Motion in full dark.
It’s a random and sporadic result.
Latest firmware.
Is it defect?

If you use the “auto” spotlight feature, it has to be dark enough to trigger night mode (black and white). Even if you have night mode disabled, it has to cross that threshold for the spotlight to turn on with motion.

If you want it to come on when it isn’t that dark, you can create an automation for it, using either “dusk to dawn” or a specific time, or both.

I use on “Auto” and set to “Dusk” and set to trigger on “Motion” detection.

Thanks for your personal help but this thing is a bugfest nightmare.

Luckily, Amazon refunded and told me to keep this POS.

Will play with it till it dies.

Terrible Wyze camera product…a failure.

Set the spotlight to manual, otherwise it will override your automation.

Create an automation, trigger is motion detected, action is turn on spotlight for 1 minute (or whatever time you want). Set the time from dusk to dawn or whatever times you want.

Works like a charm, I’ve been using it that way on several OGs for over a year.

The “auto” only works when the light level is below a certain amount, and if you have ambient light in the area it may never hit that. That is working by design in that case. The automation allows you to override that behavior. Hardly consider it a “POS” due to that, I really like my OGs, they have been extremely reliable and capture great quality images for the tiny amount I paid for them.

Thanks for help.
I think am being baffled by the spotlight cooldown time.
Am not using subscription and I read it takes 5 minutes for it to trigger again.
Hope I am wrong.

Pretty sure if you use the automation there is no cooldown, I can’t recall if I’ve ever tested it though. Not sure if there is one using the “auto” setting or not, but you’re not going to use that so doesn’t matter.

The thing won’t trigger another spotlight event within some time after last motion.

Seems like 5 mins threshold.

Hope there’s a way to trigger 30 seconds spotlight on every motion event.

This, running on NO SUB.

Are you running your Wyze OG cams on free?

If not, what u suggest?

Thanks for help.

I have no subscription. I just tested an automation and it does have a 5 minute cooldown for the spotlight, it seems the motion “trigger” is actually an event trigger, which has the 5 minute limitation.

At least with an automation the light will come on no matter what the ambient light is, but if you want it to come on more than once every 5 minutes, it appears you’ll need to subscribe to cam plus. Has never been an issue for me, I wouldn’t want it going on and off all the time anyway.

Bottom Line, this cam is a nightmare.

Because it won’t turn on the light more than once every 5 minutes? I guess we disagree on the definition of nightmare. But by all means, if you’re not happy with it, send it back.

If you have motion that frequently that you want lit up, look at lightbulbs that have built in motion and/or dusk/dawn sensors, or fixtures designed for that. Would probably make more sense.

Finally, the thing works like a charm but spotlight won’t turn on immediately unless you have a subscription.
There’s definitely a 5 minutes cooldown without a sub.
Never found any official docs on this.
Wyze should specify this behaviour.
Thank you for your help
