Wyze app mobile data consumption even under wifi with mobile data off

I noticed in my ne Redmi Note 14 5G that under my prepaid mobile data plan the data consumption increased more than 400% compared to previous months, I’ve found that in a time of the day when I have my mobile data off, the Wyze app was the only app consuming mobile data when the phone was connected to a wifi with mobile data off, I found in the settings an option to allow or block mobile data per app and a note indicates that “some apps consume some mobile data even with mobile data off”, after blocking for Wyze app I noticed no mobile data consumption when mobile data is off, but I started experiencing connecting problem while in mobile data with no wifi near, I can see the mosaic of 5 cameras but if I click one camera a “oops something went wrong…” like that message is shown in the wyze app, today I noticed it might be related to the setting I changed to block mobile data consumption when mobile data is off, but it shouldn’t be the reason because last week it happened to me while off home under mobile data in a random fashion, sometimes it worked fine like before, the weirdest I see is that for some cameras it worked and for others not, under the mosaic it always work, is when you click one camera that the “oops…” message appears.
If some other experienced this it would be interesting to hear Wyze techs give some explanation why mobile data is being consumed by Wyze app even when mobile data is off, I believed turning mobile data off was enough to be sure no mobile data traffic is being done, it seems you need to remove your sim card to be 100% sure…!!

This is your problem. MIUI on Redmi phones is different from most Android phone firmware versions. They include features that can override per-app data toggles in order to maintain stability and ensure they can continue to send push notifications.

Some of the issues involved include:

  • Smart network switching feature (falls back to cellular to keep connections alive even if you think mobile data is turned off…your smart network switching is keeping it on)
  • Background service exemptions (allows “critical processes” to be whitelisted and bypass data-off restrictions to keep real-time alerts)
  • Granularity of MIUI’s data settings (when you are disabling mobile data, your Redmi phone is lying to you, it only blocks some background usage, but still allows foreground requests and prioritized system processes to continue to use Mobile data.)

Your best workaround is to do the following:

Switch your phone into airplane mode, THEN re-enable WiFi afterward. This is a cool loophole for you that will keep mobile data actually disabled.

Alternatives:

  • I don’t know if this will work for sure, but you could re-allow Wyze under Mobile Data settings but disable its background data. In theory, that way you’ll get live streams over your plan without surprise background usage.
  • Something else to look for: In Wi-Fi settings, turn off smart network switch (sometimes called “switch to mobile data automatically”) so your device won’t silently hop to cellular when Wi-Fi seems weak.
  • You could also get a third-party firewall for more granular control than MIUI is giving.

Normally what you are experiencing indicates your Redmi thinks the WiFi connection isn’t strong and reliable for some reason. I have no idea why that might be, but it might be worth changing the settings so it stops acting inconsistently with what you want.

thanks for your reply, MIUI was replaced for Redmi version 14 with Xiaomi HyperOS, another point is that only for Wyze app it showed use of mobile data when mobile data was off, for all the other apps and system features no mobile data usage was shown when mobile data was off, when blocked use of mobile data for Wyze app, the mobile data usage graph shown no usage in the hours when mobile data was off, so the problem is only seen in Wyze app which is forcing the usage of mobile data for some reason, fortunately HyperOS can block it, I never experienced this problem when using my LG G5 with Android 7, unfortunately it entered the loop mode a few months ago and I had to go for a new phone.

Frustrating. I will keep an eye out for similar reports on the other platforms (Discord, Reddit, X, TikTok, etc). It’s been a long time since I saw similar reports, so I thought Wyze had done something to help prevent it. Maybe there is something they need to check into again.

I can confirm that this doesn’t happen on my Pixel 9Pro XL, so that still makes me think that there might be some kind of phone setting involved.

But this is a really important issue for those with prepaid or limited metered data, so hopefully something can be figured out. If you find a solution, please give a follow-up so we can share with others too.
