The old process is still there but there is a bug currently where it saves both a still frame as well as a video, and names them the same thing (same file name, different extension). Android apparently doesn’t handle that well, I guess it ignores the extension when indexing files for their gallery app.

Long story short, you can view the video in your file manager app, and if you rename it there, it will show up in your phone’s gallery also and should synch to google (if it isn’t already, I’m not sure if the bug prevents that or not, might be worth checking online, it may be there already). Another option is to connect to a PC or use the share feature in the app (which, as you say, isn’t the preferred approach for some, though others do prefer it).
But I am curious if you look at google photos online, can you see both the still frame and video there?
