We’re Giving Wyze Person Detection to All Users at Whatever Price You Want - 1/11/22

So you’re saying I can do event recording to the SD card and it won’t record when there isn’t an event and it won’t limit me to a 5 minute cooldown. Is that right? If so, that’s exactly what I want.

I also want RTSP to work with the stock firmware. I’ve been asking that for years.

I just got an email from Apple. My iphone will no longer make calls unless I opt-in and name my own price for the great calling feature that I have already had for years which I was promised when I purchased the phone… It was even printed right on the box.

Sound absurd to anyone else?

Yes, I actually do that today. I have a few camera’s which do continuous and a few which only record events.

Also note, as per the announcement:

This would provide you what you have today with Person Detection,

Also: I am not a Wyze employee, I am a community member as you are. However, I volunteered to test the Beta releases of the apps and firmware. I do know the RTSP firmware is out there for use and testing, but it is not part of the standard release. Have you added a Wish List for RTSP to be part of the normal firmware? given the space requirements and the processing, I am not sure this can be accomplished, but it does not hurt to try.

carverofchoice answered as well and I won’t have to opt in as I am already a cam plus subscriber.

Thanks for the help and response, but I never had the option last year to opt into the “name your price” promotion. I paid full price for my cam plus subscriptions.

From the email that was sent to me today.

“You’ve already got unlimited recording and the full AI package on your Cam Plus enabled cameras. The full AI package includes Person Detection, Pet Detection, Vehicle Detection, and Package Detection.”

“In addition to that, for all Cam Plus members we are automatically enabling “Cam Plus Lite” on any other Wyze Cams you might have on your account, which will add Person Detection to 12-second Event videos at no additional cost. We’ll get you set up over next couple of days, and then all you need to do is toggle on Person Detection in Services within the Account tab.”

I have 5 Wyze v3 and 1 Wyze V2. The V3 cams are AWESOME! Especially awesome at night. I have SD cards in all of them. Can’t say as I understand half this email. I’ve never tried the free week long cloud stuff and don’t know anything about it. Just more situational awareness if I need to or want to go back and look at the video on the SD card.

Is that stuff a big benefit? Does it work? Maybe I need to know more about wyze as their price point is great and the picture and night vision is great as well especially considering they are all looking through glass.

I have 3 arlo camera v3 cameras outside that I no longer pay subscription on as they are horrible. The hit on everything no matter what you have set ast the activity zone and no support as is the case I think with every tech company. They look good and have a good picture but that’s it. Their only advice is to only have the camera visually not see my sidewalks or streets, which is impossible unless you turn the cam to just see the side wall of the house. They just look good and possibly help deter the criminals here in my hood.

You don’t need to do anything, they will add Cam Plus Lite to your account for free automatically in the coming days so that you can use it on any future cams you get (that don’t have Cam Plus) or if you ever get rid of Cam Plus. You can carry on as normal and it will be automatically handled for you over the next few days in case you want it later. :+1:

(To other observers: this explanation is specific to pete454ss’s specific situation since they already pay for cam plus…depending on your particular situation, you might have to manually opt-in)

Thanks for clearing it up… much appreciated.

Not answering for @UserCustomerGwen , but I have Cam Plus on my Camera’s, the benefit to using Cam Plus is the ability to get AI notification and eliminate the noise of all motion. To me, it works great. Cam Plus Lite will allow for Person Detection as part of the package. So if you only want to be notified of a person and not all motion, this could be a benefit.

Wyze is also making a few upgrades to local storage, which is awesome. I actually use Cam Plus and SD Card together. Below is an explanation of what is changing for the SD Card process.

I couldn’t have said it better. Three cheers! Somewhere along the way, Wyze has lost its bearings.

The way I use my cameras, I do not need person detection. The cameras are in parts of my house where humans rarely go. I use them to keep an eye on areas that have equipment I want to keep an eye on. But I do value the 12 second videos and I realize it costs Wyze money to provide those, so I am willing to pay (a little) to keep those 12 second videos.

Well well well. Finally time for me to start buying V3s.

This is mostly great news, and thanks Wyze. However some customers expecting the out of the box plain vanilla old deal are going to be (a) annoyed to discover the cloud recordings are suddenly gone one day and/or (b) annoyed at the subtly aggressive upselling if/when they try to get CamPlus Lite for $0 or anything less than “recommended”. I can see a lot of angry people, normally not checking Wyze feeds but one day looking for a significant event who are shocked to find recordings were turned off months prior.

(The level beneath CamPlus could have just been called “Cam”. )

I think that’s the level beneath Cam Plus Lite

I live in an area with high traffic and set detection zones and low detection to mitigate notifications for all my motion events since I am not a cam plus user and have been okay with how it has been. I have opted in to CPL with person detection and just did some testing of the camera settings to have detect motion for event recordings and have notifications only set to Wyze AI Events to only capture people detection. I loosened my detection zone and turned my sensitivity back to 50. But I just had the mail man come by and it didn’t record him nor me pickup the mail. When I check the events tab, all I have is motion events recorded and no people detected. I am just wondering is it because of the 5 minute cool down that an event can be recorded is over riding the people recordings. I don’t want to record motion anymore, but there is no option to disable motion detection otherwise people detection won’t trigger under CPL.

Yes, good observation. The 5-minute cooldown is not just for Person detections, it is STILL a 5-minute cooldown for ANY motion, and if that motion has a person, then it will tell you there was a person.

So for example, if you previously had a detection zone only looking at your porch, and now you expand that to include the sidewalk, road, nearby trees, etc. hoping to only be notified of people…it will still record anytime there is motion and start the 5 minute cooldown. So if the tree branches blow, it will trigger a motion event, and then won’t record another video for 5 more minutes. So if the Mailman comes in 2 minutes after the last time it recorded the tree branches blowing, or someone driving by in the car, then it won’t alert you about the mail man because it hasn’t been 5 minutes since the last time it recorded something.

Best thing to do is to simply keep your settings close to where they were working well for you before with just motion, but now when you set it to person notifications only, it will further reduce those false notifications to only tell you when a person was in the video.

At my last house I had this person detection program (before I got cam plus) and I blocked out all the plants and just had the detection zone for my porch and sidewalk and played with the sensitivity until I found a good setting to where little stuff wouldn’t trigger it, but something the size of a human was enough movement to trigger it. Then my person detection was pretty reliable and it worked really well.

Is there any updates on the shared user access history or log?

Ah ok so there is still a chance that a person event can be left out even with heavy restrictions of motion and zones, if you get unlucky with a random motions within the 5 minute cool down. Was hoping this was not the case but will have to revert back to my old settings. I don’t see this helping too much for free users who has issue of high winds or high motions because they have to set high restrictions to mitigate all the false detections because any motion with high restrictions that are captured are important for those people, unless if you can have an option to just record people and ignore all events, instead of record all motion with people included because that 5 minute cool down is killer for people with high traffic.

Me, too! Let’s pool our purchasing power and demand the bro discount.

Shout out to the volunteer Mods & Mavens and regular peeps from the community supporting this action. It makes me tired just appreciating you!

“Compared to FAT32, which supports a maximum file size of 4GB and volume size of 32GB on Windows format, 2TB on other operating systems, and 16TB on certain theoretical applications, exFAT supports a maximum file size of 16 exabytes while storing file size references in eight bytes instead of four bytes. These characteristics make it ideal for storing large files, recording high-quality video, and formatting high-capacity flash memory devices. Note that the SD Association has adapted it as a default file system for the high-capacity SDXC cards.” ~ source

exFAT is susceptible to corrupting an entire flash card in cases of crashes due to power failure or other failures to correctly read/write. The same is true of FAT32, but not as much.

" An extraordinarily large unit of digital data, one Exabyte (EB) is equal to 1,000 Petabytes or one billion gigabytes (GB). Some technologists have estimated that all the words ever spoken by mankind would be equal to five Exabytes." ~ source

I think it’s a bit disingenuous to frame this as you “giving person detection” when you are in fact taking away 12 second cloud storage, a major selling point to your cameras and forcing users to opt in and get a hard sale to pay for to get it back. This is an extra bitter pill to swallow because the first cameras I bought from you guys also came with person detection and again, you took that away and wanted me to again, opt back in and get a sales pitch to contribute. What is this, a charity?

I get it, cloud storage costs you guys money, but that was your business model! I didn’t pick it, you guys did If I wanted to pay a subscription, I would have gone with Ring or Nest. I’m sorry, their products may cost more (although they have come down a lot in the last year), but they are established and work. I chose you because I don’t want to pay for a subscription and I like local storage and am ok with tinkering. Now I’m not sure if it’s safe to buy anymore cameras if they won’t come with cloud storage without paying.

If I may make a couple of suggestions, your SD card reader has just been terrible. I’m glad it’s getting an update but I don’t think it’s enough. It’s impossible to find anything on there without using the cloud storage as a rough guide. Also, people you share a camera with don’t have access to it and we can’t share an account so this will essentially leave all the shared users in the dark. All they get is a live view now. That is a deal-breaker for families where the primary holder shares the account with the rest of the family. At least with 12 seconds, it was something.

I really hope that instead of keep bringing new features, you work on existing ones. If you fix the SD card problems, then not having cloud recording will be a viable solution.

I just have to make a funny nerdy comment on why this is...feel free to skip this unimportant dropdown though

It’s the hardware version of the blue screen of death!

This is particularly funny because exFAT was designed almost solely by Microsoft (who still owns patents on several parts of it’s design despite finally publishing its specification in 2019)…

FAT32 on the other hand was only partially developed by Microsoft and partially by Caldera…so it still has the blue screen of death, but not as often as the one fully developed by Microsoft! That’s just too rich…

Poor Microsoft will never live that down…at least not from us nerds…
(Full disclosure, 3 of by brothers had high paying jobs at Microsoft for a while, so I have to take opportunities to raz them about it just for fun)
