V4 camera, recording failed when recording from playback

Excellent point. Maybe I’m just thrown because every time I see @TequilaSunrise’s username that Eagles song starts playing in my head.

My one brand new grey v4 is having same issue as reported above (receive error when trying to record from SD video playback but can record live and can download picture/still to device with no issues). I’m on a pixel 7, and the v4 is the newest edition to a mixed Wyze network of v2, v3, OG, various plugs, bulbs and strip lights, etc.

One variable that might be significant here that I don’t think anyone has brought up (apologies if I missed it) is the size of the SD card being used. I picked up the v4 because I wanted to use a much larger card for continuous recording. The 128 card being used works great in all the other Wyze ways (I’ve cleared it out twice this far as it approached being full using SD card reformat).

So I wonder if the size of the card matters for this particular issue?

I use 256GB cards in the v4 and can record playback from the SD but I am using iOS.

I have 128 and 256 GB Samsung Pro Endurance cards in my V4s - and I can’t record any playbacks from any of them (the same cards that worked great on my V3s). And yup,… I’ve been using Android.

I am also using the Samsung Pro Endurance cards in all off my V3, V3Pro and V4 cameras. Must be an Android issue?

No issue here on Android 14, v4 and 128GB.

I’m going to pull the 128gb card and reformat it as exFAT (again) and see if that makes a difference. I’ll also try a 32gb formatted FAT32 just for kicks. If the new Wyze app works on my older iPhone I can see if that makes a difference.

If an official Wyze support tech hasn’t chimed in by then, maybe I’ll try changing the subject matter of the video recordings - I will be super disappointed if it turns out that Wyze set an artificial total recording time upper limit when recording SD playbacks of cats doing cat stuff.

Good luck. I usually just format within the cam, using the app.

Hopefully someone will have a better solution.

The native SD formatter inside the Wyze camera is fine for erasing the SD card for immediate reuse but for every Wyze camera I’ve ever owned (even the v2 webcam alternate COVID firmware) develops an odd behavior (eg. videos record in double speed, record as pink or blue-tinted video art, or won’t reformat the SD) it makes a significant difference to totally reformat (and sometimes physically clean) the SD using a computer running software that can fix or reformat an SD card like DiskUtility (diskutil from the command line) or SD Card Formatter on MacOS or equivalents in Win or Linux.

Very interesting. I never had any issues with my 8 cams as far as internal formatting. Could be luck, I guess.

If I have the card out of thee camera I use this program.

Tried reformating a 128GB Samsung card with the SD Card formatter. Then I installed it in a V4 and ran a short timelapse. I can download the time lapse OK by WiFi, I can view the full time recording on the SD card in the camera…but I’m still unable to record clips rom the card !! “Recording failed with error: Recorded Empty File. Deleted”.

I can download the recorded clips from my V4 256GB Samsung SD card. I just did this short one. The files are large so I have to make them short to post here, they need to be <5.5MB which is hard to do with the V4. this one is 3.28 MB. Using iPhone SE2020,
iOS 17.6.1. iOS app 2.50.9

?? Did you give your device permission to load WYZE app media to your Media Album?

I think that’s a good question to ask, but I don’t think it’s the issue here, as described in an earlier post:

Here’s something interesting. On my Android systems, the Wyze app is only requesting permission for “media” access only but NOT for “files” access. if the app manifest for android installations doesn’t ask, I can’t grant permission for file accesss. Do other people see this ie. is it the same for everyone?

I’m not even seeing “files” in the list.

  • On an Android 10 device running the Wyze v3x app, the app has permissions allowed for Location, Microphone, and Storage.
  • On an Android 13 device running the Wyze v2.5x app, the app has permissions allowed for many other things, the most relevant of which is Photos and videos.

I haven’t been able to replicate the issue described in this topic, though, and I’m not (yet) convinced that it’s related to permissions. :man_shrugging:

I’m having the same issue on my V4. They replaced the camera and it still won’t record back from the SD card. The 2 other V3 work fine.

Welcome to the Forum, @lljeska909!

I still haven’t been able to replicate this issue. I just tried again on a phone running Motorola’s variant of Android 10 with Wyze app v3.0.5.558 recording from microSD playback on a Cam v4 with current firmware. I haven’t yet updated the app past v3.0.5 because of problems I’ve read about with the v3.1 app.

I’m puzzled about why this is happening, and I hope Wyze is getting plenty of logs and Support tickets about this issue to bring it to their attention.

I just tried my iPad using iOS 3.1.0.6 and it downloaded a 25 second video I recorded from a 256GB card.

Unless I’ve missed it, I don’t recall seeing any iOS users reporting this particular issue. Maybe it’s specific to Android. That probably seems about right, since some of the Wyze app issues I’ve read about in the past have been limited to iOS users.
