Great. Now wife says I have to lock the dog in every night. Oh well.

That might make the skunk more likely to come around more often. They will often avoid houses if they believe a predator is likely there. Locking the dog outside instead of inside might make the skunk go elsewhere before it decides your property is a good safe one to frequent.
