Can anyone tell me how to install tinycam on ubuntu?
I have been using it with windows subsystem for android and love it but Microsoft is dropping WSA in March so I need an alternative since windows subsytem for linux is still available I thought that would be my best option
I was under the impression that WSA will still work, you just won’t be able to install it after march, but I may have that wrong.
Correct. It is being deprecated, meaning they plan to just end support in the Amazon store will no longer be available. It is unclear for sure whether or not side loading will still be possible, but there is a lot of speculation that side loading won’t be allowed anymore either. Only currently installed apps will be able to stay working.
Now, having said that, I believe the best option after WSA will be to use another kind of Android emulator such as BlueStacks or Android Studio And then install the Wyze app on one of those
I actually got it through the google play store but I was under the impression the app depended on the store to run properly. definitely for updates
You installed the Google Play store on WSA? Impressive. I saw some walkthroughs to do it, but it looked like a lot of extra work. Yeah, from What I understand, the installed app should continue to work, but like you said it definitely won’t get any updates. Best option is probably an Android emulator after WSA is deprecated. It’s too bad Microsoft and Google didn’t just cooperate with each other. WSA had such huge potential. The only reason they think people didn’t use it very much is because they didn’t allow Google Play on it. Of course, most people didn’t use it very much when the only thing they officially allowed were games from the Amazon store. What a joke.
Yes it was quite difficult getting Google play to work on it but well worth it. I was surprised to see microsoft dropped it when they continue to support linux. Your right it really would not have been worth it had I only had the Amazon store. My problem is my experience is 45 years with PC’s and windows. I am a complete moron when it comes to linux. Dos I can handle easily windows no problem, it’s kinda dumb I never got into linux since it’s really been around as long as I have
Heh, I relate to that. I have Advanced Dos and Advanced Windows certifications, but I don’t know my way around Linux either. I’ve poked around in it a few times such as installing Kali Linux for a few days to see if I can hack my own network, and I installed Ubuntu as a virtual machine on a mini-PC so I could run a bunch of docker containers…but I had to use some LLM AI’s to tell me what commands to enter in the command line to do half the stuff I wanted to do. I am definitely insecure with my Linux skills and can only do things by having an AI translate my written intent into instructions I can follow and ask clarifications on.
What about virtualization? Would running an Android VM in something like VirtualBox be an option?
I’m just tossin’ that out there. It’s not something I’ve done, but I’ve been curious about it. My current solution is to connect my phone via USB to my PC (usually I’m logged in using Ubuntu) and then controlling it in its own window with scrcpy. That’s more of a screen mirroring thing, though, not really a “run the Wyze app on the PC” thing.
I’m 71 years old retired ran my own PC consulting business for the last 40 od years and can’t tear myself away from my PC, I hate the fact that all these decent and cheap security cameras only work on phone apps. to run security cameras that are made to be viewed on windows ya have to buy a considerably more expensive camera. These Wyze cams I got are great but I have 2 27" UHD monitors connected to my PC where I sit basically 24 7. Having the cameras on my left screen is very convenient for me and I don’t want to lose it just cause Microsoft has their thumb up their ass. I actually don’t use the WYZE app except on my phone. On the PC I use Tinycam because it allows , me to see all my cameras tiled But Tinycam too requires google play.
BTW My PC I9 64gigs of ram terrabyte ssd plus terrabyte sata drive NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2060 Super Video adapter
Yes I’m trying to avoid the phone. It’s nice for it’s portability but prefer my camera on my 27"screen using tinycam to tile the cameras. As to locking it into a usb to my phone, I’m really trying to break from my phone. It’s ok in a pinch but my pc is capable of doing so much more
Given the specifications you provided for the PC you’re using, I’m wondering why an Android VM or emulator wouldn’t be an option. I’d imagine your hardware should be able to handle that without any problem.
I agree with Crease, you should really go install Bluestacks or another Android emulator. I’m partial to Android studio which runs on Windows as if it is any Android phone like this:
You can then use the Wyze app or TinyCam on Windows. I do it all the time. I’ve been doing it since 2020…here’s some pictures from way back in 2020 when I started using Bluestacks to use the Wyze App and TinyCam on Windows:
Maybe it’s just the coder in me. I would rather not add something. Sure my computer can easily handle it but I like using the new features of windows and rather tackle the problem. Also I’m old as rocks and water, I prefer using my phone for old fashion things like making calls
I currently do use Tinycam as I mentioned earlier
Yet you’re apparently willing to add an entire operating system.
My 93 year old Dad says that. I find he is using the cell for all sorts of tasks. I am glad he learned to become technical. He wasn’t a coder but can handle Windows 10 and hi-tech devices very well. But then we have choices.
