Thermostat, yes or no to buy?

Looking into purchasing a thermostat and possibly some sensors. I like the fact of scheduling on and off times with specific temps. Plug and play seems simple. App usage tracking could be very helpful for me in tracking amount of heat used in winter. Overall I’m seeing a lot of features that are very intriguing to me. Should I pull the tigger on my shopping cart and get one? Should I get a refurbished one? Is there much of a difference??

@ttrostle,

We’ve had the thermostat installed for a few years. As a basic smart thermostat it has been great. Does it learn over time I don’t think so. But you do have ability fo have multiple daily schedules. It has been through dozens of power/internet outages and has always recovered promptly. Our original furnace did not have a “C” lead. The included adapter solved that issue elegantly. Earlier this year we upgraded to a new furnace and compressor that had a C lead. It took the new configuration fine.

If I wanted to fault it it would be this time of year. The spread between heat and cool is 5 degrees. If you set the heat to 70 degrees it automatically changes cool to 75 degrees and if you set the cool to 72 degrees it changes the heat to 67 degrees. During the summer I change the thermostat to cool only. Works great. During the fall I let it range from 70 to 75 degrees. In about 2 weeks I’ll change it to heat only. I’ve read threads from a long time ago where posters are complaining about the spread and wanted a much tighter range of 3 degrees. I would also like this but I’m speculating that Wyze made a legal decision to limit liability. You don’t want your thermostat chattering, potentially harming the system.

I have also seen a thread or two on this forum where the poster had connection issues. Never seen that.

Is it worth it. It is not a $300 nest learning thermostat. But your talking about $40 - $80. For a basic smart thermostat - - yes.
