New HVAC system installed, They removed Wyze thermostat

Hello everyone,

I had my Wyze thermostat installed for a year or so, my HVAC system pooped the bed (it was known to be on it’s way out) entire new dual fuel system installed with heat pump, Once it gets to 40 degrees it kicks over to propane furnace.

Installers removed the wyze thermostat and installed a basic Honeywell. They told me the Wyze would not support the new system. I have had nothing but issues with the “smart” features of Honeywell and am trying to see if I can put the Wyze thermostat back on.

After talking to a few HVAC installers, basically I was told they usually always say to go away from Wyze/Nest etc because they don’t like dealing with their set ups/customer support etc so they go with what they are trained on and know. (regardless if this is true or universal) I am looking to see if someone can help.

The App’s install says it will work but tells me to leave 2 wires off. I find this to be a little worrisome. Am I good to move forward or should I find a new Thermostat that will work with my system. Thanks in advance.

Looks like the 2 “S” wires are for temperature sensors.

Can you imagine the extra training for a HVAC tech to learn all of the different add-ons in addition to installing HVAC?

Maybe someday.

I use the standard non-programable Honeywell on my AC. I like simple.

Complexity can be nice, though.

What HVAC System did you get? My Son got one which required its own T-Stat as it communicates with the Compressor. They techs can control things from the outside as well. I believe, this type of setup is not compatible as a specific T-Stat is required.

However, I am not an HVAC Tech, but do dabble a bit.

@speadie might be able to shed some light here.

This is what the paperwork says.

Ducane AHRI Matching 4AC17L Air Conditioner, 80G1E gas furnace.

Upgraded 80G1E 80% Single stage furance to 98G1E96% single stage hybrid
upgrade 4AC17L to4HP17L

Notes says installed outdoor temperature sensor. Must bring in low voltagetask with 2 low voltage wires for the sensor which is what those “s” wires are.

I have a split unit. But I have had excellent luck with this Mysa unit. It connect IF or RF, maybe, to my A/C. And then the base connects to WiFi. It can be programmed and also controlled via Alexa. My A/C does not have a wired thermostat, so Wyze not an option I wanted to try. There’s lots of these units, not just Mysa.

The wyze doesn’t really have an option to connect an external temperature sensor, which means that it might run your heatpump outside of the recommended temperatures.

You might be able to use the wyze safety, if you disconnect the Y wire when it is colder than 40 outside. Otherwise, you might damage your heat pump,

Thank you very much, Sounds like Wyze thermostat is going to end up on Market place since I cannot use it. We did enjoy it while it lasted.

I had a complete Trane unit installed a few years ago. They left my Nest thermostat alone because it is a simple system.
