Swimming Pool Monitoring

Is AI monitoring a possibility for swimming pool security? For example: Camera is aimed to swimming pool. AI detects motion, anything from a frog jumped in, a pool float, or person disturbed the water. Or works in conjunction with a motion sensor to record video, send notification, when water is disturbed.

A little correction here, the CAMERA detects motion that breaks the thresholds of your sensitivity and detection settings. Once this occurs, the event videos is uploaded to the cloud where it is analyzed by the AI if you have a Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite license associated with the camera. The AI then attempts to recognize objects in frame to notify you of. The AI can detect people, packages pets and vehicles. The detected motion isn’t necessarily the recognized objects. The recognized object detection works if the object is stationary or moving.

of the things you mentioned, I think the AI wound recognize people. Maybe detect the frog as a pet. But I haven’t seen that yet. Lol.

I have a swimming pool that is within a good view of 4 of my 40+ cameras. 2 of the cameras are basically dedicated to just watching the pool so it will alert me when a person is detected in or near the pool.

A few insights on this:

Without cam, plus, most of the cameras can only detect motion and will constantly spam you with notifications because they’re constantly waves on the pool and the light and shadows dance 24/7 and there will be a 5-minute cooldown between each, so it might miss some important ones.

There are some cameras with local AI detections such as my favorite, the Floodlight Pro.

Personally, because of the constant movement of the water, I generally recommend Cam Plus for cameras watching a pool. It can warn you when a person approaches near the pool so you’ll know if you need to watch/supervise. I have it so that any person seen in or near my pool causes an announcement on some of my Google and Alexa speakers, and also sends me a push notification.

I will say that the father away the camera is from the, the less accurate the detections become for a person who has half their body submerged in water. The closer it is to the pool, the more accurate the detections, and the more able it is to tell it’s a person even if parts of their body get obscured by submersion in the water. Also, Cam Plus is more accurate than than the local AI (ie: that is included in the FLPro).

If you have a fence and gate surrounding any entrance to or from the pool, consider putting a contact sensor on the gate as well, so that you can get alerted anytime the gate opens and closes. This is a really good and accurate way to get a clear alert that somebody is doing something near the pool before they even get in there. I actually use wyze contact sensors for my pool gate, I just bought an outdoor cover for them off of etsy, and then mounted them to the gate and they work great. I have it so that if any gate is opened, it broadcasts to my Google and Alexa speakers and a notification to my phone “Pool gate Opened.” Then I go look on my cameras to see if it was adults or minors and if I should supervise.

Works great IMO.

Hello,

I feel I may be able to provide some special insight to your question as I am a pool professional. Wyze is absolutely capable of monitoring your pool to alert you if a person enters the cameras view. (While the cam has internet and power)

If you are concerned about someone falling in the pool please see below:

My professional recommended if you are worried about someone falling in your camera would be to install a pool wake monitoring alarm. You can set a weight parameter on the device to detect if something enters the pool over a weight limit. These alarms are quite loud and are sure to get your attention or a close neighbors attention. They are battery powered as well. You can Velcro it to your pool coping for easy install and removal when you’re ready to use the pool.

From what I understand
the Camereye service was built specifically for this application. If I remember correctly they have an alert for a small child without an adult in the pool area which I find interesting.

I love Wyze, but when it comes to the possibility of someone drowning a few extra cautious steps can’t hurt.

Here is something to look into.

You have to remember that this is a $35 camera. For what it does, it is great. I wouldn’t rely on it to save a life.

I caught an iguana on video taking a high-dive off of a tree into my pool. It was a V2 cam at the time. Now I have a V3 in its place.

That’s hilarious. At first I thought he fell on accident, but after watching several times I’m fairly sure he did it on purpose. So funny.

I believe you are correct. It was a hot day.

I love how the cam catches action and records a couple minutes to the start before action occurs. It is amazing to watch palm fronds fall for a second or two before they do actually fall. I believe the Iguana catch was amazing.

I tested this out and believe this will work for the application. Set up a rule, “when person detected” on “pool camera” and detection zone set for pool only, then: “play siren on indoor camera.” Can disable detection when I am on pool duty and re-enable when I am away. Also can set up notification to my phone or Alexa devices. (Also I may take advantage of this rule for other cameras on my property while on vacation or away. I can’t imagine wanting to continue breaking into a house when an alarm goes off as soon as you enter the back yard.)

Yes, I have seen the $400 pool alarms and the bad reviews that come with them. And yes, this is a $34 camera as others have mentioned. Other companies make motion detection sensors or cameras for this application. I hope Wyze enters the arena with a product especially meant for this purpose. I would definitely consider it as their other devices have proven reliable.
