The only Wyze device I own is the plug you helped me program successfully. My intent is to replace my Ring doorbell with Wyze cams but I’m waiting for my electrician. Unfortunately, my Netgear modem/router is failing so I’ve rented a Gateway from Xfinity. It has a fan that runs constantly and drives me crazy. In reading posts to the forum that are linked in the Friday newsletter I have become aware of the Wyze routers. Pretty pricey for me since I believe I still need a modem. I wanted to ask a question about what modems are recommended but don’t really see how to ask on the forum, so I’ve reached out to you. Perhaps you can make a recommendation or help me properly post a question. I just don’t know enough to ask an intelligent question or where to post it! Best wishes. Trudy
Unfortunately, I am far from familiar with what used to be called “modems”. I have been on Fiber Optic for some time and my ISP provides the Optical Network Terminal (aka modem). All I provide is the WiFi Router to plug into it. I have also never dealt with Xfinity.
What you choose will depend on what type of Xfinity service you have (cable or fiber) and what Xfinity allows. If they will provide the Modem and you buy the WiFi router, that is easiest. If you have to buy both seperate, the Modem has to be compatible to their specs. They should have a list of compatible modems. If you are going to get an all in one (modem\Wifi combo), again they will have to confirm compatibility.
If you go with seperate boxes, here is a good discussion about WiFi Routers that work good with Wyze gear. If you have questions about any of them, jump in and ask questions. There is a user in that thread with Xfinity.
I believe the other Mavens may have experience with Xfinity. With your permission, I would like to invite them into this DM so they can weigh in with more helpful info if they have it.
Sounds like you have a great setup. No fibre optics in this neck of the woods; cable. Thanks so much!

Which WiFi router best for Wyze cams? Cameras
I need to buy a new WiFi router to replace my Netgear WNDR4300. I guess there are certain WiFi routers that work better with Wyze cams than others for some odd reason… at least, I have read some conversations in this forum where people have reported connectivity problems and have been told that it’s probably the fault of their router and not the cam. All of my Wyze cams were purchased this year (spent a LOT of money on Wyze stuff to decidedly mixed results) and have the latest released firmwar…

Do you mind if I invite the other Mavens in to get their perspective? The team may have experience and recommendations I don’t.
Sure. That would be great. The thread you linked was helpful. I’m looking at the Asus router that was found reliable and asking Xfinity if they have a basic modem. The gateway has to go! I switched from a desktop to laptops years ago because fan noise drives me nuts!

I have Xfinity cable internet. I have always used a separate router and modem and not used Xfinity’s gear. Before Wyze came out with the Pro router, I was using an ASUS RT-AX88U AX6000 Router. It worked ok, but had trouble reaching some areas of my home. I’m now using the Wyze Mesh Router Pro which is working flawlessly.
I am on an 800/20 Mbps plan with Xfinity and using a Motorola MB7621 Cable Modem which is also working flawlessly.
Here is Xfinity’s page on using third party modems: Using Approved Third-Party Equipment for Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Voice - Xfinity Support
This links to another page which gives specific recommendations for third party modems based on the speed of your Xfinity plan: Device Info - Xfinity
I recommend never renting the equipment from Xfinity. The modem I’m using is currently $80 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-Approved-Comcast-Spectrum-Downloads/dp/B08921BW99?keywords=Motorola+MB7621&qid=1693657559&sr=8-2. The payback is under a year when compared to Xfinity’s rental fees. In ten years, I’ve had to upgrade my modem once when I increased my internet plan’s speed.

I’ve always had great luck buying used everything until I bought my current Netgear combo which was sold by Amazon Warehouse. After the 30 return period, I began having problems so I’m hesitant about purchasing the unit you found despite my limited budget needs. Is the Motorola MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gig Cable Modem the newer model?.
And yes, you are welcome to share this. I really have difficulty finding the info I need on the Wyze site whether shopping or seeking help and wanting to ask a question. For instance, nothing about the headings of products gave me a clue of where to find routers!
As for the Wyze Mesh router, I believe the smaller unit will be adequate; it is all I can afford anyway!
Thanks!

I have had Xfinity cable internet for 20 years and I have always ran my own equipment , a separate modem and router, currently running a Netgear modem and an Asus router.
I never wanted anything to do with Comcast’s crappy equipment
Yeah I definitely recommend doing like Loki does:
- Get your own Cable Modem.
- Get a separate router.
I had a bad experience trying to use The modem and Router/gateway that Xfinity wanted to rent to me. Getting my own modem and a separate router gave me a much better experience.
I’m just renting the Gateway for a few days. I owned a Netgear combo that was dying. This time I’m getting separate units, a Motorola modem and the smaller Wyze router.
I normally don’t like using Comcast equipment, but got an XB7 gateway for free. It actually works great with my Wyze cameras and other IoTs. There is a newer XB8 available. I still have my Arris cable modem and Linksys access point ready to put back in service if Comcast adjusts my free price or my opinion changes.
I believe that keeping this Gateway would be $30/mo but even if it was free I would not keep it. The fan noise is intolerable. Years ago I switched to laptop computers because they were quiet; perhaps not everyone finds this problematic, but I’m not one of them.
dswwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Sorry Cat walked on keyboard
I have never had a combination unit to compare I just always knew as general rule separates are better and another rule I like go by is don’t skimp on the router get the best you can afford it is the heart of the system
For some of us it’s" too soon old, too late smart"!
I here ya on that buddy , not a fan of upgrade or be left behind
Loki, Slayslayer, carverofchoice When both the router and modem arrived in used condition (both packages had been opened and were missing guides, etc), I felt a sense of foreboding, and right I was. Ultimately I was able to activate the Motorola modem though it took redoing it with Xfinity support, but the Wyze router did not work.
So here’s the catch 22. My cell phone is dependent on a wifi connection yet I needed to use it to set up the Wyze router, which I needed to provide the wireless connection so that I could use my cellphone.
I have no idea of the router is defective. I have no way to check. I’m exhausted and discouraged and just spent eons on the phone to reconnect the Xfinity Gateway! Back to square one and suddenly thinking that a combo modem/router is not so bad after all.
where do you order from? wyze directly? amazon? seems like you are pretty spot on for how to spot used gear, that is interesting…
carverofchoice, Loki, SlabSlayer See my previous post in this thread. It occurred to me that with the Xfinity Gateway modem working properly, I could connect the Wyze router and set it up. I did all the steps, including unplugging everything and starting from scratch. The app says it cannot find the bluetooth signal or connection, yet the app communicates with my plug without any problems. My conclusion is that Amazon sent me a defective router. Do you agree?
