Hi all. I’m just getting started with Wyze devices–I’ve set up a couple of bulbs (white) and a Wyze plug–and this is my first post.
I have ordered more plugs, one for my modem (ATT fiber) and one for my firewall/router (Firewalla). I have a question the answer to which I’ve searched the forum for but not found. That doesn’t mean the answer’s not here, just that I haven’t correctly formulated the question, which is: Does the Wyze plug have a built-in, automatic-power-cycle function that power-cycles the plug itself? I’ll be away from home for an extended period and want to be able to remotely reset my modem and router via power cycling the Wyze plugs they’ll be plugged into. This presents a problem because once I turn the Wyze plug off, the connected modem or router will be turned off, and I will no longer be able to remotely connect to the Wyze plug. It would be useful if I could simply click a “power-cycle-plug” box and have the plug turn itself off and then a few seconds later turn itself back on.
No. That’s the short answer, at least as I currently understand the Wyze Plugs’ capabilities.
I’d suggest searching for this: #wishlist #plug power cycle. You can click this link to see the results of that search, which should turn up several Wishlist topics where this and similar features have been requested. With Wishlist topics, you can visit to tap or click the Vote button above the initial post to show support for the idea and also share your use cases in the comments as a reply.
One possibility with newer Wyze Plugs (not the originals) is setting Local Schedules to power the Plug(s) on at the desired times, and then if you remotely turn that plug off it should turn back on based on the schedule you set, because Local Schedules don’t require an active Internet connection to run (unlike Schedule-type Automations). If you’re away from the router and modem’s location but their Internet connection is up so that you’re able to access the particular Plug in the app at a given time, then you could potentially do that to set a Local Schedule “ON” time for a few minutes into the future and then turn off the Plug (thus killing its Internet connection) and then wait. That doesn’t give you the immediate on/off that you’re seeking, though, and as far as I know Wyze still doesn’t offer anything like that.
If this is a feature you really need, then you’re probably better off looking for other smart plug/switch solutions. I believe @habib really likes his Keep Connect Router Rebooter for doing the kind of thing you’re seeking, and there are probably similar solutions in the marketplace if you look.
You’re welcome. I think doing a Local Schedule on a Plug is a reasonable work-around if you want to stay within the Wyze ecosystem, but if remote power cycles for that location’s Internet connection are something you think you may need to do frequently and at will (not on a regular schedule), then I’d probably spend some time investigating alternative solutions.
I appreciate your taking time to respond. I don’t anticipate needing to do it frequently–both my ATT fiber and the Firewalla are stable–but I’ll be thousands of miles away for several months and want to be prepared for exigencies. I’ve just looked at the ConnectSense and Keep Connect offerings. A little spendy. I have to think about how much I need them. An alternative is to set up easy-access switches and train a neighbor to use them.
Good idea. Many of us do something like that. But we don’t like the stability of Wyze plugs and don’t use them. You need a plug that stores the schedule locally. I like the Sonoff S31. Get them on Amazon. They have several features. Like “Last state”, which if you lose power, they will come back to "on, off, or “last state” (meaning whatever it was doing. They also have a version called S31Lite, which captures and you can see power usage.
Thanks Sam_Bam. The most-current version of the Wyze plug can store a local schedule. I can kluge a power-cycle by scheduling an off-on within a couple of minutes. It’s an unnecessarily-complicated workaround compared to a simple “power-cycle me” option (plus I have to remember to “deschedule” it). As to stability, the jury’s out. My plug turns itself off for no reason.
FWIW, I’ve been using the original Plugs (they don’t have a Local Schedule feature; I think at least two other iterations have been released in the meantime) since 2019. Those were actually my first Wyze devices, and I still use them, controlled mostly via Google Home, including some Routines that run on schedules. Aside from an occasional server-side glitch (there was one last summer that seemed to last a few days for some affected users), I’ve found them to be stable and reliable. I’ve also had good results with Plug Outdoor (which does have Local Schedules).
I use non-Wyze smart Wi-Fi plugs, as well, and I completely understand why some users like to choose a different brand for power-cycling their Wyze cameras. That’s another reason I like centralizing control in something like Google Home where I can.
