Remote Fix for Thermostat "Device Offline"

I installed a Wyze thermostat at my cottage to remotely control and monitor the furnace on Jan 26 2025. It worked for a week after installation with me on-site but them I had to return to the city.

The first day in the city I was able to access the thermostat.
The evening of the second day I got the dreaded “Device Offline” as documented in Topic Thermostat offline repeatedly - Home - Wyze Forum

I also have 4 OG cameras installed in March 2024 on the cottage exterior. The furthest camera is 100ft away from the modem and has endured temps below -20°C. These cameras have NEVER disconnected.

My ISP is Bell Canada and they provide 2 tools:

  • MyBell website accessed via Browser - has function to reboot the modem.
  • Bell WiFi Phone app
    • View Wifi and device connected status.
    • App also allows any device’s WiFi access to be paused.

The phone app showed the thermostat connected with “excellent signal”.
Note that Bell WiFi app shows Thermostat as a Cam and I used Mac ID to identify it.

After some experimenting I was able to get the thermostat back online by:

  1. Use Bell WiFi App to pause WiFi on all 4 Cams + Thermostat
  2. Use MyBell website to Reboot modem
  3. Use Bell WiFi App to Un-Pause Thermostat
    • After about 10 seconds the Thermostat was back online
  4. Use Bell WiFi App to Un-Pause the 4 Cams

I assume that this would also work if I was on-site with the thermostat.

As noted by others, when the thermostat goes offline it continues to work the furnace. It was offline for about 12 hours and when it came back online I could see that there was no drop in room temperature.

Hope this helps others to remotely get their thermostats back online.

Note that this is not a Wyze only problem. Internet searches show that Ecobee thermostats also go offline.

I posted a couple of times earlier in this forum as I’ve had the same problem. My first unit went out of warranty so I was out of luck on that. Eventually (and stupidly) I decided to get another one thinking the HW problems might have been fixed in more recent versions. I purchased it from Wyze directly so I would have the solid 1 year warranty. Sure enough, it had the same problem. Since it was at a remote location it took me more than 3 months to file the return. I asked for a refund and the warranty terms say they may give a refund or gift card (or unit replacement) at their sole option. I figured they might take into account that I’m a loyal customer with more than 2 dozen Wyze devices and an unlimited plan plus I had the history with the earlier non-working thermostat. The response was that they could only give me a gift card for more Wyze products and are “unable” to issue a refund. Their reps kept insisting that “at our sole option” means the same thing as “unable”. Heck if they’d just be honest about it I’d feel better. I still like their cameras but I’m getting soured on Wyze based on this experience.

Bottom line, whatever else you have with Wyze, don’t buy their thermostat, it’s junk.
