Recent App UI Changes

We recently made some UI changes in the app, and users have asked questions about how it works now. We sent an email out over the weekend, but some may not have seen it, so I am also posting it here in case it helps anyone.

Hi friend,

We’ve made some updates to the Wyze app to give it a fresh look and make things easier to use. If you’re using a Cam v3 with a microSD card, all the features you know and love are still here**.** They’ve just moved to new spots.

Here’s a quick guide to what’s updated:

Playback button: The “View Playback” button has been renamed “SD Card” and the icon can be found in the middle of your screen.

View SD Card Events: Once in the “SD Card” screen, tap on the bubbles of the timeline to jump to the beginning of an event.

SD Card Playback Controls: In the “SD Card” screen, tap on the livestream window to bring up the control menu. Now you can jump forward or backward 30 seconds.

Everything works like before; we’ve just refreshed the layout for a better user experience.

We hope this helps you get around the updated app more smoothly. If you have any feedback for our team on this update, please share in this survey.

Thank you for being part of the Wyze community,

Wyze Team

Thank you for posting this! :folded_hands:

So many new topics have been created recently about these very Cam v3 UI issues that I appreciate having an official Forum resource to point users toward—especially new Forum users who may be long-time product users of older Wyze Cam models. :man_bowing:

I love most of the updates, but I’m not a fan of the auto-hiding playback controls on top of the video when there’s plenty of other real estate. Just because major video streaming apps do it, doesn’t mean it’s a good user experience.

Wyze is a proponent of the “Easter Egg” school of UI design. Nothing brings out the interest of the users than having to hunt and peck while trying to use the app.

I appreciate that a user survey is included here, as well, and I hope that yields useful feedback for the design team. When viewing that on a desktop PC, the example images on the first page seem like they could be larger and perhaps annotated to illustrate recent changes. Otherwise, some users might not appreciate the differences.

Also, in the left screenshot on the survey site (which appears to be the source for the first image in the post above), it looks like it’s showing a Cam v3…with a battery gauge in the upper-left corner?

As long as the designers are monkeying with the UI, please nudge them to review and improve the use of color contrast throughout the app, particularly when Theme is set to Dark (or using System Default when the OS is set to use a dark theme). This is a Cam Pan v3 while in Waypoint edit mode, and the text color of the note about reordering Waypoints (dark grey on a dark background) is abysmal:

This needs to be changed in Cam Pan v4’s UI, too, and I imagine plenty of other usability/visibility improvements could be made. I know I’ve commented about the need for the app to make better use of color contrast elsewhere here in the Forum in the past—and I know other users have, too—and I appreciate @K6CCC for reminding me about this again today.

Suggestions I offered on a Wyze UI survey recently:

  • Restore bit rate display to Live View screen
  • Make control overlay persistent on the SD card screen via a long press toggle or similar
  • Maintain zoom level when advancing 30 seconds or previous/next on SD card screen
  • Maintain access to control overlay when scrubbing the timeline on the SD card:
    If you drop the cursor on an empty space, there are no controls available;
you must scrub onto a recorded segment to see them

This isn’t something that I use, but I’ve seen a lot of complaints about that one.

Yep. Also, before, if you tapped ‘30 seconds’ repeatedly (and there was an empty segment because you record SD Events vs Continuous) you could continue tapping until the next recorded segment appeared. Not so now. Gotta scrub to next recorded segment first, like in my last bullet point above.

/edit

A repeated tap on ‘30 seconds’ takes twice as many taps to effect what you could do before but it’s tolerable and good exercise. Tap fast, don’t move your finger between taps

Tap - overlay appears… Tap - advances/overlay disappears… Tap - overlay appears… etc

Update.

B 1: Please :backhand_index_pointing_down:

B 2: Would still be good but see /edit added in comment just above
B 3: Fixed!
B 4: Please. On the cloud clip Events timeline, if you drop the cursor on an empty space between Events, it snaps-to the next Event (as it does also in the Monitoring tab Multi-Cam Timeline. So, make SD Events consistent with these and we’re golden.

B4 /edit: Something else it does now I hadn’t noticed which may be new – when an SD Event concludes, it jumps to the next SD Event on the timeline automatically.

I’m still running some Cam Pan v1s. Why can’t the UI in the app look the same as the other Cam Pans? I realize that some features might be different, but the overall geometry should be the same.
