Plug to automatically or manually cycle power

A new idea (I think)
Can we have a reset on the plug

Reason. I want to plug I. My WiFi modem
Of course if I turn off my modem. I will not have WiFi to turn the modem back on

So I would like a reset or cycle power option or rule that will turn power off and return power after some amount of time

@habib recently posted about experience with a product that does just that. I have a vague recollection of someone else on the Forum suggesting other brands of smart plugs that can reset themselves (or be reset?) without a Wi-Fi connection. (I want to say maybe it was @Sam_Bam, but I’m not absolutely positive, and I’m not finding the relevant topic(s) in a quick search.)

I also imagine (but haven’t yet tried this myself) that it’s possible with newer Wyze Plugs (including Plug Outdoor—basically anything but the original Plug, I think—whichever models have Local Schedules) to just set a Local Schedule for the plug to turn ON, but that doesn’t really help you if, say, you want to cut power to the modem now and don’t want to have to wait until whatever reset time you’ve programmed for the Plug to power back on again. Still, I think I’ve read somewhere about someone doing just that because in that particular use case the wait for the overnight reset (via Local Schedule) wasn’t a significant problem. :man_shrugging:

I’m sure if you poke around a bit you’ll likely find other solutions, as well.

What I used to do is use TP Link Kasa plug. They have local schedules stored in the plug. I would create a schedule to turn the power off few minutes in the future and turn power back on after a minute. That will reboot the router.

However I found a much better solution. I bought KeepConnect Router Rebooter.

It is an amazing gadget. It will monitor the internet connection and if for whatever reason the internet is lost it will reboot the router or modem or both depending what you plug into it. Also allows you to remotely reboot by pressing a button in the app as well schedule daily, weekly or monthly resets. The cloud subscription is required for remote reset option. It is only $20 a year and well worth it.

It recently helped me discover that the modem was dying as it was requesting multiple public requests per day, so I had it replaced by my ISP.

Never looked back and I am going to buy another one for my home setup, just to have a piece of mind. The cloud subscription is good for unlimited devices.

I purchased MSNSwitch 2. This will ping and auto-reset your router if pings fail after a certain amount of time. It will send email notification of such events also.

That really looks like an interesting device. I like the Ethernet connectivity, and one of the product photos indicates that the user can select which external domains or IP addresses are pinged/polled. The ability to interact with it via Skype is weird but kind of cool, and I imagine that might be one option for receiving notifications. Thanks for sharing!

There is a single Plug Version of this that has built in Wi-fi. I have one but stopped using it because of a firmware bug that won’t get fixed. I do not recommend the single plug version.
I recommend this two plug version 100%.
