Back in the day (2020) I was enamored with putting the v2’s as far away as I could. So I bought a bunch of long USB A to micro cords of different brands from Amazon, a cheap USB tester and plowed ahead. A few surfaced as good. But as I wrote, they were for V2’s (and eventually V3’s).
Now I’m looking for cables for the power hog V4. Most of the places where I want to put them involve running a cable out a double-hung window that has an aluminum storm window.
The route taken by previous cables:
under the lower inner sash - flat cable
- under the inner storm window, bending the flat cable to run in the groove a bit, then exit the groove to the outside.
I’m running a V4 pan with the abysmally short supplied cable run that route and it seems to be working.
But an extra 6 feet would sure make placement easier.
Anybody using some? If so how about links?
Note - I’ve read several closed threads asking for similar info, I don’t want another work around solution, I’m not rewiring my house, I’m not needing 30’ of cable.
15 feet is the spec, you might be able to get 20 to 30 feet with thick gauge cables. The Pan cams are power hungry and don’t like the voltage sag that comes with running a motor over a long length of thin cable. 5 volts has very little room for error. Even the stationery cams are pretty sensitive and while some have claimed to get them over 30 feet, most have issues.
If you need more distance than that, you need to extend the AC power closer to the cam, or use something like PoE
But it sounds like you may just need 10 to 15 feet in which case even the flat cables should work fine, but try to find one with the thickest gauge wire that you can. All my cams (including Panv3s) are using the stock 6 foot flat cables without issue, most of them going out double hung window sashes like yours, and I don’t see why 10 or even 15 wouldn’t work. 15 might be pushing it if it is very low gauge cable or if it has gotten damaged by opening/closing the windows.
Some discussion of PoE in the ilnk below but there are many other options (and several threads if you search)
Surprised they market that one for the Panv4, that’s pushing it (26 feet assuming you use the included flat cable with it). I have gone 25 or 30 feet once but it was a nice thick round cable and a pretty low power device.
Sounds like OP wants a flat cable which unfortunately maxes out around 30 or 28AWG I think. Though I guess could use the flat cable out the window then a thick extension cable the rest of the way, just seal the connection well. Still would be nervous panning that cam and using the spotlight, speaker, etc at 26 feet.
