Pan cam 3 stopped working when connected to extension USB cable

This camera has worked fine for me for a long long time, since I’ve tried to connect it to the 30 foot USB extension cable, it will not stay connected if I can get it to connect at all! I thought it was a bad cable at first, so I replaced it with another. Same result!
Does it only require a two amp power supply? Or does it require more power for losses in the long Cable?
The power is up, moves all around, resets itself just fine, sometimes connect and then within 15 or 20 seconds BOOM cannot connect.
Help! My back is killing me from standing on the top of ladders trying to re-run and restring these cables, over and over again to try to figure out how to get this thing to work consistently.
I appreciate any suggestions!

(I know this has nothing to do with the iOS, but there was no topic to select that was close!)

Most long USB cables won’t provide enough power. Does the camera work with the original one?

Emirates fine on a short cable, it just was ridiculous all the extension cords I had dragged across my porch to get the front of the house covered. So I saw these nice long USB cables and I said that would be a lot cleaner! Unfortunately too much loss and the camera won’t stay up! I even put in a more powerful power supply up to 3 A and that still didn’t maintain the functionality of the .

30 feet is way way way beyond the spec for USB. The voltage drop will almost certainly cause any USB device to not work properly. Has been discussed in here a few times (a recent thread even). If you use a POE solution with ethernet cable and a USB adapter you can overcome the limitation since it adjusts for cable length and voltage drop.

I bought the cable from Wyze, and My V4 cam is working just fine on one. I believe the pan cam just requires more power.

Wyze sells a 30’ USB cable? Do you have a link? They definitely should not be offering that and I haven’t seen one before. Though there are plenty of brands on amazon selling ones that say “for wyze”, but those are your typical no-name overseas brands that really don’t care if it works well or not.

The pan definitely requires more power especially when the motor is working, but even on your v4 if you turn on the spotlight, try to talk through it, etc you’ll likely see issues. Anything over 15 feet is a roll of the dice (even that can be pushing it with these thin, flat USB cables that don’t really meet the spec).

CORRECTION: I thought I was ordering a WYZE product, but Amazon in their infinite wisdom showed this item when I searched for the WYZE 20 ft USB extension cable. Got me! Grrrrr… I never would have ordered it if I had caught it sooner! It was from [Brand:HCHNH]

They claim this cable is:

Micro USB Camera Extension Cable for Wyze, [2-Pack, 30ft] Power Extension Cord for Wyze Cam V4,V3 V2,Wyze Cam Pan,YI Home Camera,Nest-Cam Indoor,Oculus Go,Netvue,KasaCam,Furbo Dog,Blink

But, obviously it is NOT meeting specs, although it was a round possibly shielded cable, not the typical flat ones. Either way, they are NOT GOOD for these cameras.

They also came with adapters for the PanCam for the 90 degree micro USB end. Faked me out, good!

Yeah someone in another thread bought a 50 footer claiming it was for the Pan with the 90 degree adapter…

I’ve never tried to go beyond 10 feet with a thick (was either 24 or 26 AWG, don’t recall) USB cable, even just for power. USB 2.0 spec allows something like 15 feet, so in theory that should also be the limit for power, but USB 2.0 is only 500mA, where the wyze cams range from 1000 to 2000, so you have to factor that in also. The thinner cables I stick to 6 feet or less.

For whatever it’s worth, Wyze says that their 20′ USB Extension Cable is 18 AWG and compatible with Cam Pan v3. Since it’s just an extension (USB-A male on one end and USB-A female on the other) and they advertise compatibility, that would get you to ~26′ total with the original cable, eh? Seems worth a shot, depending on the application/location, and if it doesn’t work out, then that’s on Wyze.

18 gauge? That’s an extension cord with USB ends slapped on it

20 feet at that thickness should be fine, 26 pushing it but probably still good. There will be a bit of extra loss at the connector between the two cables too but not much.

Of course there is a point where thickness can’t compensate for length (this is getting NSFW), there is an equation to calculate the drop (and sites out there that will do it for you), But when you’re starting with 5.1 or 5.2 typically, and the cam/any usb device really wants no less than 4.8 to 4.9, there isn’t much room to play with.

Maybe I’ll develop and all-in-one POE setup with USB ends, unfortunately it wouldn’t be able to compete price wise with the long extension cables.

Even with only 2 wires in it that must be a fairly thick cable.

That’s just what they say, but their documentation is often inaccurate. Cam Pan v3’s product page says that its power cord is “6"” long.

Yes, that’s the standard cable that comes with the camera. There is an extension for the USB but be careful not to buy cheap imitations from China, as I was faked out into doing. I was ecstatic because of the size of my porch when I found 30 foot USB cables, but The experience is disastrous!

That is exactly what I was about to try next. I might be able to route the cable in such a way that it would still be long enough.
But then again, pushing things a bit. Perhaps with the more powerful power supply it might work with that configuration. Thanks!

Even with the standard 6 foot I occasionally have disconnects. But, the more you push it, the more troubles you have.

That’s unlikely to be power related and more wifi signal quality.

Understood, but I don’t need anything else interrupting the service.
