New Routers, Where's The Cameras?

I have my new router set up but how do I get the cameras to find it?

The SSID/Password is the same as the old router.

Am I going to have to re-install all of the cameras now?

edit: I installed an extra camera I have and it’s working good. So I know the system is set up right

Try power cycling the ones not connected, if you haven’t already…

Well, my suggestions cost you nothing but a few minutes. You do not need to answer these questions here. Just check your work - so to speak.

  1. You said, you used same SSID & Password. Good. That makes a difference. I trust you know for sure, so I won’t ask any more about that.
  2. Did you go into the new router’s settings and select/assign the same subnet as the old one used? You know, 192.168.x.1 Where x is the same new and old? The caemeras might be trying to reconnect using the old subnet’s IP Addresses that is no longer there. If you can, change it to the new one. If you can’t go to #3.
  3. Go back to your cable modem and router. Turn both off. Leave them turned off more than 5 minutes. We want the cable modem to “lose” is assigned addresses and flush its own routering tables. This is a good rule of thumb anytime you have network/WiFi issues. ALWAYS work from the “outside to inside”. Got bot turned off? After at least 5 minutes, turn cable modem back on. Give it at least 3 minutes to boot. You can watch its lights. Should be at least 4 usually 5. Good idea to mark them, so you can recognize progress next time. After “looks like its up”, turn on router. If you have mesh system, after 2 minutes, good idea to walk around checking if they too are up, might have to restart them. (I put my hard to get to nodes on a RF controlled power switch, so I don’t have to physically unplug/plug them in to restart them. Now that you’ve restarted, check those camera. If they still are not up, just power them down, not reset or reinstall them. The router is offering new addresses, they might need a restart to “accept” the new assignment.

How many cameras do you have? I have 5 Wyze v3 cameras so it was not too big of a pain to set them from scratch.

My new router does 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 6 Ghz plus it has an IoT network and separate Guest network. I wanted to rename all of the above with new SSIDs to help me keep them straight.

I can see where having many more Wyze devices will make switching routers more painful.

Here’s an idea, before you reset/reinstall a bunch of devices to “get them on the IoT or Guest” network, rename your main network to something different - i.e., was Blah, so rename if Blah2. Then when you bring up your new IoT or Guest network, give it the “old” name. They won’t know the difference after they “find” a connection again.

Here’s a story for all. Might save someone a headache. I am a “contingency guy”. My back up plan has a back up plan. I practice, I create a problem (with my home network or computers) to test my resiliency. I am a packrat. I have spares for my spares.
My TP-Link network of 150 clients dropped to 85 meg. Then to 18 and 8 meg. Restarted, tried other PCs. tried wire, wireless. Hours. “Even stooped so low as to ask Google AI”, who lead me down rabbit holes. Dragged out the spares. 3 eero nodes, 3 Wyze nodes. shutdown the TP-Link routers. Stood up the eero router system, built it using same name and same subnet as TP-Link. Same problem. What’s different? Not enough. Disconnected cable modem, and TP-Link main. Shutdown eero. (and you can’t have same SSID broadcasting from any other node particularly, different manufacturer). Moved cable modem, and TP-Link to upstairs, disconnected TV and used cable to cable modem, started TP-Link, 600 meg. Next simplest test is segment of physical RG6 from “wall” to cablem modem (downstairs) put everything back. Brought out spare RG6 cable. Problem was “new” (1 year old) RG6. Laid out new RG6 segment and restored TP-Link network. 600+ meg. Hours and never thought to test/replace segment of cable. BUT good news is, I simply shutdown the eero’s. IF needed, I can simply turn off TP-Link and turn on eero’s to test complete mesh. Even left the eero’s sitting next to TP-Link on same surge protectors. The SSID is already prepped, and matches my main. So, easy to test now. The way the universe works, I will never need to test the erro’s to see if the TP-Links were a problem, now that I am easily ready.

Great idea. I am just in the habit of changing my SSID and password everytime i get a new router.

Many of my neighbors keep their SSIDs the same for years and will use their full last name, first names or initials as part of their SSID.

I currently use the initials of all the dogs i have had while living in my current house. I add a 2 at the end for 2.4Ghz band, a 5, a 6, and Dev (which mean Devices. I don’t want my neighbors to know Dev is my IoT network (not that knowing is a big deal).

All of my passwords are at least 24 characters or longer. My Guest network password is short, but I only schedule the Guest network to turn on when I have a gathering.

I guess i enjoy putting lots of thought into my SSIDs each time i get a new router.

How do I change the SSID/Pass in the cameras?

The reason I want to change the SSID in the camera is because I connected to the new _IOT from the router.

It is severely gimped and more like a slide show.

I don’t know how to attach more bandwidth to the _IOT setting

The name of my guest network is “Police Surveillance Van #3”. Funny, though, not many people use it. hmm,

It would make it so I don’t have to take down and re-install the cameras, two of which is over 12 feet off the ground

When I got my new router, I hit the Setup button on each of my five Cam v3 cameras. If you have more than 5 I can see how that becomes tedious.

Do you still have to scan the QR code or does it bypass that step?

Yes, I had to scan the QR code. I believe because I setup the cameras again in my Wyze account it remembered things like Night Vision Off and Rotate 180 degrees.

What’s up with _IOT?

Is it like a guest network that’s gimped compared to the regular setting?

The IOT network that many routers have pre-configured will force the video stream to go out via the internet and then back in to your viewing device, it is totally isolated from your main network and even from other devices on the IOT network (unless you disable the isolation). However that usually doesn’t cause issues, my network has been set up that way (looping through wyze servers for my cams) for years. You can check your router and see if they apply any other restrictions to it (bandwidth, etc). There is no standard, each manufacturer decides what to do. It is basically juat a pre-configured “guest” network, and some may add some additional security or bandwidth limits to it too.

But to answer your original question, your cameras will not auto-reconnect unless the network name and SSID are exactly the same as they were before. You will also want to make sure WPA3 is disabled and channel width on 2.4ghz is set to 20 only.

Most cams other than the OG and some old ones will allow you to change networks right from within the app, but you need both networks online. So you’d need to get the cams up on the main SSID (which has to be the same name and password as your old router), then you can tell them to switch over to the IOT one from within the app.

Ya know…a neighbor has been parking his big van in front of his house, he’s turning into a food van, after I change the network to Police Surveillance Van #4 the other neighbors will be looking at that van with a weary eye LOL

I’m thinking of creating a new network with the new SSID, but when I try to do that I get a message that says “Your rules have reached the maximum”

I’ve been digging around but I can find how to change that rule

I’m getting the feeling that I’m about to brick my whole system for these cameras :confused:

Let’s not forget. Putting out a decoy network name or for fun? Grab any old router you have, and hang it off your existing router via Ethernet. It will pull an address from your existing network. Then use the app or web interface to configure its name. All it has to do is broadcast its name.
