The updates are in this thread, they are aware and looking into it but unable to replicate. Submit a log if you can as that should help.
With so many people having the same issues, I cant imagine it would be difficult to replicate. Out of the box with a brand new v4, I was able to replicate it. I dont have any complex actions, I just have the Wyze cams connected though the Alexa app, and when viewing on the Echo Show with the command, “Alexa show me _____” the problem persists. This is the same for all my Wyze cams which are many.
You wouldn’t think so, but the “engineers” may be outsourced to another country (very likely) and sometimes things get lost in translation and they’re not setting up the test correctly. Who knows, whatever Echo Show device they have (if they even have one, maybe they’re just trying to replicate it with the alexa app hence them asking Jason to ask about that earlier in the thread) might be a different localized software version, language, etc too.
FWIW, Wyze cams are widely sold in America and thus, should be serviced with that in mind.
Also find it hard to believe that Wyze “cannot” replicate a problem that hundreds are experiencing…duh
If some Wyze admins or devs wish to get/test a cheap Echo Show directly from Amazon, there’s a pretty good deal right now:
You can return easily, everybody knows that.
Many/most products made and sold in America are manufactured, supported, and often even developed in other countries. There is simply no way to hit the price point of these cams otherwise.
Every company I’ve worked for (and most of our customers I’ve worked with) outsources development, typically to Wipro or Tata in India, but now more and more to Singapore and Hungary and a handful of others. It is awful to have to deal with. and the funny thing is the only reason it saves money is because the company decides not to improve (or even fix) something due to the cost associated (which previously could have been done by a salaried employee, but now is a capital expense instead of operating expense, and capital expense is a 4-letter word in the corporate world). I argue that if you factor in the brand damage and loss of customer loyalty, it actually costs the company money. But since companies operate in quarters and have a very nearsighted view, some short term VP or CEO got a great bonus for making that current quarter number look great, but totally hosing the long term numbers.
But again, you’re not going to get a $20 camera designed, made, developed, and supported in the US. It takes a $15 an hour worker 5x longer to make a camera than a $3 an hour one overseas. Never mind the high healthcare costs, social security and medicare contributions, risk of unionization, etc etc. American workers are a terrible value compared to just about every other country. Look at Foxconn, the maker of everyone’s beloved iPhones (and many other things). They had to put up nets around their buildings due to the high suicide rate. So not only do their workers have to live on the campus with basically no access to the outside world, work grueling shifts for low pay, but now they can’t even off themselves when they can’t take it anymore. But hey, Apple can make >50% profit margin on the phones and be one of the most valuable companies in the world, so it’s all good.
Sucks, but it is the way it is.
I’m even wondering if the people who can fix this issue (likely in another country) can’t get one due to restrictions, or possibly get ones with different software/languages, possibly haven’t gotten the latest updates, etc. It probably will come down to Wyze employees in the US trying to replicate the issue, then send logs and debugging info over to the developers (or probably set up a teams meeting where the developers can remotely see the issue and try to troubleshoot it that way).
Happening on two V4 and a V3 with two echo show 8 models. I’m thinking about getting rid of those echo shows and just replacing them with two cheap Android Tablets running the cameras in a browser window. Anyone doing that here?
Just install the app on the tablet and use that (browser view would require subscription if you don’t have it, and generally isn’t as good as the app). I know there are several here using tablets and I believe even a few who are using them dedicated for that purpose, even mounted on a wall.
The only drawback is finding a way to have the screen activate when needed and shut off after a certain time (without having to tap it). Off the top of my head, can’t think of any setting that allows that, but there may be some sort of app that will do it. Or if it is a cheap tablet, can just leave it on all the time and know that the screen will probably degrade over time. OLED screens will degrade (and get burn in) faster than LCD, but cheap tablets usually have LCD (but they can still get some burn in and will lose brightness with constant use).
Actually since the alexa app does not have the issue, you could potentially just use that on an android tablet. Then you can have routines (I think) and maybe that will activate/deactivate the screen as needed? Sort of “make your own” Echo Show in that case.
Firestick linked to an Echo Dot for voice commands on a cheap 13" screen.
I think that would require tiny cam - the alexa in the fire stick is not the same as the app on a tablet or phone, basically just there for voice commands.
Unless the wyze app or skill is now available for fire stick? I checked a couple years ago and tiny cam was there but no wyze native app.
Either way it would still leave the screen on all the time. Maybe some want that but seems to make more sense to only have it come on when a routine kicks off or you ask it to show the cam. I think a $50 tablet with the alexa app might be the best solution.
Yes, it works on Firesticks.
I have on four tv’s here.
Simply hold Alexa talk on remote and ask to view camera.
I also own an Amazon tablet…Wyze skill stopped working on it last year.
Something going on with these 2 companies…
I guess if I installed the alexa app on my phone and set up the cams in it, it would probably work on the fire stick, never really had a need to do or try that but good to know. I do recall seeing that tiny cam would work directly on the fire stick at some point too but never tried that either.
I have a plasma TV that consumes about 100 watts and isn’t good to leave the same thing up on the screen for long periods. Not sure about amazon tablets but the Wyze app should work fine on android tabs (other people in this thread are saying the alexa app works fine with them too). Probably going to work more like an echo show with being able to turn the screen on and off etc.
Thanks.
On my current Echo Shows, it’s fairly convenient as II have a routine every hour to refresh the Wyze camera feed.. That way, if there’s an error or timeout, I may not even notice it. I’ve had bad luck with the regular browser feed too. It’s not at stable as the app is.
I have a couple of these portable 1080P monitors laying around. Someone recommended a Firestick connected to one of those. I think Firesticks come with a remote that would respond to voice commands. I think I have an old 4K Firestick from a few years back when I was doing some research on it if I didn’t toss it out. I think I might dig around for it and see if I can connect it to one of those portable monitors.
I thought you could use voice on the remote instead of requiring another Echo device
Yes, thru remote or link to a dot for hands-free convenience.
The root cause has been found, and this should be resolved shortly. Please let me know if it continues to be an issue after a few hours.
Oh wow, potential resolution within “hours” of an advance announcement that the root cause was found. I like this kind of action plan.
I am unsure what the cause was, I was just told the changes had been made and it should be resolved in around an hour (from when I was told).
Seems to be working now. Fingers crossed. Thanks
Ist blush–seems fixed👍
